  1. I would bring the kid up and play him. And they don't have to punt on offense. They were no. 1 or 2 in offense last year. SS ain't gonna make or break their offense, but it might improve their pitching. Aviles' defense is probably average at SS. The kid Iglesias looks like an all-star defensively.
  2. nah. Tulo is a slow starter.
  3. Aviles played SS for KC in 08. Hit .325 that year. He's an above average hitter as SS. Maybe good for a year until Iglesias is ready.
  4. That leaves SS wide open. Iglesias or Hanley?
  5. That vote is so lopsided it's bound to be the wrong advice.
  6. That's a question that is crying out for the media to ask Bobby V. I think he'd be better in RF in Fenway, being lefthanded. I have a hunch V. knows that. There's bound to be a few surprises in ST. And this may be one of them. The other thing is he'll probably bat 1 or 2. This guy has gotta be jumpstarted. They're paying him a fortune. CC, by the way, should only miss a week or so of the season, from what Reddick said about his same injury.
  7. I saw him sit on first base in a crucial situation in the Baltimore series. What happened to the guy that used to steal about 4 bases a game against the Red Sox? Maybe his wrist was bothering him.
  8. He won't get $16.5. He might have gotten $14.5, but he'll probably have to settle for $12.5, which is more than what he could get anywhere else. That was their miscalculation. Plus their loyalty factor, which was not reciprocated. I get the impression Papi could care less where the Red Sox finish next year.
  9. Not so good for a couple of years before last year.
  10. You don't really need an elite closer to win. You just need a reliable one. Look at the Rays and the Cardinals last year. Bailey and Melancon should be OK. Both are young and may have some upside.
  11. When it comes to health, you can say that for all the other teams, too. The age on the Yankees must look pretty scary to some people. And who knows if Pujols is in decline.
  12. Makes sense, but Hart's salary doesn't fit with their current self-imposed limits. They are hurting for a decent RHd bat in the OF. They might make their search easier by moving CC to RF and getting a RHd bat with less defense to play LF. Crawford's speed will make up for his "weak" arm. Right now, they are trying to go cheap by platooning in RF. I would trade Kalish for a RHd power bat who can play LF. Some have suggested Werth for CC. That makes sense, too.
  13. I think the Red Sox have an excellent chance of winning this at $12+ mil. I don't see an arbitrator giving him $16+ mil he's asking for. Too big a jump for a DH his age with a recent history of decline prior to last year. Papi would have gotten $14 mil if he had asked for it.
  14. Papi has done a lot in Boston, but the Sox carried him for two years at inflated salary prior to last year when he was declining. Last year, he rejuvenated in a way that is all too common in baseball for contract year players. If he was a team player, he would accomodate the Red Sox in working out a deal that is friendly to the cap and allows them to add a pitcher they need without paying the luxury tax. But as an older HOF player told me, they're all a bunch of greedy bastards who are after the last dollar. Papi is a prima donna, and he is for Papi.
  15. Is that the Celtics owner?
  16. Yeah, Tecce's is closed due to bankrupcy. That was the 'in' Italian place years ago. How about Durgin park? It got a facelift years ago when Fanuel Hall was rebuilt, but I remember the old gaslight restaurant where Prime Rib was a couple of bucks and the Indian pudding was great, too. The grand daddy of the posh restaurants used to be Lochovers. Is that still around?
  17. Is this the bunch that wanted Buchholz to go down to Florida to pitch 2 innings before pitching in Boston last September? Talk about cost overruns.
  18. A lot of people would rather have VMart and Beltre right now than Crawford and AdGon. Plus all those prospects they gave up. I wonder if Mr Henry is one of them.
  19. The Crawford timing is incredible. It suggests a lack of communication in the organization. They've pissed away a lot of opportunities to get another outfielder during the free agent season because Henry has suddenly got stingy. And now they find they won't have a left fielder for a couple of months for an injury they were aware of and should have checked out. Now they're thin in outfielders as well as starting pitching. The fans deserve better than this, Mr Henry. How about it. Sell a few of those hedge funds.
  20. Or is that one less bum.
