  1. Looks like those "unnamed sources" were clubhouse guys. It figures. Lots of equipment guys hangin' around Hohler could target. Do you think Luchino, Henry or Werner would know what happens in the clubhouse? Henry was pretty indignant about the Globe's efforts to blame the ownership on clubhouse antics. Francona should have known, but I guess he was too busy spitting out pumpkin seeds. The ownership undoubtedly blamed him. Epstein? He was guilty of a far lesser sin --of wasting $200+ million of Henry's hard earned dollars.
  2. Yaz could have been a lot better ballplayer if he stayed in condition. I remember after his triple crown season, he gained weight and hit .266 or something the next year. Became just a slugger swinging for the fences. He mended his ways some after that, and had some great defensive years in LF. And then the DH padded his stats a lot. Hell, Williams could have DHd when he was 50. Seriously. Yaz was a Mantle level talented ballplayer when he was young-- a better all-around player than Williams. Mantle tore up his knee, and wasn't the same after that. He liked his beer, too. Williams was the most dedicated--and disciplined. And it shows in his batting stats.
  3. Ricketts seems to value Epstein. The Cubs fans value Epstein. Epstein is a "star." He's under contract to the Red Sox. The Red Sox have all the cards. They should insist on a major leaguer for Epstein. The Cubs minor leaguers suck. I would hold out for Garza. In return, I would allow Epstein to take one or two people with him acceptable to both sides. Take it or leave it, Mr Ricketts. The Cubs posture is the Red Sox have to get rid of Epstein. Nonsense. He's under contract. So he sits out next year, and they pay him $2 million. Big deal. Nice bonus for screwing up the last two years, and wasting a lot of money.
  4. Manager's problem. If he can't solve it, he has to go upstairs. It's possible the whole organization was soft, which created the wrong climate for the players. Games are won and lost on the field. And it was clear these guys weren't playing as a team, even when they were winning. That was a comment I heard from one of those ex-player TV commentators, Rick Sutcliffe, during a game. I thought the same at the time.
  5. I'm surfing around and reading a few things... It wouldn't surprise me if Lucchino holds out for Garza and gets him. I think he has Ricketts over a barrel with his fan base, who regard Epstein as the next coming of Christ.
  6. It's about time this organization stopped giving its prospects "a little more time" before they promote them, and "a little more time" for its rehabbing pitchers--complete with trips to Florida and AAA assignments. Kalish, for example, missed a whole year injured in AAA, because he needed "a little more time". This is a lavish, free-spending organization that wastes money. In the old days, pitchers "rehabbed" in the bullpen, pitching an inning or two, before they made a start. And fielders played on the bench a few innings before they started again. It is part of the 'soft' culture of the Red Sox organization. They need to run leaner.
  7. I doubt the Red Sox clubhouse is any different from other teams. This is a team that went 80-40 through the middle of the year. The September collapse was not due to the "clubhouse." It was due to the manager and GM--and the coaching. The team was not ready for prime time September--just like it was not ready to start the season.
  8. That's right. It's off limits to the media. I doubt the Red Sox clubhouse is any different than the others. Funny thing, Francona is dodging a lot of the blame here in the media--and it's his fault. He let things get out of hand--that's why he was fired. Where did Hohler get his info? It's a good bet it came from one of Epstein's people--if Henry is telling the truth.
  9. The Globe is driving this beer thing ad nauseam--while most people are ho-humming it. Are they this desperate for controversy? It's a classic example of media overkill. I see the Cubs are holding out for just cash. The Red Sox should give the Cubs a deadline for getting a reasonable player. After that, they should take Epstein off the table. By By Cubs. Screw you Theo. Next year, you can be Lackey's ballboy for $2 million.
  10. The latest rumors center around McNutt, the big RHd thrower, as a likely possibility. Ranked no.2 in the Cubs farm system. He looks like a closer prospect--the Cubs have Marmol. The no.1 prospect, Jackson, looks like a Kalish clone--the Cubs need him more than the Sox. They may also want one more lower prospect besides McNutt.
  11. Make that the 100 pitch rule. Good or bad. 0 runs or 7 runs and out. That's why some people say he left starters in too long, others say too short. That explains it.
  12. This thread says "Beckett". It just occurred to me Beckett has been one of those on-year, off-year pitchers since he came to the Red Sox. I wonder if his conditioning--or lack of it off and on--has anything to do with it? He doesn't come out of this looking like a very disciplined guy. It takes dedication to be consistently great in sports.
  13. yeah--I just said the same in the "Lester" thread. They didn't respect Tito, who looks like a fool now. Maybe they didn't like some of his game moves, either. Tito will have a tougher time than people think getting another manager job .
  14. Hey, it's major f**king league baseball. These guys are making millions. Rich and famous. TV stars. And they didn't respect their manager, who looks like a fool in all this.
  15. This clubhouse business is way overblown by the media. A coupla guys having a beer or two and some fast food during a game they're not scheduled to pitch. I don't see the big deal. It's probably common. You can imagine what those post game "spreads" are like--especially the freebies for the media. A lot more than beer. The Globe is trying to turn this thing into a clubhouse scandal--which it isn't. The scandal is the Red Sox collapse in September. And the failure of the management to avoid it. That points to the two guys leaving--Tito and Theo. And the 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' coaching staff. Upper management got it right unloading both, but there is more housecleaning to do.
  16. The important thing is to get some leadership from the manager.
  17. They might save a little finding a deal for him. The important thing is to get him out of Boston. He is a liability. I still think tying him around Theo's neck and giving him to Chicago isn't a bad idea.
  18. bingo. Henry needs to stay away from the media and newsgoups. And hire a PR spokesperson.
  19. If Crawford is right, there sure is trouble in River City.
  20. sure. injuries happen easier with less conditioning. that's a known.
