  1. I think a lot of this stuff about Beckett has been overblown. No sense in making him the fall guy. I still think the main culprit was Tito--for not running the ship. That the Globe has chosen to go after the body instead of the head doesn't change that, in my view. I saw Beckett on the Millar show, and the impression I got was that clubhouse beer and chicken is not unusual in baseball. Millar said his teams did worse. I think Beckett was miffed somebody leaked the story--probably one of the clubhouse guys. Players don't like the media snooping around the clubhouse, and you can't blame them. I think these guys are all a bunch of spoiled prima donnas, but it's the system that made them that way. They are overpaid and overexposed in the media. Many of them are pea-brained, and don't know any better. That's why it's up to the management to keep a rein on them. After all, it's a kid's game, and some of these guys still think they're kids. Bless 'em.
  2. Another one of Epstein's blunders, Cameron, just retired. What did they give him, $16 mil over two years? I remember he arrived in ST camp hurt with an abdominal strain and never really got going in two seasons before they finally unloaded him. The curse of the guaranteed contract.
  3. Mystery is putting it kindly. The guy was a base stealing beast in TB against the Sox. The opposition stole 3 times as many bases against them as the Red Sox did last year. The saber runs from stolen bases was way lopsided in favor of the opposition. That's why Shoppach was brought in. Last year, Ells and Pedey were the only guys who stole more than 20 bases. This year, I expect V. will keep CC and Ells at the top of the lineup, and they will both steal more than 40 bases each. Stolen bases will be part of the offense again.
  4. It won't be easy for V. The team is used to a manager who let them do as they please, and never took spring training very seriously for the regulars. In a way, it's good the Globe is putting the heat on the players for the collapse. That helps V. We all know, however, it's the management that sets the tone. And Henry will look for some changes from V.
  5. Yeah. And the Yankees "only had enough money" to sign Kuroda for $10 mil.
  6. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2012/02/19/is_it_time_for_red_sox_to_consider_jose_iglesias/?page=5 Cafardo is pushing Iglesias at the Globe this morning. He thinks Iglesias has a real shot at starting SS. Bobby V. had Ordonez with the Mets, a good field/no hit type that Iglesias may turn out to be. Hiding him in that lineup with a DH should be no problem. I figure you have to expect some surprises with V., and this may be one of them. I've had a hunch about that. The kid is all-star ready defensively, and everybody is talking about his weak hitting--except the Red Sox pitchers. I remember seeing Iglesias circle the bases as a pinch runner last year to score a key run, and thinking this kid can fly. Yet he has no base stealing history in the minors. Has the Red Sox philosophy been to discourage base-stealing? That is sure to change. Those runs-from- stolen-bases saber stats took a big bite out of them last year.
  7. Tek should be bullpen coach. He's a valuable teaching aid for young catchers and pitchers. Maybe manager material, like so many other catchers. There is no such need I can think of for Wake.
  8. Exactly. An example of the misapplication of sabermetrics--maybe.
  9. Another thing about Wake: Did he look slimmer in his press conference, or what? He had a chubbier face last year, and a paunch around his waist. Looked trimmer in his suit.
  10. Somebody mentioned Burnett, who the Yankees just dumped on the Pirates, paying about 60% of his salary the next two years. The Pirates are getting a guy with good stuff who couldn't hack it consistently in NY--for $5 mil the 1st year and $8 mil the 2nd. The Yankees are eating $20 mil over 2 years. This looks to me like a good deal for the Pirates. Burnett is likely to be better in the NL, and worth what the Pirates, a smart-poor organization, will pay him. But how is this being spun in the media? The Yankees just found another $13 mil to spend. More like they just burned $20 mil. Wake mentioned there were four other teams after him. Wanna bet one was Pittsburgh? His original team.
  11. http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/massarotti/2012/02/by_tony_massarotti_globe_staff.html Mazz says the Red Sox starters lack endurance, and should improve their conditioning. I agree, but I also think the whole pitch count philosophy needs to be reexamined in terms of its effect on endurance. Limiting pitches/innings may be counterproductive--except for very young pitchers developing in the minors. Even there, you have to wonder if you are limiting endurance from the start. The other problem is the overtaxing of the bullpen which results when starters are prematurely removed after 5 or 6 innings due to pitch counts.
  12. check Booking.com they have the best deals in the area hotels around fenway.
  13. Wake put some weight on last year--it was noticeable. Maybe his conditioning dropped off, affecting his performance. That could have been a deciding factor in the Red Sox minds.
  14. You take all those retreads the Sox signed, you put 'em all in a blender, blend 'em up for one minute at the high setting, and out comes one Roy Oswalt. Presto.
  15. Wake has pitched more innings than any Red Sox pitcher in history. They kept giving him those one or two year contracts for small change. His lifetime era is 4.41. Classic 5th starter.
  16. Absolutely. It's almost impossible to manage a bunch of guys who are making 5-10 times more than you are. You have to have strong interpersonal skills. Plus a track record winning, so you have their respect. I expect V will have some problems. This isn't Japan, and it isn't the Mets of the 1980s. It's a lot of grossly overpaid prima donnas. Fortunately, with the salary inequities in baseball, you always have a bunch of young guys pushing for the big payday. The Ellsburys. etc. They balance the $20 million dollar guys. How a guy making $20 mil guaranteed gets motivated to bust his butt everyday is beyond me. Some do, some don't. That's what it takes to stay at a high level of performance.
  17. Eric Wilbur. Don't know who he is . Maybe Joe Sullivan has him do the hatchet work. This could help the Sox get a decent player from the Cubs--oddly enough. Makes Epstein look like he left on his own initiative. Henry gets rid of people in a passive way--makes it look like it's their decision they are leaving. Tito, also. And now even Wake.
  18. And may this be the last time a .500 pitcher gets his own caddy as a catcher--taking up a valuable roster spot and hindering the progress of young catchers.
  19. Wake did the right thing--finally. He had a long career, and did some good things. He just stayed a bit too long at the party, and the Red Sox didn't have the balls to let him go.
  20. "getting their manager fired" http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/wilbur/2012/02/red_sox_sweepin.html This guy doesn't get it. It was the manager's fault that the inmates were running the funnyfarm. Typical media response blaming the players, but letting the management off the hook. He even tries to let Epstein off the hook, too. Fortunately, LL and Henry didn't. Henry pays the salaries--not the Globe.
  21. The team right now resembles the Yawkey Country Club of the 1950s and early 60s. Dick Williams was brought in and changed that quickly--resulting in the 67 pennant. Valentine was brought in to do the same. He will have to get these guys in shape and have them play as a team again. Williams, by the way, became disfavored by Yawkey as too tough on his stars, and he promptly went out to Oakland and SD and won a championship or two. HOF manager.
