1. Wha.....?
2. Not so old that he can't make a comeback if he gets himself back together. Someone will take a flier.
3. I don't think it's so clear that Pedroia > Youkilis. What Pedroia is doing is great for a middle infielder, but Youkilis emerged as a middle of the order bat out of literally nowhere. I'm not even sure Billy Beane saw him developing this much power. Also, Youks has versatility over Pedroia, who plays one position to Youk's two (if you add in short for Peddy, I get to add corner outfield for Youkilis)
4. Dead heat between Youks and Lester.
5. Granted, but Bates was a polished hitter when he was drafted, it wasn't that much of a stretch to think he could handle a pitcher or two who hadn't seen him too many times before and didn't have a book on him. I look at Bates and I see a Ryan Garko type. Polished, capable and disciplined, without a ton of upside and probably best suited for a platoon or bench role longterm, but fully capable of playing a solid starting 1B in the absence of better options. And every now and again one of those guys goes from Ryan Garko to Ryan Howard.
6. Do we regularly decide player's futures based on sample sizes of 70 AB's or less? No. No, we do not. And Bell has hit well enough in the last 2 years to deserve more credit than you're giving him.
7. Worse than the 2006 Royals who sent "All Star" Mark Redman to the game because they didn't have a single credible player on their roster?
8. I did say Zimmerman was a decent defender but whatever. Point is, this is a bad, bad baseball team. I took that squad over in one of those computer simulation leagues, and I had to use every cheap unrealistic trick in the league to survive.
9. Their infield is pretty miserable too. Their only half decent defender around the horn is Zimmerman. Guzman is decent but error prone at short, they have a fail salad at second, and Johnson plays like an old man with a bad leg at first base.
10. That team is that bad on paper. THey have one starter and no relievers, and only 3 or 4 above average hitters (depending on where you rate Elijah Dukes).
11. Maybe I misjudged the situation a little but I thought this was at least a borderline case. I don't think it's realistic that someone will offer Baldelli money to start for them. We've seen this movie before and I think everyone's aware, like a700 said, that the problem isn't really fixed, that all we're doing is putting baldelli in a position where he can cope with it. Now with that said, a team like the Cubs or Cardinals could go after the guy for a more active platoonish role than the Sox would give Baldelli, but certainly no team in this league is crazy enough to try to make Baldelli a full-time starter again or try to make him play more than once or twice a week. No matter where he goes, if he gets 400 at bats in any season it's because something's gone wrong for someone. Besides, I was wanting to include those lines in the chart anyway for the next time Bay extension talks top the forum, so they'll be there.
12. I suggest an addendum to the table.
Topic|Team|Content Prospect|Yankees|The player in question is made of 150% pure awesomeness. Fear us. Prospect|Sox|He could be good, but this is why he won't be. Signing|Yankees|This is the missing piece. We'll win 160 games, and the umps will screw us out of 2. Signing|Sox|Risky move, overpaid here, they'll regret this. Injury|Yankees|They don't get hurt. Hypothetically, if they did, the recovery will be speedy with no impact to ability. Injury|Sox|Everyone is a ticking time bomb. Once hurt, they'll never heal right. Pending FA|Yankees|He will surely sign with the Yankees, or if not, good riddance to bad rubbish Pending FA|Sox|He will reject any deal with Boston and sign with New York
13. That's reasonable. Lars at best isn't going to come up permanently until Lowell's contract is finished, so all this does to franchise strategy is expand the window for one Aaron Bates, who really impressed me this afternoon by showing his potential at the plate and in the field and who should have additional chances to get his toe in the door throughout his age 25 and 26 seasons, which is just the right time for a developing B grade prospect to get a chance to make his case..
14. Bottom line, Bates just demonstrated a bit of potential usefulness. He will now go down to Pawtucket. If he hits there, we may see Bates again instead of Bailey the next time we need a righthander. I nominate that we nickname Aaron Bates "Psycho." Just because.... you know... Bates.
15. Next year he won't need to be shuttled.
16. Almost as good as relying on below average singles hitting walknophobe OF/1b's. At least Bates and Bell have a bit of talent and some major league upside, Kotsay's just Kotsay and not only will he not get better, he'll get worse.
17. He'll more than do for an emergency option (Bell).
18. Seems fine right now. it's not like we can't go to Bubba Bell if Baldelli is actually hurt,
19. Kotsay's. Combine Bates and a healthy Baldelli and Kotsay is obsolete.
20. He'll be back. He just made sure of that.
21. Seeing what they have in case it's time to deal Brad Penny? Or just a throwaway start to line up the rotation the way Tito wants it for the second half?
22. How on earth do the Yankees not take the lead there? bases loaded, nobody out and they only get a sac fly and a bloop single? if the Sox did that I'd be frothing at the mouth.
23. Very nice showing from Bates. He doesn't have to mix too many of those in to be useful to us. One of those doubles was absolutely killed and nearly got out.
24. Dang, only got 4 of a kind. Wow what a bomb though.
25. Counting on Bates to go yahtzee here.
