  1. SOSH is the most unfun place in the Red Sox universe.
  2. From Sox Prospects: the organization is reportedly making significant changes to Houck's mechanics and pitch arsenal; could look like a completely different pitcher from the one drafted within a year or two.
  3. He'll be ready to go by then. I bet Pedey is chomping at the bit to be with the big club.
  4. I learned about this forum back in olden times when a Dodgers board I was posting on raided TalkSox because of SeaBeachFred (I wasn't a fan of los Doyers, but had just moved to LA and wanted to learn more about the team since I enjoyed listening to Vin Scully on the radio so much). I've been asked to post on other forums from time to time, but they are always just shitshows. I prefer the TS shitshow more.
  5. It just comes down to people not liking new stuff. They are worried about the game passing them by every time Speier walks onto a NESN set. There are a lot of things to like and not like about a Sox presentation these days. Sure, the analytics can be overwhelming. However, there are lots of other things people don't like: Eckisms (cheese), Wally (back in my day the Sox didn't have blah blah blah), Sweet Caroline (but what if they are losing badly in the 8th), the k zone (makes us too critical of umpires who are great Americans and we should love them for the wonderful service they provide and they surely need their own national holiday), instant replay, baggy baseball unis (and other accoutrements) and all the other BS shown on the screen during a game (crawl on the bottom, Mid 5th report, etc.). There's always something that you probably need to ignore just for your own sanity. Or just be miserable. Either way. Whatever.
  6. I remember Iggy booting a few balls in the ALCS that year. Really helped us out!
  7. If that's your definition of eloquent, I'm not sure what to say.
  8. Traditional stats aren't good at showing things like baserunning or fielding, which WAR attempts to utilize.
  9. No, but you did say the eye test from a group of retirees (simply because of the amount of time spent on their couches) is more reliable than someone who uses a combination of stats and their own beliefs.
  10. BDC was 50% people that were rejected from TalkSox. Sad!
  11. My biggest concern with Vaz is that his overall defensive game seems to either be trending downward or just not improving to what we expected. Leon is fine defensively. I rarely watch a Sandy game and wonder what the heck he's doing back there. Somedays, Vaz just seems out to lunch.
  12. @based_ball everyone thinks the Rays are blazing some new trail but the Orioles have been using one-inning starting pitchers for years
  13. I do my judging on Memorial Day.
  14. "Offensive"? No. Just some catchers that can be adequate. If Vaz and Leon can hit like they have in the past, they're fine.
  15. This is basically the SBF argument as to why he knows more than anyone else, because he's old as dirt. There are plenty enough gray haired people that can enjoy stats for what they are.
  16. I've heard that catcher balks are rare.
  17. that is certainly true.
  18. I think him being overmatched by 90mph heaters in the middle of the zone has people a little worried.
  19. I think the pile would be a little shorter.
  20. Not satisfied, Scully dug some more and found an even earlier example. Long before either Williams faced a defensive shift, a manager named Ferguson had moved his second baseman to the shortstop side of the bag against a right-handed hitter. "So if you're talking about shifts," Scully said, "it might go to 1877."
  21. Here's a shift in 1969: https://twitter.com/peterhartlaub/status/954575820168749056/photo/1?tfw_site=ringer&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theringer.com%2Fmlb%2F2018%2F3%2F9%2F17099736%2Fmlb-preview-past-present-future-of-outfield-shifting-phillies
  22. Wasn't the shift created to combat Teddy Ballgame?
  23. If Vaz/Leon start to hit and Pedey takes over 2b full time, I think the hand-wringing about JBJ goes away.
  24. Well, basketball has Tommy Points. Maybe the Sox need Dirt Doggers?
