1. What exactly are you trying to establish? You're surely not attempting to infer that Alex is the best defensive SS in the league. that would be ridiculous on the face of it. If he's not the best in the league, then SOME shortstops in this league are better defensively than Gonzalez. I have presented evidence that Hardy is one of those shortstops. If you want to dispute that, the onus is on you to provide a basis for your own argument. Even if I did your homework for you, the information I have available to me supports me. If you don't like the way I presented that evidence, you're free to find some evidence of your own and present it in your own way. But you don't gain much credibility by simply ridiculing my evidence without providing any of your own.
2. if defensive metrics are flawd, the human eye surely is as well.
3. It's already covered upthread. JJ hardy's UZR/150 is consistently higher than Alez Gonzalez's. Hardy is a better shortstop than Gonzo both this year and over their careers.
4. Reminder: leaving aside all questions of offense, JJ hardy is better on defense than Alex Gonzalez.
5. I suppose there is that. But since Span is trying to get on ahead of Mauer and is a threat to steal, I would be willing to wager that pitchers aren't exactly lining up to put him on base either.
6. Yeah but if you're talking about OBP on speedy guys, he's a good one to bring up.
7. Granted, but if you're just talking about OBP and speedy guys, he's a good one to bring up.
8. I don't ever declare game in the first, but if you stake Greinke to a lead of 3 runs or greater, I might make an exception.
9. Well RBI's are effective when combined with other bits of information (team OBP, place in the lineup) to highlight a player's ability to convert scoring chances. RBI's are useless as a predictive stat, however, in a loose, general sort of way, they'll tell you that a guy can do SOMETHING right. Much like Runs Scored.
10. But RBI's do that too. Case in point: Mike Lowell's 120 RBI's in 2007 probably added another $3M/year to his contract. (yes I know you were joking, it's just worth bringing up in context)
11. We have a winner.
12. Road batting average.
13. RBI's is not "the worst stat in sports." It's the most overrated. there's a difference.
14. The table will need some work.
Topic|Team|Content Prospect|Yankees|The player in question is made of 150% pure awesomeness. Fear us. Prospect|Sox|He could be good, but this is why he won't be. Signing|Yankees|This is the missing piece. We'll win 160 games, and the umps will screw us out of 2. Signing|Sox|Risky move, overpaid here, they'll regret this. Injury|Yankees|They don't get hurt. Hypothetically, if they did, the recovery will be speedy with no impact to ability. Injury|Sox|Everyone is a ticking time bomb. Once hurt, they'll never heal right. Pending FA|Yankees|He will surely sign with the Yankees, or if not, good riddance to bad rubbish Pending FA|Sox|He will reject any deal with Boston and sign with New York Potential trade|Yankees|The team in question will be glad to turn this guy over to us for middling pieces Potential trade|Sox|Say goodbye to multiple Top 10 prospects
15. J.J. 16. Sorry, I think I have to side with Dr. Doomengloom there. I just don't think we can count on Wake as a regular starting pitcher anymore.
17. Don't cheapen Lowell too much. He had a bad year defensively but he's come off hip surgery well and is doing a good job at the plate. It wouldn't be unfathomable for him to regain enough of his range that the postiioning skills and reflexes he's surviving on now can bring him up to average again. with his above average bat, and the scarcity of really good 3B right now, he could find a starting gig somewhere. That, and he's going to be on the last year of his deal. No big long-term commitment to worry about, that should help his value. I could see a few NL teams expressing interest in Lowell. St. Louis springs to mind. Mark Derosa is their 3B and he's not very good either. Also the Phillies have Pedro Feliz at third base. Great glove, not much of a bat at all. Upgrading to Lowell and using Feliz to take the pressure off Lowell defensively COULD make sense for them.
18. I think Wake's body is finally betraying him for good. I wouldn't count on anything from him from here on out.
19. The consensus here seems to be Hardy for Delcarmen. But with everyone here talking him up it occurs to me that that's probably way too little. Don't think for a minute that the Brewers are blind to Hardy's potential and they'd probably be willing to hold onto Hardy if they don't get a price they like. I think the most we'd have to pay is something like one of Felix Doubront or Delcarmen, and Anthony Rizzo.
20. What about the Rangers? I don't think Julio Borbon is going to be their DH perennially. EDIT: Oh crap, I forgot about their cash situation.
21. Tito: Bay: MDC himself http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090921&content_id=7079730&vkey=news_bos&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos Pretty much exactly what I was hoping I'd hear after his performance last night. Sounds like they're aware of the problem, have an idea what's going wrong and are taking steps to correct rather than overreacting or giving up on the player..
22. Honestly, the Angels value defense and Lowell's range has gone through the floor. If they need to trade for a 3B, I think they'd be more likely to go after Scott Rolen.
