  1. I just hope you didn't jinx us. You DO realize that if anyone other than the Red Sox sign Teixeira we're going to have to do something to Gom to keep him from gloating in here, and by gloating I mean gloating a LOT.
  2. I don't really worry too much about a prospect or get that excited about them until they start doing it in AA. That's about the point where I start raving. That's why Lars Anderson excites me now, but not so much last year. THat's also the point where I fell in love with Jed Lowrie and started backing off my skepticism of Ellsbury. Until they hit AA I as a fan say let them come as they may and we'll see what they do once they play against high minors competition.
  3. ARGGH. Don't do that.
  4. It's probably the best option if you assume that Tek will get the lion's share of the starts. Kottaras will take lefthanded at bats away from Varitek if he hits well, which is Tek's weak side.
  5. Most likely the catcher will be batting 9th for most of the early part of the year unless that catcher is named Jason Varitek. Maybe even then. If it's Kottaras though for example he'll be brought along as gently as possible. I suspect our catching tandem will either be Tek-Kottaras or Kottaras-Cash/Brown.
  6. Royals sign Kyle Farnsworth for freakin' 5 million dollars a year. First the Jacobs trade, then trading for every player in the universe not good enough to stay on the Braves roster, now this. Looks a lot like more years of misery for KC.
  7. You have to wonder that? Once again, the only surprise this offseason has been the total lack of surprises.
  8. Wow, it just never stops.
  9. Yep, just like with Gagne. Anyway, in order to get picks from 'Tek someone other than us will have to sign Tek. With the Tigers' trade for Laird, one of the places that might have been interested in Tek has filled their holes. Who is still in the market for a veteran catcher right now? I can't pick out any dark horses that are a real possibility.
  10. Actually, we get 2 picks anyway. It's just a question of whether we get 1+1a or 1a+2.

  12. I think this is where Tito's value really shines through. He's so good at managing people that he's got these youngsters in the palm of his hands and there's a lot of mutual respect there. At different times Lester, Pedroia, Lowrie, Lester, Delcarmen, and even firey guys like Youkilis and Papelbon have expressed their respect and admiration of Terry Francona. There's a strong sense that these players know that Tito has their back and I bet they give him more on the field because of that than they'd give, say, Ozzie Guillen (an example of a decent manager who wins games, but one who sets himself up as more of a taskmaster and less of a gentle but determined old uncle). Would not be surprised at all if the unspoken part of why Pedroia resigned on the cheap is to keep working for his cribbage partner. And for that reason alone, I do expect Lester, at least, to sign an extension before the All-Star Break next year.
  13. I know you meant unanimous, but I found the notion of an anonymous induction amusing. This just in: For immense contributions to the sport, the BWAA has inducted the Player To Be Named Later to the major league baseball hall of fame.
  14. Who started it in Boston. I posted this in another forum and got a history lesson from someone who basically said it started with the 1960's celtics.
  15. The core philosophy of the Patriots' Way: Bring in players who do their jobs well and are responsible and disciplined, and center the team around a good defense a balanced offense. The core philosophy of the Celtics' Way: Bring in players who play their roles well and are responsible and disciplined, and center the team around a good defense, a solid offense and a deep bench. The core philosophy of the Red Sox Way: Bring in players who play their positions well and are responsible and disciplined, and center the team around good pitching and defense and a deep lineup. The core philosophy of the Bruins Way: Bring in players who play the game the right way and are responsible and disciplined, and center the team around good defense and goaltending and a balanced 3 line offensive attack.

I'm absolutely pumped to see Japanese pitchers thinking about the Sox and the Sox expanding aggressively into the world's second largest baseball market. We've ignored Japan for far too long. If the Japanese baseball oligarchs have a problem with us engaging with young Japanese baseball players, they can beat us in the free market and keep quality players around by treating them well and keeping their loyalty. EARN it in other words. BTW -- don't blame this all on Daisuke. When we had those two games in Japan, Oki got cheered at least as much. Daisuke is the cultural icon, but Oki has a role to play in how the Japanese see us as well, and if he makes it, so will Tazawa.
  17. Alright, I see it. I just wanted to make sure that we made a distinction between this and the kind of "grinder" we see sometimes around the league who makes Glen Metropolit look like Phil Kessel on the ice but "brings the right attitude." BTW: Metro or Yelle?
  18. That gets backed up on the field. I have no problem with smack talk when the player follows through. Unless it's against us, but even then I have to admit that at least, yes, the player did walk the talk.

Well whether it's a tool or not, it's what separates Ichiro from the true greats like Wade Boggs or even Todd Helton, who's a much much MUCH better baseball player than Ichiro.
  20. That's a mischaracterization of the Bruins, Rican. What they brought, fourth-liners like Yelle excepted, in are guys with offensive and defensive upside and the right attitude to get by as grinders until they make the jump. Kobasew, Ferrence, Wideman, all good examples of this. Frankly I wish Chia would get out of the habit of going to FA at all. FA signings as a way to get key players doesn't seem to turn the trick as well as developing your own. Other than Blake Wheeler, we haven't really had a hit at FA since Chara and Savard.

Actually he's a three tool player. He makes great contact but he doesn't exactly take a ton of walks. If he did, then he really would be a monster. And then there's the fact that the Ichiro-to-CF experiment seems to have been abandoned, making him not just an outfielder with no power, but a CORNER outfielder with no power. Ichiro Suzuki is an average offensive baseball player.
  22. Mind you, 3-4 Pedroias wouldn't be a bad thing to have, you could have the others play SS, CF, 3B and DH and have a moderately awesome lineup.

Ace pitcher > Speedy contact hitter with no other tools. Ichiro is insanely overrated.
