  1. Iggy is perfectly situated in Detroit--with a hitting team and a non-caustic Detroit media. He needs about 3 years to develop into a .250 hitter--like so many of those good field/no-hit SSs. Some of them, like Ozzie and Aparicio, get to the HOF. Others make all-star teams just on their defense, which some teams value highly.
  2. I hear Bogaerts is going to get called up very soon. I would hope Bradley, too. I doubt Bogaerts will play 3B. He probably will platoon with Drew at SS. By now, they probably see that as the obvious thing to do. He's their SS next year. Middlebrooks is playing well enough right now. My lineup next year would be Bradley-Ells-Vic in the OF; In the IF, MBrooks, Bogaerts, Pedey and that big Cuban kid Abreu at 1B (more likely Carp/Nap). Salty or somebody better at C.
  3. They have to kick ass tomorrow, too. But which Dempster will show up?
  4. Important win stopping 3 game losing streak. Now they have to beat CC, a lefty which they haven't done lately. They have usually hit CC at Fenway when he was better. I understand Bogaerts is going to get called up as soon as Ben apologizes to Drew for the platoon. Hope Bradley gets the call, too. Nava-Gomes aren't much in LF and they have nobody to sub for Vic. Gomes seems to come up with big hits, but his stats aren't much. Not much of a lineup after the top 4.
  5. Yeah, it's a weird situation. The Yankees seem to be having their cake and eating it, too. If that's the expression. They certainly don't mind him being in the lineup to the end of the season, but want the rest of his contract voided so they can rebuild by buying more players. Some people think that's what's behind all this vilification of ARod in the media--mostly NY--based in CBS. And Selig's 211 game ban--which I doubt will be upheld unless they show evidence that he is different from the others. This latest stuff out of CBS--that he squealed on other players--would argue for a lessening of the ban. Complicity with MLB's investigation. Though the motivation might be to split him from the players and the PA supporting him. That makes sense. The bottom line is powerful forces--the Commissioner, the NY media, and the Yankees-- all seem to want him out of Baseball.
  6. I wouldn't count anybody out in the AL East right now. Toronto maybe excepted. The Red Sox won't make the playoffs the way they are playing right now, so they will have to snap out of it and find a way to hit LHP. So far, no answers. The braintrust has made no effort to improve their RHd hitting, except maybe Middlebrooks, who hasn't so far. Cashman, on the other hand, is coming up roses with Soriano and Reynolds--so far.
  7. next 2 games, Kuroda vs Lackey, Sabathia vs Dempster. Yankee sweep very possible.
  8. Pretty ridiculous at this point Bogaerts isn't playing SS against LHP.
  9. I would say the odds of them making the playoffs are 50/50. They have holes against LHP that have been ignored up to this point. Grandpa Pettite shut them down tonite. About every LH starter has been effective against them lately. They will see a steady diet of LHP the rest of the season. If they don't hit them, they will miss the playoffs.
  10. The Yankees are smart. They got two RHd power hitters that were available before coming into Fenway. Soriano is doing what the other castoffs have done for them this year--gotten hot initially. Reynolds hits the Red Sox. In the meantime, the Red Sox FO has done nothing to improve their RHd hitting against LHP. Middlebrooks is hitting like Iggy power-wise.
  11. They aren't hitting lefties. And nobody is doing anything about it. Drew is hitting .192 against lefties. Time for the FO to earn their pay before this club misses the playoffs.
  12. SS is a defensive position. If you need a hitter at SS, it means you are lacking in hitting at the corner positions--which generally are hitters' positions. The priority for most teams at SS is defense. Hitting is gravy, and there aren't that many who can hit without sacrificing defense. The Tigers have it right--hitters at the corners, defense up the middle.
  13. They are losing games lately on little things--not having speed at 2B last night to score the tying run. Key defensive errors by guys playing the corners out of position. They seem to be focused only on hitting and pitching. Not on fundamentals across the board. In '04, they don't get to the world series without a rabbit, Roberts, pinch running off the bench. Right now, Bradley could help a lot in that capacity as well as defense in LF. Nava and Gomes give you some hitting, and little else. In these close games, speed in the lineup can make the difference.
  14. The lineup needs a boost right now. They are fighting the dog days of August. Bradley and Bogaerts should be called up now to see if they can help this team win a championship.
  15. Peavy's shutout days are over. Team just ain't hitting right now. Dog days August. Yankees get Soriano and Reynolds. Red Sox stand pat. They need a boost.
  16. Just when it looks like Nap needs a rest, he hits a dinger to tie the game tonite. He probably still needs a rest. The dog days of August are tough on 30+yo guys. Pedey could use a day off, too. Have these guys fresh for September. Can't help but recall '78, when Zimmer burned the team out by not resting his starters.
  17. a pity they didn't have a rabbit at 2b to pinch run for Salty.
  18. cynicism will get you nowhere.
  19. Nap needs some time off. Maybe he needs glasses.
  20. Another game pulled out of their asses, despite some manager errors. Uehara has 55 appearances with 42 games left. He will need help closing before his arm falls off.
  21. They should go after that Cuban kid, Abreu.
  22. How the hell this team is still in first place I'll never know. I guess TB has lost a bunch of games lately.
  23. Ha. All he needs to do is stick with a starter for another inning. 88 pitches? That's simple enough. Maybe even a CG. Heaven forbid.
  24. Arencibia was about 1 for his last 30, hitting around .200, and had been benched. Tazawa has a sign on him that says too many appearances.
