  1. ESPN is not a Red Sox mouthpiece, which is an understatement. They are NY--in a nutshell. That's their market. Sure, they finally came out with a Boston version. But they have always been NY, which means they stroke the Yankees and all the other NY teams. If you work for ESPN, you are expected to say nice things about the Yankees, and not so nice things about the Red Sox. Schil's job is to come up with digs about the Red Sox. Same with Tito. Same with Bobby before he became fair game himself by putting on a Red Sox cap. The same thing, actually, with Gammons when he signed a big contract with ESPN years ago. He had to wear a NY cap--in part. He is now safely back in New England, and has become Red Sox friendly again.
  2. I still say the worst was Mike Torrez. He put Bucky who? on the map with that meatball hanger a little leaguer could have hit.
  3. Remember when Beckett beat the Yankees in Yankee Stadium to win the World series for the Marlins? Didn't he shut them out? He's also pitched a few big games like that in Boston. I like his makeup. He gets injured too much, but the Red Sox are known to pussy their pitchers. So maybe it's not his fault. I've never had a high regard for how the organization handles pitching.
  4. Who cares what Schilling or anybody else says on WEEI? They are in the entertainment business. You can't take any of that stuff seriously. Now when Henry makes a fool out of himself and goes on the air, that has a tendency to legitimatize what they do. And makes the Red Sox look worse. I think the Red Sox need a few lessons from the Patriots about how to handle the media. The first step is to lower your exposure, and stop equating the media to the fans. Not so.
  5. I don't know if we really know what's going on. Maybe they compromised. Iggy goes, Lavarnway stays. We'll see. I think the Red Sox are very PR conscious, so PR may be a factor. I see V is now considering Aviles leading off. The guy has a .318 OBP. Help.
  6. Belichick has a sign over the doorway to the Patriots dressing room. It says basically ignore the sports media. The Red Sox are way overexposed in the media. The open book manager selection process was a joke, and created a lot of the conflict problems they have right now.
  7. Ha. It's more like the rabbit and the greyhounds: when the hounds get closer, the rabbit just pulls away. The Red Sox are way overbudgeted, by 20-30 mil, which is why Henry pulled the plug. Stupid signings the last couple years did it--and did in Epstein.
  8. Did Ben win round 1? You'll see a Globe poll next. Just watch for it. I hope the Ben vs Bobby thing doesn't go on ad nauseam at the Globe all season. It could be distracting. I found Bobby's reason for optioning Iglesias pretty vague. Something about his look coming back to the dugout after an at bat. I thought he looked pretty good at the plate the times I saw him. Hit a couple of line drives in two at bats. A bit more bulked up. I think pulling his groin trying to steal home (Bobby called that?) slowed his progress enough to give them excuse to do what they wanted to do. They need his defense much more than they need Aviles "hitting." Wait 'till Youks gets hurt. For all you guys looking for the next ARod in Iggy, don't get your expectations too high. Lavarnway will be the next option down. Or they might keep him while Crawford is out. If they keep him, he's liable to steal the catching job.
  9. I think Henry is pissed about last year and has pulled the plug on the money. He probably feels he gave the GM too much purse string power, and he has taken it back. I doubt Ben can spend a dime without LLs approval. The Yankees don't operate that way. If they underachieve, they discard players--eating salary, and buy more. That's why you can't really compare the Yankees to anybody else, though the Angels now have the local TV revenue to free spend as well--which they are doing.
  10. Amazing how that young front office has appeared stodgy at times. Unwilling to move forward and take chances with young players. Francona pretty much towed the line in this respect--always staying with declining veterans too long. Valentine seems the opposite. Keep in mind that Valentine is older and has a more varied managing experience than Francona had. He also has to turn this team around quickly, and get its performance in line with expectations.
