  1. On spring performance, I think there is zero correlation with veterans. But minor leaguers? You just don't know. You get a kid that raises some eyebrows, it's going to help him. he might even make the team if the need is there. Or he might be trade bait with enhanced value. Look at this SS Ciriaco. He hits a dinger to win the game the other night, and tonite gets the hit to beat the Yankees. You don't think he's made an impression? Valentine is showing he's pretty open minded about the roster so far. We'll see what he does.
  2. I think they'll rank these guys as potential starters, and bring at least 3 of them north. The guys with no options will get preference. I guess Aceves 5, Miller 6, Dubront 7, Padilla 8. They'll want at least 7 starters in case of injuries. Padilla has a tougher road because his contract says he can leave if he doesn't start. He didn't look that good to me the other day. Got hit his 2nd inning.
  3. Kalish was really the guy who should have played RF last year--he looked good enough for the Sox the year before in RF to get the opportunity. James had him penciled for a 20-20 year with the Sox, but that didn't happen because they had Drew and his $14 mil contract to play out. We know what happened to Kalish in Pawtucket--before Drew's back started aching. Of course Kalish's injury wasn't predictable, but maybe the lesson is you don't want to let these kids sit in the minors any longer than they have to. I hope they don't make the same mistake with Iglesias, though at least he doesn't have $14 mil playing in front of him. They were lucky, by the way, to get a decent year out of Reddick in RF--who was behind Kalish on the charts and who never hit as well in AAA. You just never know with these kids. Look at Lars Anderson right now. Can he play RF?
  4. The media is all about conflict: identify it, expand on it, create it--if you have to. They are in the entertainment business, and all the world is theater. Sports is no different from anything else. They are in business-trying to make a profit. It doesn't have a lot to do with reporting facts.
  5. So far so good for Johnson and Wainright. Miami will be in trouble if Johnson doesn't make it back.
  6. On Scutaro, I suspect somebody in the FO woke up one day and said: Scutaro's a year older at 36, and is an average SS. He might be a little worse this year, and we're paying him $6mil. We have decent replcement in Aviles who is a better hitter, younger, and we're paying him less. We also have a kid we're paying $2mil to play in AAA who is all-world defensively. Colorado calls us up and says we'll take Scutaro off your hands, pay his salary, and put him at 2B. So they effectively dropped Papi's salary $6mil by making the deal. Sounds like a good business decision to me. Seems like the Red Sox have had a persistent problem in recent years of holding onto aging, over-the-hill players and blocking younger players. I'm thinking of catcher, pitching and RF. Not to mention the Ellsbury fiasco. In that sense, the Scutaro move is a breath of fresh air. They got younger and cheaper.
  7. Have a heart. These media folks are just trying to learn a living. Don't take them too seriously. That was Ted Williams' problem. Half the time, those guys are just talking off the top of their heads. In the case of the Globe, the head is usually the Sports Editor, Joe Sullivan. I think the Sox are as good as any of those other teams. The others have just as many issues. When was the last time you saw anybody in the media take the Yankees apart? You take them apart, they look just as ugly as anyone else.
  8. Aceves looked better than Bard. Bard is throwing 96, but he was getting behind in the 2nd and didn't get to throw his slider much. Aceves had better location. I'd like to see him starting a game--not in relief. These two guys should have the inside track as 4th and 5th starters. Iglesias continues to impress. Hits a rope to right center that lackadaisical Upton let bounce off his glove. Shows up as a 3 base error, but it was a solid hit scoring 2 runs. Tried to steal home on the next pitch. Bobby has these guys on their toes on the bases. They are running. You look at plodding Youks at 3b, and you figure they need a SS who can cover some ground. The pitchers must be praying for Iglesias. Lars Anderson continues to look like a hitter. What's up with this guy. Good dugout interview with Salty. Nice kid. I like a kid with determination. MLB channel has had the Red Sox game two nights in a row. Nice treat to see the new park. Lucchino was on between innings. Didn't say much, as I recall. Amazing they have a kid Lin playing CF. Wonder if he can play basketball.
  9. Speaking about speed, I saw a dugout interview with Ozzie Guillen during the Marlins game today. They asked him if the team was going to run this year--with Reyes, Hanley, Bonaficio, etc. He said hell yes--I'm all about running. Some teams don't run because they're afraid to make an out. LOL.
  10. Looks like a lot bigger park than the old field. Plenty of seats available last night. The old park used to be a pain to get decent seats. Especially Yankee games--busloads of Yankee fans from Lauderdale made it hard to get seats on game day. Agree about the Jets. NY fans have become more arrogant in recent years, because NY has become the big media city and the TV networks showcase their teams. The Jets are a classless organization competing against a classy organization--the Giants ,owned by the Mara family. They use a lot of bluster and swagger to attract media attention. They'll probably try to get Peyton M. to come to NY to compete against his brother. I doubt he'll go for it.
  11. Bobby V should read this post, because it's right on the money. Certainly a solid argument for Iglesias. Lin would be a bit of a stretch--the Red Sox are stuck in an offensive mentality, which may be why they've gone astray the last few years. Run prevention has not been a priority. In the pitching, the catching and the defense on the field. It's disconcerting you don't hear these kind of arguments in the media--which is mainly offense-minded as well. All this emphasis on Iglesias hitting, for example--way overdone. The kid burns up the lower leagues, then has a partial off year hitting in Pawtucket--and he can't hit? I don't know--he's hitting so far in ST. Anybody calculate how many runs he would save playing SS this year?
  12. Considering they were tops in hitting last year, and in the middle of the pack in pitching, it would appear that pitching and defense would be a priority this year. That's a strong argument for Iglesias. It makes sense they should sacrifice a little in hitting at SS for a lot of defense. That's not where their hitting came from last year, anyways. Watching Papi get around on a left hander last night for a dinger, you have to be a fan. This guy seems to have turned it around. Was it just weight loss/conditioning? Or the wrist getting stronger? Or miracle juice? Who knows. But he's hitting again.
  13. Damon deserves a shot somewhere, but the Red Sox aren't a good fit. They weren't a few years back, either when they let him go. They felt he couldn't play CF for much more than a couple years, didn't need him in the corners, and they were right. He was a much better fit in NY with the short RF porch, and ultimately as a DH and corner outfielder. The Yankees were willing to pay much more for him, but then their salary standards are unique. Who else would pay a guy, Soriano, $13 mil to setup?
  14. So far so good for Iglesias. Maybe the kid can even hit. Somebody should give Johnny Damon a job. Hell of a ballplayer.
  15. Can't see Wainright 100% first year after surgery. Never happens.
  16. About SS, I don't think fans realize how much ground a SS has to cover, and how defense is so important at that position. SS can be a very lonely place. I remember many moons ago I had to play SS for one game--moving over from 2B--and it felt like I was in the middle of the Sahara desert. There is so much ground to cover, and you have to handle the relays from the OF, as well. You have to have a strong arm. A top level defensive SS who can cover a lot of ground can make a huge difference in a game for pitchers.
  17. I have good feelings about this team. They have a new manager and something to prove. Plus a lot of talent--enough to go all the way. It's a question of moxie and determination--plus luck. The Champion always has to be lucky.
  18. At this point, I doubt anyone cares. That goes for the other teams, too.
