  1. @BaseballAmerica listing Mitty SS Nick Yorke as one of 10 sleepers in next week's abbreviated 5-rnd draft. Ranked 96th-best prospect overall. Big bat
  2. You don’t draft for immediate need.
  3. Went underslot because they lost the 2nd rounder. Allows them to go over slot later.
  4. http://news.soxprospects.com/2020/06/red-sox-select-nick-yorke-with-17th.html?m=1 With the 17th overall pick in the 2020 First-Year Player MLB Draft, the Red Sox selected Nick Yorke, a second baseman from Archbishop Mitty High School (Calf.). Yorke is ranked 96th by Baseball America, 139th by MLB.com, and 271st by Perfect Game USA. Yorke is a bat-first middle infielder whose hit tool is his carrying tool. Per Baseball America scouts say that York has one of the best hit tools on the west coast. MLB.com gave his hit tool a future 55 grade and described his swing as pure with an advanced approach. While he doesn’t have much current power and projects to have below-average power moving forward, reports had his power improving during the shortened spring season. At 6-feet, 200 pounds, the 18-year-old has a mature frame. He was announced as a second baseman, but he played shortstop in high school. Industry sources say that he has the hands, range, and instincts to play there, but he had shoulder surgery in 2018 which forced him to DH his entire junior season, and the arm strength has not yet fully returned. Yorke is committed to the University of Arizona. As is clear from his industry rankings, Yorke was projected to go much later in the draft, and his selection at the 17th overall pick is likely an indication that the Red Sox had an agreement to sign him for an under-slot bonus. They are without their second-round pick this season as a result of the sign-stealing investigation, and an under-slot deal would give them more funds and flexibility to go over slot later in the draft. 5. ^^^ And the owners have been far more publuc than the players.
  6. "The union rejected MLB's latest proposal for a 76-game season at 75 percent prorated pay and countered with an 89-game campaign that would include full prorated salary shares." The owners need to pay 100% prorated pay. Taking anything less makes no sense.
  7. If you want to know what the owners are thinking this year, take a look at how the amateur draft has been set up. They are purely in cost cutting mode. There's going to be no MiLB season and they are more than happy to not have one (not realizing the long term affect this could have on the game).
  8. 100%
  9. It's a vocal minority that needs to be banned from Fenway IMO.
  10. The players are fine with prorated play. They just don't want a short season and long playoffs since they aren't paid normally during the playoffs. The players' biggest gripe was that the owners were pushing revenue sharing and hiding their financials while claiming they are going to lose billions of dollars this year.
  11. I was part of union negotiations at my past job. The owners were always going to go to the table with giving up the least amount and hoping to get concessions that favor themselves for the next CBA. I think they may have been a little too aggressive considering the fact that there are no sporting events going on right now and all eyes are on these negotiations. I think the biggest reason that they are running into this issue is because the whole season could be cancelled and there is a potential strike/lockout since the current CBA is going to expire next season and the players have been vocal about Tony Clark not signing off on a good deal last time. The SoxProspects podcast the past two weeks has done a good job of talking about how the negotiations have progressed so far and where the owners have possibly gone wrong.
  12. It’s Wally’s fault. 100%
  13. I did a lengthy senior project on racism and professional sports in Boston and have been depressed ever since.
  14. Boston is a highly segregated city. https://www.masslive.com/news/boston/2015/08/boston_is_7th_most_racially_se.html My first hand experience of living in the city for over 10 years agrees with this assessment.
  15. The problem is that Boston tends to say “yeah, but there’s racists elsewhere too” rather than step up and get rid of that s***. It’s always unacceptable.
  16. https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2020/06/05/report-mlb-owners-want-a-48-game-season/ 48 game season? Why not just make it 60 and use day/night double headers? Day baseball could be great advertisement to kids stuck at home. Make it fun. Let players be mic'ed up. You can have a kid centric physics lesson, plant care with the groundskeeping crew, math, etc. Could be an interesting idea.
  17. There’s a better thread for some of these comments maybe.
  18. Reminds me of Nero fiddling while Rome burned. Owners don't see the negative trajectory this sport has.
  19. If the owners are going to lose money this year, wouldn't it be in their best interests for highly paid players to sit out? Why would they care?
  20. What we could be missing: @BSmile 10 Years Ago Today: Detroit #Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga is robbed of a perfect game vs. the Cleveland Guardians after a blown call by umpire Jim Joyce (June 2, 2010) #MLB #Baseball #History When robot umps and Skynet are united, I'm going to send one Terminator style into the past and fix this game.
  21. Seems to me that the owners would rather not have a season at all, then have a season without ticket sales.
  22. One of MLB's original suggestions was a season that was played in ST facilities that went into December.
  23. 1. KC Royals ownership is going to pay all MiLBers through the end of the season. 2. Nationals ownership is cutting their pay, so Nationals MLB players are going to make the MiLBers whole.
  24. It's looking less likely that it'll be ready that quickly since they are now in a standoff. They'll still need about 3-4 weeks of modified ST. Need to figure out schedules and figure out if any players are going to sit out. Seems like an 81 game season may be pushing it. I'd be fine with a 60 game regular season and an extended playoff schedule where teams that didn't make the playoffs still have a few weeks to play against each other.
