  1. They're trying to unload Blanton right now, the guy they signed when they didn't extend Lee.
  2. A couple of NY reporters (Sherman, Heyman) are saying Philly. Maybe he prefers the NL; maybe it's Santana all over again.
  3. Epstein likes this guy. You know he will get every opportunity to succeed. He's still young and has upside if he can stay healthy.
  4. The Yankee thing is speculation. Heard it on MLB.com. It's possible the Red Sox are backing off, since their priority is defense at catching, not hitting--at this point. Martin is iffy as a catcher, coming off a hip injury. Besides he probably wants too much money--in the $5-6 mil range, maybe why the Dodgers non-tendered him. The Yankees' Montero looks very good and deserves a shot. He's a big kid like Salty, and a better hitter at this point--though RHd, which the Yankees don't like. Martin is a switch hitter, and could benefit hitting LHd in NY. They probably like that. But you don't know what you're getting with Martin as a catcher.
  5. Don't think so. Not with $100 mil in the bank, and your 36 yo arm falling off.
  6. Re McDonald, a lot of people would like to see him back as a backup OF and platoon player. He has a high OPS against lefties and plays good OF, Excellent bench player who gave Tito a few key hits last year. Tito doesn't forget.
  7. What I'm seeing off the twitter boards (Heyman et al) is Lee is going to Philly. He just might prefer the NL, having been there in Philly. Easier on pitchers with no DH. The money has reached a point where it probably isn't a major factor. I think the years are overrated, too. At $20 mil a year, who wants to work for 7 years? The other factor could be Halliday. He just may want to pitch alongside Halliday, and was willing to accept an extension there. Now why didn't they do it? Those 10 owners they have didn't want to pay.Maybe losing Werth loosened them up. The other thing I'm hearing (from MLB.com) is the Yankees may get Martin. Could be the Sox aren't willing to commit as much PT as Salty. Seems like Martin is a bit risky for the money he will get. They like his bat, but hitting is no longer important in the Boston lineup. Having a good defensive catcher is the priority. The Yankees are in a lot of trouble if they don't get Lee. All those graybeards they have hooked long term are bound to start slipping soon.Maybe Jeter has started.
  8. yeah. and it might snow in two weeks. what's the point?
  9. my impression is that traderumors is not very Red Sox friendly.
  10. Tito is pretty good at shuffling lineups. This year, he has to platoon Papi. Whether Crawford hits leadoff or not will depend on where they think they need him, and where he agrees to hit. He will have an input, I'm sure. He has power and run-producing ability, and could bat 3rd. My guess is Ellsbury 9th, Crawford 1st, Pedroia 2nd. Your best hitter bats 3rd, your big RBI guy bats 4th. Ted Williams batted 3rd his whole career. Youks and AdGon can bat 3rd or 4th.
  11. Is Tito the luckiest manager in Baseball, or what? Imagine having to put a lineup of those guys together? He likes L-R-L-R..., so Pedroia will bat 2nd. Now Ellsbury or Crawford can lead off, but I understand Crawford doesn't like to lead off. But Ellsbury is coming off an injury year, so maybe he bats 9th, initially. Ideally, I'd like to see the two speedsters at the top of the lineup. Ellsbury-Crawford 1-2 or 1-3. AdGon 3 or 4, then Youks, or Youks-AdGon, then Papi against RHP. Papi on the bench vs LHP. 1) Ellsbury--Pedroia--Crawford--Youks-AdGon--Papi 2)Crawford--Pedroia-AdGon-Youks-Papi. Ellsbury 9th. 2) is the one you'll see initially, unless Crawford balks at leading off. Crawford had 19 HRs and 90 RBIs last year, a good argument for him to hit lower. I've read you want Ellsbury and Crawford both at the top of the lineup, to maximize their at bats. Makes sense. Both these guys can steal 60 bases. That means the Red Sox have to RUN next year.
  12. There is a blog in MLB TradeRumors.com that AdGon is denying he agreed to any extension with the Red Sox. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ Some people out there might interpret that negatively, but AdGon fortunately did the right thing. Even a verbal agreement might be interpreted as an agreement prior to the April 5th luxury tax deadline.
  13. They are running out of RHd bats. Beginning to look like the Yankees. LOL.
  14. Can always surtax 'em. But the govt is too chicken to do it.
  15. I think Crawford's signing, along with AdGon, will help them to sign some of the secondary free agents. They will want to play in Boston.
  16. Looks like the Red Sox faked up the middle with Lee, then went around left end with Crawford. Caught the Yankees off guard. That's what generals are taught to do in war games.
  17. All those media outlets that assume the Yankees are the free agency team are pretty stunned right now. NY could well be shut out this year. I think the Sox were not confident of the Angels keeping Crawford from NY, so they decided to take the initiative to guarantee it. I don't think that will happen with Lee, but it gives other teams more leverage to compete for Lee, including the Angels. The story is now the Red Sox were the mystery 7 year team for Lee. This is a classic case of driving the price up for the competition. The options for Lee are at such a level now that other factors will determine where Lee will go--whether he wants to stay close to home, or which team he can win with (the Yankees don't look as good now, with the Red Sox looking like a powerhouse). Heyman is on MLB.com right now still spinning Lee to the Yankees. No surprise there.
  18. Wow was my first reaction this morning when I saw it on Yahoo. What you call an aggressive move. Age seems to be a key factor: They are signing two guys under 30 to long term contracts. They avoid the over 30 free agents long term. That's what may get the Yankees in trouble the next few years, though they can buy their way out of any problem. Crawford is one of the best all-around players in the game. Forget about what he's worth. The money numbers in baseball make no sense. $15 mil, 18 mil, 20 mil... what's the difference. It's tax deductible, and taxes will continue to be low for billionaires. Henry needs a tax writeoff, and that's what the Red Sox are. Now, about those bullpens in RF. Make them bigger.
  19. The ticker on MLB.com says the Yankees make a PRELIMINARY offer to Lee. Both Mitch Williams and Harold Reynolds just predicted Texas for Lee. Must be something there. I thought his agent returning to Arkansas might be a tipoff. Nolan Ryan probably has a few oilmen to help pay the bills down there.
  20. You can't be too rational here. 7/136 is insane, too. FA salaries are out of control. You look at the value of keeping Lee out of NY.
  21. So they are going to pay Ordonez and Ortiz $22 mil to DH next year? I don't get it. They have Cameron to play LF. What do they need Ordonez for, except to DH? As for Kalish, the kid should stick. He hit .250 his first year in Boston. Crawford hit .259 his rookie year. I can't believe they want to hide him in AAA and play the likes of two 38 yos Ordonez and Cameron. The kid should play against RHp. They should stick to upgrading the bullpen.
  22. That would make sense if they signed Lee.
  23. The best deal for the Sox is if Crawford goes to LA and Lee stays in Texas. Then they can just spend some money on the bullpen and another catcher. My hunch is Crawford will avoid the AL East, and Lee will stay in Texas. His agent leaving the meetings and going back to Arkansas may not be a good sign for NY.
