  1. Those oil folks down in Texas are liable to match anything the Yankees offer for Lee. The good sign is all the media types have the guy in pinstripes. They are usually wrong. Not a peep about what if Lee decides to stay close to home? He'll still get more money than his family will ever spend. Why go to the media cauldron in NY? I don't think the Sox will pay 2/20 for Ordonez. No way. They are better off bidding for Crawford or Lee. A bigger priority than a rhd bat is the bullpen. They have Cameron and McDonald.
  2. Well, I hope Theo sees this as well. Who knows. He grabbed Lackey out of nowhere last year. He values pitching. Maybe that 7 year mystery team for Lee is local. They know by now who wants Dice-K and what they can get for him.
  3. That rag-tag outfield the Sox had last year kept them in contention until Pedroia went down. Maybe they should learn something from that, and not try to fix what isn't broke. McDonald hits lefties well. Nava has a nice swing. Kalish could break out early. Give these guys a shot, save your bucks for LEE. Lee is the one guy who could kill the Yankees next year--like he did last year. If the Yankees get him, they'll win the division. If the Red Sox get him, even Heyman will concede the Division to them. If he goes to Texas or LA, that's good, too. Lee is the make or break guy in the AL East.
  4. ESPN Boston is now saying what I suspected--The Yankees may attempt a sweep of Crawford and Lee. The Red Sox should try to prevent NY from buying a championship again. The Sox are within budget to do so. The Yankees clearly have no budget. How can they best beat the Yankees? Sign Lee, of course. Or see to it Lee goes somewhere else.
  5. The Red Sox should be in any mix involving the Yankees that makes any sense for them, if only to keep the Yankees from having the whole pie--which they are wont to do. I don't know if the Angels are enough of a buffer. They should be in the mix with Lee, too. Adding Lee would free them up to trade Dice-K, and would have a bigger impact than adding Crawford or anybody else. It would practically guarantee them dominance over the Yankees, who are vulnerable to LHd pitching. Hello Theo. 7 years.
  6. I think the Sox are in on both Martin and Crawford--age under 30 probably being a factor. Watching Jeter on MLB.com, Steinbrenner's abrasive comments did not go well with him. Can't blame him for what he's done in NY. You can see how Hank's father rubbed a few people the wrong way. Tito just came on again with Millar. Tito would look good in a Santa Claus outfit. You can see why the players like him. Just one of the guys.
  7. I doubt anybody will give Crawford 8 years. Speed is one of his strengths, and that does not hold up with age.
  8. Could be the Nationals offering Lee 7 years. The Yankees are playing a waiting game to top all offers. The Red Sox could make a serious run at Crawford, who brings a lot more than HRs to the table. May depend on how competitive the bidding is. They are saving a ton on AdGon's 2011 contract. They could make those RF bullpens even bigger.
  9. Latest buzz is Red Sox are interested in Crawford to play LF. Beltran no. Two teams offering Lee 7 years? One of them has to be the Yankees.
  10. Rosenthal on right now. Says 6 or 7 years not a big deal for Lee. Especially NY. I think NY will go 10 years to get Lee. Says he's been told there is a 7 year offer for Lee. I think NY holding back, waiting to top everybody at the right time, + 1 year. Says lots of RP activity from many teams. Sox may have to overpay to get a decent one. Should have tendered Oki? Looked good in Aug-Sept after poor start. Gammons on. Mets will deal Beltran. Need to move $10 mil. Sox interested. Will take some of the money. maybe January. Think he said Beltre said no to Sox. Didn't catch it all. No market except for Angels right now.
  11. $10-12 is plausible for Beltran. Tough to figure Lee. They are going to spend on the bullpen, particularly LHP. Tito just said that on MLB.com. Gammons on now. Says Lee probably won't get done in Orlando. He sees 6 years. Yankees, like the rest of the media. That means he stays in Texas, since the media is almost always wrong. What's one year? Texas should match NY if they want to stay playoff quality. My guess is they match 6 years, but the Yankees offer 7, or 8... whatever it takes. They're dead without Lee, if Pettite retires. Andy is fading anyways, even in Yankee stadium.