  11. Cafardo this morning seems to be bending a bit--maybe after a little talk with his boss. He now says Aviles has had a good spring--no mention of Iglesias. And he has climbed on board to Bard starting. Actually, most of the wavering about Bard has been generated by the media. I don't think the management has changed their view one bit about him starting. I do think bringing him in the 8th inning that one appearance was ill-conceived--a mistake by V. The spin in the Globe, except for Cafardo, has been Aviles for his hitting and "holding his own" at SS. And, of course, how dreadfully poor a hitter Iglesias is. No mention of the fact, with their questionable pitching and left side infield defense, they need Iglesias' range more than they need Aviles' bat. Much more. Lavarnway? No mention. The Red Sox have had a habit in recent years of leaving Florida without their best team-- thanks to their undying loyalties to a few over-the-hill veterans. They have managed to break that cord, but you still have to wonder if there are enough opportunities being afforded for young players on this team.
  12. You got it. He has to win. This is an expensive team which has done nothing the past few years. Henry needs to get tougher.
  13. Love to watch those hotties on the sports channels. Ever see Sam Ryan? The gal with the long chestnut hair to die for. And that sexy MILF on the NFL channel who looks great in tight skirts. They hire those gals to look good. Amen.
  14. Jimmy Piersall. Actually a very good player, but a wild and crazy guy who made Kevin Millar look like Lawrence Welk. He did have a nervous breakdown, and they actually made a Hollywood movie out of it, "Fear Strikes Out", where Piersall was played by Tony Perkins. He should have been played by Steve Martin--but it was before his time. Two bad players I can think of were Ted Williams' old caddies in LF. They would replace him in late innings in the 1950s: Gene Stephens and Karl Olsen. Stephens could run, but that's about it. Neither could hit a lick--but they were good caddies.
  15. So Bard has a so-so outing today, and V says hey he looked really good forget about all the runs scored--he had a good changeup and slider. So maybe Bard is still in the picture as a starter. They have a dilemma down there with Lavarnway, who got 3 hits today and will be hard to keep off the roster. The Sox in recent years always seem to have some mediocre veteran standing in the way of a better, younger talent in the minors. Shoppach seemed to be a sensible signing for defense, but he's now standing in the way of Lavarnway.
  16. Doubront has locked it up. Not sure about the other starter. V really wants Bard at closer or setup. He isn't sold on Melancon or maybe even Bailey.
  17. I don't think V dislikes Bard as a starter. From what I'm reading in Cafardo's column, he feels he needs him in the bullpen because he is concerned about Melancon and Bailey. He clearly has more options for starter than closer/setup.
  18. Cafardo's Sunday baseball column: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2012/03/25/ryan_lavarnway_and_jose_iglesias_could_offer_major_help_for_red_sox/?page=5 He is out and out saying Valentine wants Iglesias and Lavarnway on the roster. He sees Iglesias as the only real starting SS, and Lavarnway as a major league ready hitter about on par defensively as Salty. He apparently does not like Shoppach. And he prefers Bard in the bullpen, as he is concerned about Melancon and Bailey. You take a veteran like Valentine and his differences with a newbie like Ben C. You have to wonder about Ben, although I think the trades he's made so far are good ones.
  19. Rieser was obviously a victim of concussions. Today, he wouldn't be allowed to play. In those days, none of the walls were padded. Even today, not all the walls are padded. Player safety could be better. Baseline coaches could wear protective helmuts. Reinforced liners might be put in pitchers' caps. The head is what you want to protect. It's incredible the players union doesn't stress player safety the way they stress the top dollar.
  20. my oh my. a lot of graphic stuff here.
  21. Yeah, the Red Sox are getting killed in the media. Beer and chicken, power struggles, Bard, Iglesias, etc. Anything that can generate some conflict...and readership. Not that they don't deserve it. They brought it on themselves. But then, so did the Atlanta Braves. Atlanta who? Far from the maddening crowd.
  22. The players are apparently off-limits for these gals. Heidi was pals with Tek and maybe others. That Asian gal on MLB channel got bounced after the Tito rumors.
  23. Heidi got replaced by a brunette. But don't hold your breath. She'll be a bleach blonde before long--like the rest of them.
  24. The last couple years, Epstein seemed to be throwing darts at the wall--without much of a target. Some of them seemed to have boomeranged and hit him on the ass going out the door.
