  3. One more question does occur to me. "Or what?" So Venditte's facing a AA switch hitter next year, he's declaring first, the switch-hitter can respond to that, Venditte switches after the first pitch, the switch-hitter can respond to that, and then if either of them keep the charade up (let's say it's a long at bat and Venditte forgets he's already switched once) ... what happens? Balk? Ejection? Non-pitch and the ump goes out to tell him off and make him throw it from the proper side? Completely at the discretion of the ump?
  4. OK, that rule pretty clearly favors switch hitters and pretty much answers my question.
  5. I forget -- doesn't the AB start only after the hitter climbs into the box for the first time. Could lead to some theatrics at some point as Venditte and the switch-hitter play a game of chicken with each other trying to get each other to commit to a hand first.
  6. Let's hypothetically assume he does. What would be the rules regarding Venditte facing a switch hitter? Basically IMHO it kinda boils down to one question: would a pitcher switching hands while still on the rubber constitute a balk? If it doesn't, then the hitter has to declare his side first and, once he climbs into the box, has to stick with it for at least one pitch. At that point if the switch hitter is smart he'll pick his strongest side and stick with it. Advantage switchhanded pitcher, who can then throw to the switch-hitter from a side he almost never sees -- and could give Venditte and those like him a chance at MLB play as anti-switch-hitting specialists. If it is a balk, then the switchhanded pitcher has to declare which hand he'll throw with before he climbs to the rubber, giving the switch hitter time to pick which side to approach from. Advantage hitter, neutralizing the major advantage of a guy like Venditte since they can always approach him from the weak side.
  7. we'd never see Jacko again.
  8. I could see Ellsbury improving on his OBP numbers, but not by a ton unless he drives the ball better and hits for more power as he fills out. I suspect he'll always be a "decent-to-good OBP, great speed" guy. If he can't improve his D at least a little and play in CF, he's headed for Scott Podsednik territory anyway.
  9. I'd enjoy the humor of the last man standing being Ramon A. Ramirez.
  10. the first 5 spots in the bullpen are pretty set. Paps is the closer, followed by Bard, Oki, RR, and MDC in any order you prefer. I'd say on the whole, that group's gonna be solid no matter what happens with the other two spots, which are probably going to be mostly inning eaters rather than guys who you'd send out there to dominate in a close game. Delcarmen was rough second half of last year, but that was possibly something you could just blame on injury and let go, and I don't think Oki's age is going to start showing just yet. We might have the best bullpen in the division, but even if we don't ours should be an asset rather than a liability. How do you guys think the team's going to address the last two bullpen spots? We gonna let Bowden and Tazawa compete for them, do you see more signings, or are we going to sort it out among Bonser, the other RR, and a few members of the scrub brigade get a look? Also, any dark horses you think have a chance to impress us?
  11. One game MORE than Youkilis.
  12. Really kinda shows the generation gap there IMHO. Youkilis has more OPS (beating Bay in both OBP and Slugging), and Bay has more runs, RBI and homers. Meanwhile there's a surprise contender who should probably be in the conversation, athough slightly (but only slightly) behind the other two.
  13. ... what?
  14. That I'll agree with, but someone our corner IF and DH group sucks bad enough that we need to bring in a high-priced guy from outside the org, the smart money says it's probably Beltre anyway.
  15. No, I wasn't really arguing in Lowell's favor. Would like to see this team invest in a solid 1B at some point in he next 2 years though. Remember, what started this was me saying something in passing about dealing for Adgon.
  16. It went that way when Dipre decided to take a throwaway line of mine and turn it into another thread where he declares his unrequited love for our new third baseman.
  17. No double standard. And no, their skillset is not the same. Mike Lowell's offense rests on the basis of a solid batting average and consistently good contact skills, while Beltre's all or nothing. Trying to pretend that isn't the case is an exercise in denial. If I thought Lowell would actually be healthy, I'd still be protesting the Beltre signing as unnecessary. Since I know he isn't, I perfectly understand and accept the reason for the signing, especially since as I said in my prior post, it's a low-risk deal. But Beltre is still a very volatile player, coming off a bad year and a surgery that might impact his offensive performance this season. He doesn't offer us that much security and could very easily be the next big Fenway bust. I thought we could bring in a solid 1B that would free Youkilis to take over third, I'd do it five times over by now.
  18. I haven't made a secret of the fact that I'm suspicious of Beltre. The low-risk deal he's on makes him palatable, but he's not a player I'd ever want on this team long-term. His offensive skillset is just too volatile, and he's a very slight regression away from being nearly useless.. Doesn't have much to do with the Twins or Orlando Hudson though.
  19. Just continuing a thought that had popped up in another thread.
  20. Well, now we know one place we could send Beltre to if we get Adgon.
  21. Yeah had my head in the NL or something. that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
  22. Span Hudson Mauer Morneau Cuddyer Thome Hardy Tolbert/Punto(/Lowell?)
