  1. Phillips never saw an over 30 free agent he didn't want to overpay for. Plus he screwed around with the help at ESPN, which got him canned--by somebody 2 levels up.
  2. Yeah. Had a place there. Didn't like the single span Bridge Lee County pushed on the residents. I recall last October wondering if the Red Sox players were spending too much time on the beach there. We now know the answer. Can't blame them. Never much enjoyed the games there. Mostly minor leaguers. The Yankee games were loaded with Yankee fans who came over from Ft Lauderdale in busloads. The new park looks great. The Sox must have tons of dough--almost like the Yankees. Expect Valentine will play the regulars a lot more down there, so they can be in shape for April.
  3. This guy Valentine is phenomenal. Managing is maybe the least of his accomplishments. http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/wilbur/2011/11/let_us_now_prai.html
  4. Yeah, the Sox were no.1 in hitting last year, and middle of the pack in pitching. You could say, it's the pitching, stupid. The Yankees finished first because their pitching was better than expected. Period. It's always about pitching between the Red Sox and the Yankees. So I would say to Papi, learn how to pitch--or take a walk.
  5. Looking through the papers this morning, you wonder why the GM has to pick the manager ONLY in Boston? Epstein (not Hoyer) picked the manager in Chicago, and who knows (or cares) picked the manager in St Louis. And those other managers picked recently--can you name one who was picked by the GM? Probably not, because these hirings are usually done in private, as opposed to the public charade now ended in Boston. You get hired or fired two levels above you in most corporate organizations. That's how it works.
  6. I think now they have a manager the GM will get to work on the closer. Gammons said today they are inclined to make Bard a starter. That means they will go after a closer--somebody like Bell, Bailey, etc. I think they didn't view Broxton as a closer.Neither does KC. He will setup there.
  7. I think user name is right. He isn't a puppet. He's a GM who reports to LL. His authority and responsibilities should have been spelled out in advance by his boss. It appears he was given too much rope. The manager should be hired 2 levels above--which is LL. Epstein hired Sveum--not Hoyer. What wasn't done in advance before the search was to work out with Ben what they wanted in a manager. Maybe they didn't know. But they let Ben go his own way--and suffered the consequences. That's the way it appears, anyways. But all's well that ends well.
  8. Praise the Lord. The soul search has ended.
  9. Back on the thread title, here's an article by Edes, saying the manager issue is FO trust: http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/7292546/boston-red-sox-manager-choice-comes-trust Can Cherington "trust" Valentine? Substitute the word "control" for trust. It's really an issue of FO control. The Red Sox have a serious management conflict, folks. Edes says in this article that Epstein controlled Francona and the dugout. That's the first time I've seen anybody in the media say that. I concluded that in a post weeks ago after I read Moneyball book. Beane micro-managed games in Oakland, and Tito was the bench coach. You have to read books to get this stuff--the mainstream media doesn't talk about it--until now.
  10. Gammons said this morning on TV they are inclined to make Bard a starter. That means they go after a closer like Bell or somebody else.
  11. Valentine is returning from Japan on Wed, not Tues. Their timing is Thurs or Fri, consistent with Valentine being here. That tells me it's Valentine. I heard Gammons this morning on MLB cable. Says they are now inclined to making Bard a starter. If so, they better hurry up and get a closer. They missed out on Broxton today.
  12. Getting Garza as part of a compensation package for Epstein sounds like a good idea. Too bad the Red Sox are currently caught in a 'who's running this team' conflict right now--which seems to have put everything else on the back burner.
  13. This is an absurd situation created by Lucchino/Henry's mismanagement. The tail wagging the dog. Cherington may have to go if they want Valentine. And it's their fault--they gave this guy too much power. Ben wants a manager the FO can control.
  14. Gammons said tonite on MLB cable that Lucchino is on the spot--having told Cherington the manager's call was his. Is Lucchino that dumb? If they pick this prune Lamont over Valentine just to appease Cherington, there will be hell to raise in the media and the fandom. The management has really fumbled the ball in the manager search.
  15. Power struggle. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2011/11/28/looks_like_theres_a_power_struggle_on_yawkey_way/
  16. Theo Epstein. I understand he can pitch, too. They can also throw in a prospect. I wish Cherington would get back to his GM job, instead of trying to handpick the next manager. Cmon Ben. Get to work on Theo's compensation, trades and free agents. Like your buddy Hoyer in Chicago. You haven't done a thing yet.
  17. Not when I wrote my post.
  18. Well, you heard it first right here--it's all about power. Imagine Cherington in a power struggle with his boss, Lucchino, over who picks the manager. Ben thinks he's Theo. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2011/11/28/looks_like_theres_a_power_struggle_on_yawkey_way/
  19. We don't have a clue about the content of those interviews or how they went. Besides, a guy like Valentine probably has more ML experience than any of those guys interviewing him. He probably knows a lot more than they do. The key word about both Valentine and Lamont is ML managing experience. Valentine obviously has a better record--and more experience managing. He looks like the better candidate. Maybe not for the FO, but for the Red Sox. But then the FO could use some brakes, given the free agent signings the past couple of years.
  20. I think Cherington is smart enough to know his authority isn't the same as Epstein. Was it spelled out internally? I don't know. It should have been. The public perception is fuzzy because of the whole interview process. Lucchino/Henry showed the process was flawed by rejecting the finding (Sveum). That's their fault--they created the process.
  21. A healthy Youks is one of the top 10-15 hitters in the league. Their cleanup guy, and one of their two RHd power hitters--counting Pedey. So he isn't going anyewhere, unless the Tigers want to trade Verlander for him. Aviles is a utility player. He can play 2 or 3 infield positions. And can hit some. So he's valuable off the bench.
  22. I read that it was Epstein, not Hoyer, who introduced the Cubs new manager, Sveum, to the media. Didn't seem to be much of an issue there. Now with the Sox, we have the media questioning Lucchino going over Cherington's head. What's the difference vs the Cubs? None, except Lucchino handled the whole business poorly, not spelling out Cherington's responsibilities or his own. Things changed after Theo, and they should have said so. Larry's title, for one. It would be foolish to think Cherington has the power Epstein had when he left. But we had to find that out the hard way. A PR screwup.
  23. Don't think it is. Especially with a new GM. Hiring is usually two levels above you. The perception has been it was Cherington's call, but the final decision is clearly above him. The problem here is the manager search is way overexposed in the media--more than other teams. I'm surprised they didn't bring TV cameras in for the interviews.
