  1. What exactly does that mean anyhow? It just sounds like empty language to me.
  2. I think the big question on Weiland, is bullpen or rotation, and it's gonna come down to secondary pitches. But we know so little about the guy that it's virtually impossible to make a call. I hope he makes Portland out of Spring Training so we can get some people up to Hadlock and get a good look at him.
  3. the peril of two word or one name answers is that it runs the risk of leaving the probable intended target of the message with no fracking idea what you're talking about or why you're mentioning the guy.
  4. http://www.soxprospects.com/players/weiland-kyle.htm Haven't heard much talk about this guy, but he seems to have decent stuff and be on a good track through the minors. You'd think we'd hear more about a guy with his profile, especially a relatively high pick (third round) but with all the talk about Bowden, Tazawa, Pimentel, Doubront, I guess this guy got lost in the works. I haven't even really heard a solid opinion on whether he has major league secondary stuff or whether Soxprospects' prediction that has him starting the year in Portland makes sense.. So who is this guy? What does he really throw, and has anyone seen enough of him to give an opinion on whether we can expect this guy in our bullpen in 2-3 years?
  5. Eliminate the second baseman and go with a 4-3 defense instead of the traditional 3-4?
  6. Hall's pretty easy to forget. We're basically getting paid to have him on our team after all.
  7. Damon's defensive decline would have been a much bigger problem if he'd played here. We had left field occupied, first with Manny, then with Bay, and we couldn't rely on DH. So where do you play him? Keep trotting him out in CF despite his ineptitude there?
  8. Actually they have 5 OF right now, I'm guessing you've forgotten Hermida. but yeah, they need an infielder. Callaspo isn't really a perfect fit either, he's dabbled at SS at the big league level but he isn't very good there -- but he's got every chance of being better than Bill "Hasn't played SS since 2006" Hall, and he's actually a better SS in a SSS (heh) than Felipe Lopez, who has to be the other leading candidate..
  9. That low but persistent muttering about Alberto Callaspo is still out there. If there's any chance he can be had for a decent price we need to go after him, since I think the kid's a Bill Mueller redux. Great contact bat, solid OBP, and enough power at age 26 for me to think there's more to come. And he's looked good at 3B in small sample sizes, which is good since that's definitely where he'd be playing for us. I would give fair value to bring him in, stick him on the bench for 1 year as a heck of a switch hitting utility man, and make him our third baseman for 2011 and beyond. No top 5 prospects of course, but Michael Bowden would almost have to be a player the Royals would be interested in, and so would Felix Doubront.
  10. Drew, Pedroia and IMHO Youkilis (whose speed is pretty underrated), are all faster than Bay, although Bay uses it on the basepaths more than Youks does. For the record, I think a lot of people are putting the cart before the horse. Of COURSE when a longtime player for a team first moves on, the stories that were held back from the media out of respect for the guy are going to start coming out. It's only natural for any medium that holds onto some of those stories to bring out the more relevant ones now that they have no reason to keep them quiet. Personally I think a lot of people who yammer about smear campaigns are looking at that particular phenomenon and mistaking effect for cause.
  11. because we all know it's all about fastball velocity. That's why Kyle Farnsworth and Joel Zumaya are elite closers.
  12. Which is to say, not very hard.
  13. Jacko being Jacko again.
  14. There's some rumors flitting around that the Royals might actually be crazy enough to trade Alberto Callaspo. I'm not sure they have any teeth to them, but if Callaspo's on the block, I'd pick him up as a possible Bill Mueller redux and Adrian Beltre insurance.
  15. And I think you're severely underestimating Boston's willingness to pay for the right talent at the right time.
  16. Teixeira is water under the bridge. I still don't think there's any way we could have possibly made an offer New York wouldn't have beaten by $10M. They had a hole at his position and a ton more money than we ever could have had. Papelbon though we have a legitimate chance to keep.
  17. If you can't see the rather fundamental difference between those two positions, I can't help you.
  18. Really? The Sox don't pay market value for premium talent? Do JD Drew and Josh Beckett know about this? Does Daisuke Matsuzaka? And Theo will probably match, because Papelbon is an irreplaceable talent.
  19. A Little Poem Regarding Computer Spell Checkers... Eye halve a spelling chequer It came with my pea sea It plainly marques four my revue Miss steaks eye kin knot sea. 20. Care to phrase that as a wager?
  21. We must avoid making money at all costs, after all.
  22. Papelbon is a much better pitcher than Huston Street.
  23. With Felipe Lopez still out there and us with possibly a roster spot left I'd go after Lopez. Switch hits, decent contact, usable speed, played SS a lot more recently than Hall, decent Scutaro insurance. Go gettum.
  24. Why choose Paps or Bard when you can have Paps AND Bard? Someone answer plz.
