  1. Can't believe it. More like a salary dump. They saved $1.5 mil option money by signing him and $6mil on the trade. After they got Punto and Sweeney, they figured they could get by with Aviles and Punto at SS without much of a drop. And maybe Iglesias might be ready by midseason. Scutaro was a one-year rental.
  2. Don't think the Red Sox want Scutaro back--which is what Bartlett amounts to. Bobby V. said in an interview--pretty much--that the job belonged to Aviles, unless he meant Iglesias. He wants somebody full-time at the position. No platooning.
  3. Sure, but he can suggest it behind the scenes. It's possible he'll do it that way anyways, and the teams will announce they have come to an agreement, as follows....
  4. I still think there's a chance they get Garza--as some kind of package deal which includes Epstein plus players. LL has pushed for Garza from the outset, and a deal is still possible if Selig gets behind it. I don't like Oswalt or Jackson. They can probably do just as well with what they have, and a lot cheaper. They have enough overpaid pitchers.
  5. I think they pushed him out the door, and maybe the Cubs owner sees it that way, too, so he figures why should he have to pay anything. Now LL & Henry certainly don't want to make it look like they pushed him out the door, for a variety of reasons. The least of which is making Epstein look bad, plus they want to get some compensation for him. Executives these days always leave on their own volition--they never get any encouragement. Right?
  6. Boras may be looking for a one-year deal now for Jackson, but he isn't going to get $10 mil from Boston for him. He has Jackson way overpriced, and it's hard to see anybody paying that much at this point...
  7. I was surprised to see MLB TV lead a story tonite about Crawford's wrist injury--as if it were some breaking news. Cripes, it's been known for several weeks. Reddick had the same injury, and says he might miss a week or two. It ain't that serious--but those MLB guys are already hammering the nails in the coffin.
  8. I read yesterday the Red Sox had withdrawn their offer for Oswalt. Today I read Oswalt has told them he doesn't want to play in Boston (actually, in the AL East). Nice to see they are in complete agreement. As a pitcher in decline, he will have a tough time getting what he wants.
  9. Crawford does not bat lower than 2nd. One of the top 3 starters goes on the DL. Bard wins 15 games as a starter. Melancon becomes closer when Bailey goes on DL. Iglesias is the regular SS the 2nd half. Youks comes back and plays a decent 3B the 1st half. Middlebrooks called up after the all-star break. CC switches to RF. Cody becomes full-time LFder. The Red Sox make the playoffs as the 2nd wild card team. And beat the Angels, naturally, the first playoff series.
  10. Right. They keep coming back for the easy money until nobody wants them.
  11. Ha. Well, that would be a shocker--getting Garza for Epstein. If Selig wants to make a statement, that would certainly do it. The talk is Lucchino has been asking for Garza all along, but most people haven't taken it too seriously. I think Epstein needs an ego check--anyways. Maybe that's been his problem the last two years in Boston--with his reckless spending and disregard for team chemistry. As for Buchholz's mechanics, I defer to my pitching coach.
  12. Bard has the potential to be a top starter. That should be the priority. A top starter is more valuable than any bullpen guy. They can find out pretty quickly in Spring Training if Bard can be a good starter. They can always put him back in the BP. Traditionally, pitchers have gone from the minor leagues to the bullpen in the majors--and then to the starting rotation. Nowadays, there is a sharper distinction due to increased emphasis of closers and the bullpen--and reduced innings for starters. That pendulum may swing back, however, as starters get more expensive and teams reduce the value of closers. It's time teams valued their starters again in terms of $$/innings pitched as well as the other stats. That, by the way, increases Jackson's value as a FA, and reduces Oswalt's. I'm sure Boras has made that point for Jackson.
  13. He wants to be a starter for Texas or St Louis, but neither team has room for him. He could wind up back in Houston. The rumors say the Red Sox have withdrawn their offer, so they may not be an option. At his age, and with his health concerns, he can't be too picky. I think the Sox should just sit tight, and see if any of that mud they've signed sticks to the wall.
  14. One correction: Make that 'groin' strain. Everything else looks achievable.
  15. I get the impression the Red Sox tinker too much with their pitchers, sometimes with counter-productive results. I also think it's possible their strict pitch limit approach results in unnecessarily lower innings for their starters and more wear and tear on the bullpen.
  16. Cafardo says in his Globe column today an AL GM told him he thought the Sox would get a "significant" player from the Cubs, because Selig wants to discourage MLB executives switching teams before their contracts are up.
  17. yes. Duncan took a year off because of his wife's health. He also has to be near retirement age. I can't get excited about Oswalt or any of the other guys at this level of starter. They are just as well off with Bard and Aceves as starters, though I wonder about the BP and whether Bard might be needed there later on. Also, what happens if one of the top 3 starters goes down again.
  18. Scutaro is just an average defensive SS, and a year older at 36. Maybe below average at this point. Aviles hits at least as well on average. And Punto is there for late inning D. The Phillies would have re-signed Oswalt if he wasn't declining. I doubt he's a full season pitcher anymore. His value goes up with visibility as a FA, but the pickings are pretty thin right now. They'll have to get lucky with their pitching this year.
  19. I get the impression the Cardinal deal for Oswalt is stalling because he doesn't want to relieve. They have 5 good starters. He'll be a starter in Boston for sure.
