  1. https://tht.fangraphs.com/tommy-john-surgery-success-rates-in-the-majors/ That's a very high estimate. Now do amount of innings pitched post surgery. From your source: Some of the most famous pitchers in MLB history have undergone tommy john surgery, including: Mariano Rivera LOL DIDN'T HAVE TJS Johan Santana 1.5 fWAR after TJS Chris Sale Just LOL Jacob DeGrom Walking IL Adam Wainwright No longer throws a slider post TJS Steven Strasburg Holy s*** Justin Verlander One good year post TJS These are just a few of the many successful pitchers who have been able to come back from tommy john surgery and return to their previous level of play.
  2. 2020: 82.3 mph, 87.3 max 2021: 79.1 mph, 84.4 max 2022: 76.1 mph, 79.5 max If it returns, where does it return to? With the warning signs in 21, why did the Sox think they could move him to SS?
  3. Nick Pivetta last 5 starts: 24.2 IP 8.39 ERA 6.12 FIP 1.62 WHIP 1 QS 24 K 10 BB 38 GameScore The average Pivetta start: 5 IP 4 ER 5 K 2 BB 1 HR https://www.fangraphs.com/wins.aspx?date=2023-04-28&team=Red%20Sox&dh=0 At some point, is it good enough if you're pushing someone else to the pen?
  4. LOL, no. This is not the case. Cite your source. Leg and core strength are the primary force generators for throwing velocity. The new elbow ligament does not create new leg strength, but the by product of a Tommy John Surgery rehab program is improved length strength that can yield new velo. In addition, players following TJ surgery & rehab tend to concentrate much more on developing great pitching mechanics. From a research analytical perspective, we say that Tommy John Surgery may be associated with increased velo, but Tommy John Surgery is not causal to increased velo. What Does The Research Say For Professional Baseball? For professional players already performing at the extreme limits of their velocity, velo may not go up after surgery. To better answer this, some colleagues and I conducted a study in 2014 that examined velocity in professional pitchers before and after Tommy John Surgery. When we compared 3 years prior to TJ with 3 years after TJ, there was no difference in fastball velocity for starting pitchers in Major League Baseball. https://www.drahmadsportsmedicine.com/question-will-velocity-go-tommy-john-surgery/
  5. Coming off modified TJS? Results may vary!
  6. This is a LIE. In 2022, Story threw an average of 76.1mph last year with a top velo of 79.5. Swanson averaged 79.2mph and had a top velo of 87. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/arm-strength?type=player&year=2022&minThrows=100&pos=&team=
  7. Duran doesn't have a long enough track record, but we know his arm isn't good. Duvall has won a GG and can at least fake it in CF.
  8. It's early in the season and he's stuck with Pivetta. He was also anchored to early season Kluber/Sale who I don't think Wong would have done any better with. It appears that Wong is a much improved catcher and should probably be getting the 60/40 split at least, but I think McGuire's numbers are skewed negatively. McGuire's big problem right now is his noodle arm and Wong has a rocket. If McGuire is just the backup, he's a pretty decent one.
  9. @IanCundall Red Sox MiLB leaders for average FB velo in April: 1 Alex Hoppe - 97.1 2 Luis Guerrero - 96.7 3 Brayan Bello - 95.7 4 Bryan Mata - 95.6 5 Cam Booser - 95.5 6 Ryan Fernandez - 95.5 7 Chase Shugart - 95 8 Luis Perales - 95 9 CJ Liu - 94.8 10 Felix Cepeda - 94.7 No surprise, but Shane Drohan had the largest avg. fastball velo gain (vs. 2022) in the Red Sox system in April at 1.8 mph. Three other players gained >1 mph: CJ Liu, Juan Daniel Encarnacion & Rio Gomez. 2 other noteworthy gainers: Jedixson Paez & Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz at 0.7 mph.
  10. Not yet. Meidroth will probably split time at 2B/3B/DH with Yorke and Lugo. The promotion makes room for Bonaci in GRE who is coming back from injury. Scott and Hickey probably share time behind the dish 50/50. Hickey has the high upside, but needs lots of work. Scott can play a little LF still too.
  11. Hickey needs a lot of work behind the plate. There's a good chance he'll need to be moved off the position. Runners are 37/37 in SB chances this season against him. Meidroth has a very advanced approach, but has a high GB% (kind of like what we saw with early Duran). We'll see if his numbers cool off a little. These players were just too good to leave in A+.
  12. If that's the case, they should move a guy like Houck to the pen because he can throw multiple innings.
  13. If they fix him, I'm going to quit watching baseball.
  14. Hickey and Meidroth were just promoted to AA. @SoxProspects Some early season promotions/movement today. INF Edwin Diaz: AA -> AAA C Nathan Hickey (#SP60 #15) A+ -> AA 2B/3B Chase Meidroth (#22) A+ -> AA RHP Ryan Zeferjahn (#51) Activated from the 7-day IL (AA) C Matt Donlan (AA) + LHP Skyer Arias (AA) -> Development List @alexspeier A bit of early season movement is coming today in the Red Sox system, with C Nathan Hickey and IF Chase Meidroth expected to move from High-A Greenville to Double-A Portland. Meidroth - a 4th rounder in ‘22- is hitting .338/.495/.459 w/more BBs than Ks. He needs to be challenged. @alexspeier Hickey, a ‘21 5th rounder - is hitting .294/.402/.588 for Greenville. He spent about half of last year in Greenville. Like Meidroth, his advanced approach likely requires the challenge of the upper levels. Portland’s staff also has two catching instructors.
  15. FanGraphs had a nice article on Connor Wong today. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/connor-wong-is-popping-and-blocking/
  16. moon brought him up. He's not even on my radar.
  17. Luis De La Rosa. https://soxprospects.com/players/delarosa-luis.htm
  18. De La Rosa or Guerrero? Are you getting two players confused? Guerrero is the pure relief guy. DLR is the org guy.
  19. Unlike the Las Vegas Sin. Other previously used names: Rattlers Thunder Hawks Aviators Lights Ramblers Vipers All pretty boring names. I'd go with the Las Vegas Demolition. The logo would be an imploding Vegas hotel.
  20. Baseball America put this on the "Hot Sheet" today: "HELIUM -- Roman Anthony, OF, Red Sox. Anthony’s numbers this season might not jump off the page, but scouts who have seen him believe the ingredients are there for a potentially special player."
  21. Las Vegas Golden Knights. That has a ring to it.
  22. Maybe. We don't typically see guys come completely out of nowhere, but he could end up being a middle reliever or something.
  23. There's already an MiLB stadium there that the A's are thinking of moving to in the meantime. Probably few day games which really only affects getaway days.
  24. Yeah, MLB wouldn't want to be associated with gambling at this point. THIS POST BROUGHT TO YOU BY DRAFT KINGS!!!!
  25. Guerrero is NOT a starter. He is a pure reliever but can be a good one. Wikelman had a horrible April. He pitched well last time out. Due to his age, I think he's out of the system before he makes it to MLB. De La Rosa is not even in the Top 60 of prospects. He's an org guy. Walter is a fringe starter, probably a reliever as his velo has ticked down. Mata is a pen arm IMO.