  12. I think Beltran is the guy they should get. He's a switch hitter and fits perfectly as a part-time left fielder and DH. He could be full-time DH after next year. Makes $18 mil this year the Mets would love to unload. I could see the Mets picking up half that in a trade. Francona up next on MLB.com He's not gonna say anything-even with Millar there egging him. Tito is wearing a gray T-shirt. Millar is dressed like a defense lawyer. Millar says AdGon almost like Manny R. in his prime. Tito says bullpen needs to get deeper. Looking at lefties right now. Also says he should stay out of the way and let the good players do their thing.
  13. The Red Sox could raise the drama level a ton by getting into the Lee sweeps. Beltre, too. The least they'll do is drive up the price.
  14. The Yankees will do whatever it takes. Hell, they're paying ARod 'till he's 45. Lee can do one thing: he can go into Yankee Stadium and beat the Yankees without raising a sweat. He's worth it just for that. Texas should do what it takes.
  15. I'm also hearing Beltran--Gammons says they are talking to the Mets. Cameron wouldn fit in a salary swap. I also heard they are thinking about Beltre, maybe playing him or Youks in LF. Youks can play 3B , but how well at this point is questionable. Beltre wanted to stay in Boston, so there's an incentive. And a guarantee of a solid 3rd baseman. Then there's Ordonez, if he doesn't stay in Detroit.
  16. Looks like Ordonez is a prime target, according to TradeRumors tonite. But Detroit also wants to keep him.
  17. Wait and see. Can't define his role yet. Injured too much. Fits as backup SS, 3B right now.
  18. The money being bandied about in the media for Crawford ($180 mil) looks excessive. He'll probably get somewhere between Werth and AdGon money--closer to Werth. Werth and Crawford will probably be more overpaid than AdGon, in terms of value. The Werth contract is out of whack, and will make the Crawford deal out of whack. The Sox are lucky they aren't players.
  19. Fortunately AdGon was not on the Yankee radar. That kept the price down. Plus no Boras factor. With Crawford, the Yankee factor is in play.
  20. What they really need is a platoon guy to play against LHP. Maybe a Willingham or Ordonez. No need to trade for a prime time guy like Kemp. I do think they will unload Pap if they get a good deal. Pap was a run of the mill closer last year who is looking for Rivera bucks down the road. They put Papi batting 5th in the lineup on MLB.com right now. But clearly they need a RHd bat against LHP instead of Papi. Hopefully Papi will be able to have another good year against RHP. That's enough.
  21. Watching hot stove on MLB.com from Orlando meetings. Very entertaining but not much that's tweetable. Heyman on right now: Greinke talk with Jays and Rangers. Crawford: Angels favorite, Lee : Yankees (predictable for Heyman). Damon: Rays or Sox (don't think so). Mostly interviews with GMs and managers. Kevin Millar and Mitch Williams are havin' fun as commentators. Millar says Sox are now best team in baseball. Yeah, but the Yankees haven't spent a dime yet. They have to satisfy their FA addiction. Shh. Steinbrenner didn't make the HOF. Congrats to Gillick.
  22. It's interesting that, with all the good young players the Sox have developed in their farm system and through the draft recently, there have been no power-hitting outfielders. They have had to go the trade or FA route to get one. Looks like they will again.
  23. I think most were reacting to an erroneous report by Heyman, who said the deal was dead. That was his own opinion based on his source in the MLB office--that no deal or extension had been reported by 2 pm. He jumped to conclusions. Rosenthal, with the same sources, retorted that the deal was not dead yet. What ultimately transpired is a scenario predicted by Speier of WEEI, where the extension would wait until April 5th for luxury tax reasons. Hoyers' press conference right now: Says he knew the players offered well, the Red Sox were the most aggressive team and had the best pkg of players they could control for awhile. Says he traded AdGon now, because he could get the best price now, and they were going to lose him to free agency. Says AdGon will be a monster hitter in Fenway with his LF power.
