  1. Hardy had a .259 BABIP this year. I think those expecting a rebound season are justified. Of course on the other side of that, Hardy also only hit a line drive in about 13% of contact plays or so. Which is extremely low and suggests that he isn't having bad luck so much as struggling to square up the ball.
  2. Right, because we'd win the head to head by the inferred action of tying the division lead.
  3. Every now and again, Javier says something that really makes sense and makes a poetic brilliance out of his normal idiot savant writing style. This was not one of those times.
  4. And in between those two statements the Tigers have done their level best to choke away their division lead and miss the playoffs entirely. But yeah, that was a misstatement on my part. The rotation really does favor the Tigers. I was stretching that because I wanted to believe that they'll handle the Yankees so we don't have to. Boston-New york playoff series are very bad for my blood pressure. But I really do think that their bullpen is going to have a hard time keeping key Yankees off the boards.
  5. Do you really need me to explain that to you?
  6. There are years when a closer might win it but I don't think this is one. Especially when a major contender is on his own team. We've got a starting pitcher out there whose ERA is hovering just above 2. If Greinke dips BELOW 2, he wins the Cy. No doubt in my mind.
  7. But park factors still don't make a guy walk fewer hitters. That bb/9 is absolutely not park dependent. Incidentally, Jackson's FIP is also well down this year, from 4.8 with Tampa in '07. to 4.2 this year with Detroit. Suggesting that there's luck involved, but not JUST luck, in his performance.
  8. There's definitely more than luck to his performance this year. Even beyond anything park factors are responsible for, Jackson's dropped his bb/9 by a full walk this year. His WHIP` went from 1.5 to 1.2. Park factors don't make a pitcher hit his spots. In fact he was probably "luckier" last year really.
  9. I don't think that's fair. A bad month doesn't erase everything he's done up to that point. I think if you're Tigers brass you still go into October with some faith in Edwin Jackson.
  10. Fixed. And yeah, Verlander or no Verlander the Tigers aren't going to be much of an opponent in the potseason. They could get lucky of course but I can't really see them matching the Yankees.
  11. NL pitcher for a large haul of prospects and probably a large contract extension? Sure, nothing can go wrong there. But seriously, I'd make the deal and take the risk for a talent like Johnson. One thing to bear in mind though, is that Johnson while his young career is off to a nice start, has really only had the one great year, and he's been hurt a few times already. It's not a dealbreaker but it's something to track.
  12. And just a FYI for its own sake.
  13. .748 OPS with the big club this year.
  14. Pretty interesting Cubs-Cardinals game tonight. We just had what could have been a walkoff RBI groundout called back because Matt Holliday interfered with the second baseman in his efforts to turn the double play.
  15. The Mike Jacobs of fast-pitch? The Wily Mo Pena of fast-pitch? The Phil Planteir of fast-pitch?
  16. Wow. that would be incredible. And Papi would be moving on at the perfect time to mix a lot of DH time in for both hitters.
  17. I'm a bit more of a gap hitter. I can actually sting it pretty good but I've never gotten a hang of hitting the ball up. When I was actually in shape I could steal the odd base, but 100 pounds and two sprained ankles later (same ankle) if I tried that I'd hurt myself.
  18. The last time Leonard started a game against us it was the most embarrassing 6 shutout innings I ever watched.
  19. Haven't played anything resembling baseball in years. These day I'm what happens when a guy who's gone to seed keeps going. Stragely enough, when there's a game these days no one really thinks to call the big, heavy, slowfooted, error prone ground ball hitter.
  20. Even funnier is trying to put me at third base. I have the attention span of a gnat. I can usually just about survive first base (barely) but anywhere else on the field, I'm totally doomed. At one point I was woolgathering at the hot corner and the catcher made a snap throw. I reacted just in time -- for the ball to hit me square in the middle of the forehead and ricochet into foul territory. That was not my worst defensive moment.
  21. So when Carnivore picks up this chat and the feds come to arrest us all, what's our alibi?
  22. He's on a nice hot streak. Much Like Nick Green was earlier in the year. Enjoy it while it lasts but never make the mistake of depending on it indefinitely.
  23. What he's saying is, the Twins are a factor. Even the Twins can pony up for the right player. Is that Mauer? We'll find out I guess.
  24. Should warn ya, I'm a rotten shot with a dartgun. Anything to avoid taking the guy headon though.
