  1. Kinder was great--especially with a hangover. Radatz was unhittable. Koji right now is hot. Perfect command. An inspiration for setup guys looking to close. This team is playing so well right now, you wish they would get fast frozen and thawed for the playoffs. If Buchholz is back, they'll be the favorites.
  2. I think it's important Farrell continues to platoon these guys--playing on their depth. Bradley adds to their depth in the OF, so Ellsbury will not be missed as badly. Where is Carp? Must be hurt. Nap is hot in September, but needs a breather against a tough righty. Buchholz could have a big impact approaching the playoffs. I see Lackey has to give up 7 runs to get a win. Go figure. I wouldn't give up on starting Doubront yet, but I think Dempster's experience closing should be utilized to help out Koji and Tazawa.
  3. It's ironic they converted Bard to a starter--and wrecked his career--just to save maybe $8-10 million it would have cost to sign another starter like Jackson. Then the next year, they thought nothing of giving 2/$26 million to a 36 yo declining pitcher like Dempster--if only because they had money to spend. It will be a challenge to get their money's worth out of Dempster. My guess it just might be in the back end of the bullpen--setup or closer in a pinch--where he has considerable experience. Tazawa is pretty well cooked right now, and they could use him in the setup slot.
  4. Cherington is lookin' good right now. All the FAs are shining except Dempster. Uehara was signed as a setup guy and converted, after Bailey and Hanrahan went down, to baseball's best closer right now. Makes you wonder what kind of a closer another setup guy named Bard would have been. A good part of their success has to be the coaching. It's just a reminder of how bad things were last year--right up the line.
  5. Bradley starting in CF tonite--just in time for Yankee stadium. His last at bat in Boston, he hit one over the Red Sox bullpen against a LHd pitcher. Hope he has the same success in NY. You have to give credit to Cherington and the FO for all those FA signings--all have worked out except Dempster. Vic and Drew have stepped up their game lately when it counted. Gomes and Napoli have had big hits. And they finally got a rabbit who immediately contributed on the bases. Peavy and Lackey are competitors who can pitch big games. Uehara is unreal. You never know how well a setup guy can close--until you try. Right, Bard? It's hard to get chemistry--the on the field type which wins games. You never know it until you have it. And they have it. Plus they have some solid prospects in the minors. The coaching has been superb. This team can go all the way.
  6. Lester, Lackey, Peavy, and hopefully Buchholz.
  7. And they have a good chance to beat the Tigers for the AL pennant if Buchholz comes back. Verlander is not 100% and their bullpen is weak.
  8. The guy is a strike machine. They do need somebody to back him up. Dempster makes sense. He can probably throw hard for an inning or so. Has closed with the Cubs. Tazawa needs a DL rest.
  9. Watching Nap look helpless on Nava's curve with the bases loaded in the 3rd, I was wondering why Carp wasn't in there against a RHd starter in Yankee stadium. The way to beat the Yankees there against a RHder is to load the lineup up with left handed batters. But Nap I see got a hit his next time up...
  10. Sure... but they are reluctant to move guys between starter and reliever. In my view, a weakness. Dempster could make a good reliever if given the chance.
  11. Dempster is a guy you would like to see on the DL with a pinched nerve in his neck. They have a number of younger guys who are better right now.
  12. Dempster's WHIP is almost 1.5. That's a sign he's getting hit and walking guys. He's a liability at a time when every win is important. He was Cubs closer for several years, but that was a while ago, and he doesn't have the same heat anymore. Maybe his experience will carry in the BP, but that's where he belongs in September and the playoffs.
  13. Ben was just doing what he was told to do--hold the line on spending so they wouldn't go over the cap. He went the cheapest route--converting Bard to a starter and trading for a cheap closer. That way, he didn't have to spend big bucks for a FA starter. It was pretty obvious at the time. I still can't understand why they spent that $26 mil on Dempster this year. You never want to sign an aging pitcher who was passed up by Nolan Ryan after a mediocre run in Texas. I thought it was a mistake at the time, and I was right.
  14. You would think they would find a better option than the Dumpster as 5th starter at this point. It would be a waste not to beat a pitcher like Porcello. Seems they prefer to pitch the money than to find somebody better who can win.
  15. Bradley's AAA numbers are similar to Bogaerts. I suspect they don't see a need for another outfielder, but when Vic goes down, they take a hit in speed and OF defense. That could haunt them down the line. Vic isn't durable.
  16. They may rank 2nd in BA, but the hitting has a lot of holes below Ortiz. Fortunately, they've gotten some key hits from the low part of the order, and Drew has been hitting over .300 since the all-star break. Speed is also lacking in the lower part of the order, with Iggy gone. Bradley could really help in speed and defense, but he is mysteriously missing. His AAA numbers are similar to Bogaerts. The OF has holes when Vic gets hurt. I wouldn't want Nava, Carp and Gomes at the corners on a daily basis.
  17. The playoffs is about your top 3 starters and top 3 bullpen guys. You have a reliable top 3 and you go deep into the playoffs. They should give Tazawa a week off. Get him back to earlier form. If Buchholz comes back sharp, they have him, Peavy, Lackey and Lester. Pretty good starting 4.
  18. The middle of the order starts with the no.5 hitter.
  19. They do show signs of needing more hitting. But you look up and they are 2nd in the league in hitting. That has kept the FO from signing any hitters recently, while other contenders are scrambling for waiver pickups. What is keeping them at the top is pitching. They have passed TB and NY the last couple of weeks and are now around 5th in AL pitching. And they'll get a boost when Buchholz comes back. They'll be tough if the pitching holds up, no matter how many runs they score.
  20. Nava hits for average and gets on base. But he's limited in everything else. Not enough power for a middle of the lineup guy. Bradley is still sitting in AAA. Potential 5 tool kid. They say he's not ready, but last time up I saw him he hit one over the bullpen against a LHP. With Vic and Carp being down at different times recently, they sure could have used him. He and Bogaerts have similar numbers in Pawtucket.
  21. Should have been a flag converting him back to starter. They ignored it. The logical move for him was to closer. Cherington's biggest mistake. The other was getting fleeced by Beane on the Bailey trade. The FO was just trying to save money by not signing a FA starter. They ignored Bailey's injury history. It was a disaster.
  22. Middle of the batting order is weak. There are too many outs. Low OBP guys. K guys. And Nava doesn't hit with power.
  23. I was thinking maybe they should have a stat called "quality save". There are saves, and then there are saves where the closer saves a 1 run game. That's a quality save--a real one. Not these phony 2 and 3 run saves, or where the manager waits until the tying run is on base before he brings in the closer. Or the save when a guy comes in with a 10-1 lead, and gets a save because he pitches 3 innings. The save stat smacks of PR. It's for agents and fantasy players. Koji, for example, has been getting a ton of 1 run saves lately where every game has become crucial. But it doesn't show up in the save stat.
  24. I just said he deserved consideration. If I had a vote, it would be for Scherzer right now, though he stunk today in Detroit. Oakland stacked the lineup with LHd hitters, and he was throwing fastballs right down the middle while the announcers were saying his out pitch against LHders was the curve.
  25. Not at all? He certainly deserves consideration, considering his great stats (ERA, Whip, K/W etc) and his importance to the team down the stretch in key save opportunities. It's an interesting situation, where the number of saves is almost irrelevant, just as in some cases the no. wins has become less important for starters. Somebody got a save last night, for example, pitching 3 relief innings with a 10-1 lead.
