So why stay with AZ then if he's from FL and still resides there in the offseason? Also, maintaining two homes is pretty easy if you have $100M.

My worry is that he plays well and the Sox prevent him from getting the option by 20 ab's or so. To me, I think Hanley would then have a legit gripe and could try to sue the Sox for the $20M. That would be a PR nightmare for the Sox and could hinder them signing FA's in the future. My position has nothing to do with how well Hanley may or may not play this year.

And still, THE BEST WAY TO HAVE HANLEY NOT GET HIS VESTING OPTION IS TO JUST NOT HAVE HIM PLAY FOR THE SOX THIS YEAR. That's not really up for debate. Waiving him now automatically gets rid of him potentially earning that vesting option.

Correct. To me, I'd rather him go play for the O's this year and rake than have to pay him a dime next season.

Sure, he's going to get more rest days going forward. I'm not sure it will be more likely to prevent him from getting injured though.

The best way to prevent Hanley from vesting is to sign JD and waive Hanley.

Why take a one year deal to become a FA during next offseason? It makes no sense. If JD doesn't play a full year, his market value goes crashing down because everyone will see that he's a part time player. If he plays well, he'll still be up against transcendent players like Harper and Machado who can mash AND play the field. He should take the money now IMO.

Do these same people take to the streets when Marky Mark is paid millions of dollars to be in a movie nobody will watch? At least baseball players can entertain you almost every day for 6 months.

Why does snow have anything to do with it? Most players only live here April - September. Not much snow then.

I think it means that DD doesn't think the other options (LoMo, Duda, etc.) are much better than Hanley.

If you have the payroll and an open spot, it wasn't a big deal two years ago. However, it would have been dumb to bring him back last year. The Sox were lucky enough to move him to Philly. Remember that 2015 was his highest WAR season. He's always had an up and down career, but I believe that if he could have had back to back decent WAR years that he would have earned a good contract. He sucked in 2016 in the rotation and was marginally better in the pen. He's not worth $13M in the pen tho.

Well, a lot of Pedroia's issues are contact related (with the ground, a cleat, a base, etc.). I'm not sure resting Pedroia will prevent him from hurting himself while diving for a ball.

Don't say nonsense like "well, we know differently 60 years later". People knew back in the 60's, 70's and 80's that he was racist scum. Hell, I did a high school project on racism in Boston sports in the early 90's off of books and articles from decades before. Yes, Tom Yawkey was a racist.
