  1. Excellent f***ing post. I have said these things many times. But there are those that believe the investment of $13. is a bargain, hence "no brainer". To me he is just taking up a roster spot that a fully healthy pitcher could fill. He never plays a full season. Why the hell would the Sox want him back after his consistent failures? I am hopeful that he was signed with the intent of trading him. One can hope.
  2. You know I'm sitting here wondering if I have this straight. Ted and I are the ones looking through rose colored glasses? I concede that I have been thirsting for something positive to happen regarding my Sox. So if this were a really bad deal I would be all over the Sox for being dumb.
  3. I believe that we all knows this and believe it to be true. And the Sox have shown this recently especially with the signing of two top closers only to find that neither could pitch ( at least while here ). The Sox pen was # 26 in MLB in 2015. A major overhaul is necessary. While technically you are correct when saying the Sox do not need a closer, that they are somewhat strong there, we will need a new closer and I say strike while the fire is hot. He is one of the best and he is available NOW. I disagree that a closer of equal value can be had much cheaper. I say with Paps getting his deal, Miller getting over-paid by NY, The Sox doling out $9. mil to Koji, well, maybe this is the new closer economics. The Sox need pitchers in the pen PERIOD. Which end they start at is far less important than what they finish with. The team is better. Maybe not better enough to justify your approval. But it has gotten better.
  4. He's ready for the scrap heap.
  5. Or go above the threshold or even try to trade the two stiffs while eating any portion that they can as long as room is created. Who cares what they spend to get themselves out of the mess they alone created? They have my monthly cable money and a lot more.
  6. But is it possible that the Sox needed a closer more than the Angels needed a SS???? 3.2 WAR sure sounds nice. But I will take one of the 4 best closers for my team and be prepared to pay a premium because the demand is greater than the supply.
  7. Yeah bingo if that is your opinion. I have not seen any support of this opinion. No data or stats. I am wondering why sk thinks Kimbrel is on the decline? Yes, I saw his major stats that fell off a little least year. K/9, ERA, HR. But how is that indicative of a decline? Isn't a decline something we reserve for a trend? What advanced stats can demonstrate that Kimbrel is in decline? Fatboy was in decline when Ben went out and signed him. He had been trending down for 3 years ( offensively ). That is definitely decline. I expect that Kimbrel may not have the 1.77 era again because of the change in league and division. Otherwise, I say he'll be really productive. I see no reason not to believe so. Yet.
  8. That would be cool.
  9. Seriously. Although I suspect that Porcello will prove to be better than he has shown, so far. He will have some value while the other two remain useless over-paid schlock.
  10. It is a bolder and stronger move, yes. But Ben did get Smiley and Hannigan.
  11. I think it was a ballsy move that stands a decent chance of being a major reason this team may be on the upswing. That pen needs quality arms that stand a good chance of performing at a high level while remaining productive for a few years. 2-3 more decent arms and 1-2 top of the rotation guys and this team is instantly a favorite. Of course I maintain that there is at least a chance that DD does not go out and get a #1 starter. If so, a strong pen is even more useful. In any case, as a700 has said, my team just got better.
  12. My name is Spudboy and I endorse this post.
  13. On the other hand, what were the odds that one , let alone all four prospects, would end up being productive players for the Sox? This team needs quality bp arms. If Kimbrel is healthy than this was a justifiable deal.
  14. Boy did his value go through the roof. Last off season he could hardly get anyone interested in him.
  15. Kimmi is correct. They clearly wanted to go younger with real defense.
  16. I'll puke if they move either Bogey or Betts.
  17. One more thing, Votto has a 10/225 deal running through 2023 and is 32. Great player but a big tab.
  18. The haul going the other way would have to be huge and would deplete the coins that the Sox could need to acquire a top of the rotation guy. Yes, Voto would fill a need. Chapman would be too. But would this be the best utilization of resources?
  19. It is clear that Swihart has the better bat based on his second half performance. But I recall Vasquez' bat showing some promise in the latter half of 2014. I think Vasquez has the tools to become a decent offensive catcher. Not great but okay. The Sox are fortunate to have an abundance of options at catcher. Even Leone is pretty good defensively ( a black hole at bat ).
  20. s*** happens. Must be tough to lose a child that young.
  21. From Abraham in Boca: " In speaking to several executives, it’s clear that Ben Cherington will not lack for employment opportunities. The consensus is that many of his moves will pay off long-term for the Red Sox and that several mistakes made on his watch were the product of decisions made above him." So that's cool. Kimmi should be happy.
  22. To me it seems Gardner for Heyward is a lateral move. Throw in Miller and it is lopsided. Why would the Yankees do that? What is the big attraction with Heyward? His power never developed. He plays decent defense and is okay offensively. What does he bring that Gardner does not have?
  23. Hanley for Miller straight up!
