  1. @MattGelb For what it's worth, the Phillies do not appear to benefit much from this happening right now. Had Song not been discharged until after 2023 season, he would have only had to spend 90 days on active MLB roster in 2024 to satisfy Rule 5 requirements. Now, it has to be all of '23.
  2. Like I said, this has all the makings of a really weird year for the Sox.
  3. There are several issues at play. 1. We don't know how Song got out of the Navy or when the decision was made. 2. We don't know what his arm is going to look like or how much he has thrown. 3. We have never seen him throw in a level higher than rookie ball. Many prospects flame out after succeeding at that level. 4. If the Sox put him on the 40 man and put him onto the Military List, he'd still lose option years. If I had to call it, Ward will be a better pitcher this year than Song.
  4. DD loves his guys though. We don't have much left from that era to deal!
  5. @LouMerloni Day 1 in Ft Myers. I like watching guys I have t seen before. Yoshida hitting bombs. He’s not a slap hitter. Rafaela has some serious thunder in his hands. Wow. I like updates like this.
  6. Most likely dealt. Who knows what he even looks like after 3 years without pitching competitively. See if they'll take Brasier for him.
  7. @GlobeChadFinn Nice to see 2012 Red Sox BABIP legend Pedro Ciriaco’s name among the team’s organizational moves today. He was hired as a Dominican Summer League instructor, presumably specializing in Hitting ‘Em Where They Ain’t.
  8. We weren't strung along by Song. It was out of his hands. DD knew when to swoop in.
  9. Kluber pitched a full season last year. Pivetta pitched a full season last year. Bello pitched a full season last year. The question marks are Sale, Paxton and Whitlock. I'm just assuming that Sale's competitiveness is going to win out one of these years so may as well bet on this one. He said he's "a real boy" this year so he must be ready to go. Last year's staff included the ever injured Eovaldi, Mr Half-Year Rich Hill and Wacha who seems to reach his annual innings limit at 125 since 2018. There are question marks about this season, but I feel better about these question marks.
  10. @MattGelb Noah Song, who is arriving at the Phillies complex today, must be added to the 40-man roster by Opening Day. He can remain on the military list until then. He faces a tall task trying to make a big-league team after three years without pitching. But it’s real interesting.
  11. 2.6 bWAR. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ramirha01.shtml
  12. I forgot that Adrian Gonzalez was a Red Sox. Either AGon or Napoli.
  13. I didn't have Paxton getting 120.
  14. Yorke could go up with a bounce back year too.
  15. I think he's going to piggyback at first with Paxton which will reduce his innings. He dealt with an injury last season in his first stint in the rotation. Maybe he just can't stick in the rotation? Maybe Paxton does just enough to stick around in the rotation long enough to keep Whitlock's innings down? IDK. The other 4 I wouldn't hold back on.
  16. bWAR or fWAR? If I had to guess, maybe Youk? Did Napoli get to 3bWAR?
  17. I disagree: Kluber Pivetta Bello Sale 120 isn't a really high number. Even frequently injured Michael Wacha got there last year.
  18. FanGraphs Top 100: Mayer 18 Bleis 20 Casas 29 Rafaela 49 Yorke 102
  19. Pitch clock will be on for Saturday, not the Northeastern game.
  20. I'm not all that interested in seeing Houck TBH. He hasn't shown that much to me and I'm not sure what role they are going to throw him in. Casas, Bello and Whitlock should be fun to watch. I'm very interested in seeing what Yoshida can bring this year. Hopeful? The pen should be much better this year and Jansen is a good dude. Having Story out is pretty deflating, but that's on Bloom to figure out.
  21. @BeyondtheMnstr Oddanier Mosqueda will start for the Red Sox in spring training opener against Northeastern
  22. The extra money will keep him in a more expensive recovery bubble during downtime so that he's less likely to be injured.
  23. By virtue of him being given a starting OFer spot for 3 straight seasons, he was able to amass a certain amount of stats. However, if you look at qualified players, he's in the bottom 1/4 of those. In 2022, he was 75th in fWAR for OFers with playing time similar to Lance Thomas of WSH. Seems mediocre enough to me.
  24. That's not what I said and that's not what moon was saying back before the offseason began. The amount of payroll flexibility was seen as a big plus for bolstering the rotation and bringing in a top of the rotation starter, or at least two starters. There were visions of signing a high priced SS. These things didn't happen.
  25. Players will never go for that, nor should they.
