  1. I'm for the kid. I just don't like all the pressure on him. They should break him in more slowly. That means getting a real backup--Tek is a relic. With that lineup, you worry about defense behind the plate, and handling the pitchers. Forget about offense.
  2. I hope the other 18000 posts weren't as unsubstantive as this one.
  3. Up to this point, I would say Kalish couldn't be any worse than Crawford--for sure.
  4. The problem with Crawford is chemistry. Too much speed on a team that doesn't utilize speed. Francona is a big inning guy. Power guy. Werth would have been better. More balanced lineup. Epstein is thinking speed and defense, but they haven't made that adjustment. And they are hurting defensively at catcher. You have to wonder about Theo. Last year it was Ellsbury to LF. This year it's Salty or bust.
  5. Kalish should be playing THIS year, not next year. And they would be $20 mil richer. James OPS projections for this year: Kalish--.791, Crawford--.803.
  6. Tito is just grasping for straws, doing what he should have done in spring training instead of playing all those minor leaguers. Fortunately, he is pretty good at massaging lineups. But batting Crawford and Ellsbury 7th and 9th is disturbing--and embarrassing. Crawford needs a shrink. The front office can't be too happy about him.
  7. Tainted is not the right word. Tainted title implies tainted Red Sox. The Yankees, by the way, bought their first championships in the early 1920s. Courtesy of the Red Sox. You could look it up.
  8. Mike Torres comes to mind. That hanging slider that Dent hit over the wall will live in infamy. As will Buckner's inexcusable '86 World Series blooper. That 86 World Series was not won by the Mets. It was lost by the Red Sox--with poor management and poor execution. There should have been a few executions after that one. The manager did lose his job. Two infamous front office types come to mind. The first was the owner Harry Frazee, who sold the Babe and a few others off the Red Sox championship team to a losing Yankee team in 1920. I still think it was a deliberate effort to establish a winner for the AL in NY where the NL was dominating. Just a few switches of uniform did the trick. The other was Haywood Sullivan, Red Sox GM in the late 70s during the advent of free agency. Sullivan sneered at free agency while Steinbrenner was buying up every FA in sight. Sullivan even let Fisk and Lynn go on a technicality (deliberately missing a deadline), without getting anything in return. A team wrecker.
  9. You want optimism? Beckett is Beckett again. 3 straight good starts. The Angels still can't beat them. The Henderson curse, maybe. Drew shows he's a pro. He can hit and play RF. Overpriced, but good. Lowrie is a nugget. Stay healthy, kid. Scutaro is history. Youks power is back. Pap is eating his Wheaties again. Contract year. Papi can still hit RHders well, but he needs to sit against LHders. Ellsbury is close to leading the team in RBIs--a sign it's still early.
  10. Last time I looked, Crawford was still batting 7th. Let's talk again when he has hit his way back to the top of the order. His "deer in a headlights" start gives cause for concern about his mental toughness. Did anybody see Damon last night? my god, he looks better right now than any of the Red Sox outfielders. He has a bit of Pete Rose in him. 100% all the time.
  11. The Red Sox didn't "throw" the World Series, it was the Cubs, MAYBE, who did. It is the Cubs, MAYBE, who are tainted. Not the Red Sox. Some people like to mimic the media. ESPN has a NY bias (their main market), and never misses an opportunity to dig at the Red Sox. You could say every World Series the Yankees won in the 1920s was tainted. Because they won them with key players (more than just the Babe) bought from the Red Sox championship teams a few years before--to turn a losing American League NY team around. By just changing uniforms. You won't hear that on ESPN.
  12. The front office should be asking themselves why this team starts the season so sucky the past few years. It isn't just the pitching. The hitting sucks, too. It takes a kid like Lowrie to light them up. The team is too laid back. And they play lousy fundamentals.
  13. They just optioned Aceves, a guy who has pitched well, back to Pawtucket to make room for Albers. At some point, they will realize Wake has to go if they are to get that bullpen to some semblance of order.
  14. It's not the Red Sox who are "tainted"--it's the Cubs.
  15. Hey, that's great. Good luck to you over there. You have us all beat by a mile knowing baseball.
  16. Yeah, as long as Lackey doesn't have to pitch in the east. He's never had much success at fenway. I'm not optimistic about the chemistry on this club--the imbalance in LHd hitting and pitching. Plus the reluctance to platoon Ortiz. That mindset is disturbing. And then there's Crawford batting 7th, Ellsbury 9th. Those guys have to be at the top of the lineup for this team to succeed. I hope the optimists are right. A pity a lot of this stuff wasn't worked out in spring training. The Yankees never seem to have these problems. Not with Steinbrenner holding the whip.
  17. This club seems out of whack. Too many LHd hitters. Not enough LHd pitchers. These guys are going to see every left handed pitcher on the planet the next six months. Theo reminds me of Danny Ainge. Why do these GMs constantly mess with the chemistry?
  18. Actually, with Wake's guaranteed $3-4 million salary, he can pretty much BUY Don and Jerry, whatever that is.
  19. I'm still wondering why the heck they signed Crawford. Better to lower ticket prices with the savings.
