  1. I think most players these days hang on for the money. You have to be a head of a big corporation to get paid as well as a crappy veteran ML player.
  2. Whatever happened to that kid Nava? He looked like the best hitter at Pawtucket a couple years ago, and never did anything in Boston. Maybe he just never got the right shot. Maybe his confidence. Look at this kid Lin of the Knicks. You got to give these kids a shot. You never know. Rivers buries kids on the bench--which is why the Celtics are in trouble. Tito was never much for rookies, either. I hope Bobby V has a more open mind--especially with Iglesias and Lavarnway. And Kalish, when he's ready.
  3. I think Carpenter has been on their radar for awhile and might surprise. He may well have been preferred over McNutt--though they won't admit such things publically. The guy pitched well for the Cubs, and had that short bad stretch in AAA where he had some physical problems. He has a decent chance to rebound into a good setup guy or closer if he can find his command. Hard to find 26yo guys who can throw 100.
  4. I think Oswalt has priced himself out of the market. Too picky.
  5. This one is special, because the Red Sox have a new manager who is the 180 degree opposite of their old manager. What he does and how the team responds will be fascinating.
  6. Masters are few. Bachelors degrees, yes. But that's a big change from 10-20 years ago. That's why it was so easy for Beane and his Harvard assistant to do so well very early. Baseball is always a battle between the quantitative guys with education and the qualitative types with experience.
  7. Looks like the switch back to 3B was ill-advised. His abdominal problems are a flag. He probably should have taken some weight off to play 3B, but I doubt anybody told him to. I'm beginning to think the Cubs got Hoyer as backup insurance for Epstein.
  8. Re: Oswalt I don't get it. Nobody seems to want him, and HE's going to decide on his new team?
  9. Nice article here on Bobby Vs initial efforts in ST to refundamentalize the Red Sox, and make them into a team again. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AgAUZFxiRriHQRSsqofxgngRvLYF?slug=jp-passan_boston_red_sox_manager_bobby_valentine_022112 Unlike the Globe, Passan isn't afraid to point the finger at Francona.
  10. I agree many posters out there are smarter than those front office types. Not all, but quite a few lawyers, doctors, scientists, etc who do this stuff for fun. Even Henry does. Amazing how many GMs just walked off the street starting off as apprentices. There are no degrees in managing baseball teams.
  11. Yeah--it shows their thinking changed. They sign Scutaro and offer Ortiz arb. Then they trade Scutaro--seeing nobody wanted Ortiz. Muddled thinking. They did make a couple of nice deals for two closers.
  12. Another way of looking at this is they booted Epstein out the door and actually got something in return. A win-win situation.
  13. Chris Carpenter--Bard clone. Early Bard, that is. Throws 100, but watch out.
  14. The consensus is Manny is washed up as a hitter. $500K is a lot of money in Oakland. Plus he has that 50 game suspension...
  15. I understand Iggy was seen in Germany with ARod--at the Fountain of Youth Institute. Not that Iggy needs to get any younger.
  16. McNutt makes the most sense in terms of their needs.
  17. Bobby said today there might be some surprises in the lineup. You have to wonder if Iglesias will get a look. Cafardo has suggested it. Hmm... Shoppach is another guy who might see more use than expected.
  18. You have to also consider the Globe has focussed all the blame on the players, and said almost nothing about the management--except for making Henry look bad about Crawford. Not that Henry didn't look bad about Crawford. But they haven't said a bad word about Tito's or Epstein's performances. Keep in mind that Theo has always been buddy-buddy with Gammons, ex-Globe writer, who did not get along with Duquette when he was in Boston. The Globe printed stories about Tito's prescription drug use and possible philandering, but never criticized him for the lax attitude on the Red Sox. Nor have they criticized Epstein's wasteful spending.
  19. Cafardo's latest interview with Crawford: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2012/02/crawford_surpri.html Have to think his wrist was a factor in his hitting last year. The dumbest off-season public remark was Henry blurting out on WEEI he wasn't in favor of signing Crawford. Henry has expanded on his reasoning, which turn out to be all the obvious ones every Red Sox fan old enough to walk thought of immediately. Except Epstein.
