  1. Because he's 38 years old and the injury can't be written off just like that. Old players get hurt more often, it's why they can't stick around.
  2. Discarding a player we have multiple years of control over in favor of an aging player with one year left is shortsighted.
  3. I agree -- and so I think a way will be cleared for Kalish to play.
  4. Don't want to give up completely on Lars, but Rizzo is the guy you kinda have to pin your hopes on atm. Right now there's still plenty of room in the minors for both players so it's not really a contest -- having 2 high-potential 1B is a good thing, not a bad thing. But Anderson needs to turn it around -- fast.
  5. If we need a 3B that badly, acquire a 1B and shift Youks over, problem solved.
  6. The only way Lowrie's our starting 3B is if Theo commits to a full rebuild. Not saying he can't do it, but I am saying that we have options that make that a silly one by comparison, especially if we keep at least Ortiz and V-Mart, which is quite doable. Or we could even lose Ortiz and sign Dunn to replace him. All we have to do to make the Lowrie option a joke is pick up a power-hitting 1B and move Youkilis back to his natural position.
  7. If his arm is good enough he's got a chance to be a solid 3B
  8. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=CF&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=571757 Kinda getting overlooked -- with good cause because he's still in A ball -- but Jeremy Hazelbaker is looking pretty danged good. ~.850 OPS and 50 stolen bases is plain impressive. Guy's not on the top 10, but if he keeps this up he's going to get there, especially if he cuts down on the strikeout as he advances. I've got half an eye on this guy.
  9. I can't agree with that because I don't see Ellsbury as a left fielder or Crawford as a CF
  10. No he isn't. He's about to start costing money and only has 3 years of control. Kalish himself is more movable for higher value than Jacoby atm.
  11. And then I sabotage the whole idea by calling for that 1B to be Mike Napoli, a low-contact high strikeout slugger, but oh well, no one's perfect. Ellsbury, CF Crawford, LF Pedroia, 2B Youkilis, 3B Ortiz/Dunn, DH Martinez, C Napoli, 1B Drew, RF Scutaro/Lowrie, SS Kalish Hall (re-signed, I like him and we need a RHH) Lowrie Salty/Wagner (depending on who has a better Spring) That's a lineup that can win. There's some "ifs" to it of course, but it can win.
  12. No way should you sacrifice Ellsbury because of one more year of Drew. If that's the answer, you're asking the wrong question. There's plenty of ways to juggle the roster to have Crawford, Ellsbury, Drew and Kalish all on the same roster, especially if DH is open.
  13. I'd take Markakis out of Kalish. I'd take it and run. But I don't think there's any reason to limit him to that projection. He's highly talented and fundamentally sound in the modern-baseball meaning of the term (meaning he takes walks, makes quality contact, and defends well). I think the sky's the limit. Chase Utley? Torii Hunter? Pre-juice Bonds? Why not?! This kid has all the talent he needs to get there. Course, if he fills out to that point he'll probably move fulltime to right field, but if he fills out he'll be hitting more than enough to justify a corner outfield spot anyway so it's all good..
  14. I wouldn't count Ellsbury out of next year's lineup. I don't think we'd exactly be trading him at the zenith of his value, do you? Unless the price was just about irresistable I suspect Ellsbury will be manning center for the Sox next year -- and since any of Werth, Kalish and Crawford would add a third lefty to the lineup, I think a guy like Cameron makes sense as a 3 position substitute who can and likely will play all 3 positions on a regular basis
  15. Also because as much as Ortiz doesn't suck as a 1B he isn't an elite one and the franchise has made it clear that it regards a high-level defensive 1B as a major franchise priority.
  16. Ortiz isn't that bad at 1B when he plays it. For his career he's a little below average and in years where he gets more reps, he's better. He's not playing it to protect his knees, not because he sucks as a 1B.
  17. I'm interested in Davis. Strikes out way too much, but he definitely has the tools. Potential Ortiz type if he can learn to make contact. Only 24 -- there's time. I'd pick him up and stash him in AAA or on the bench and see what he can do.
  18. I would definitely rather go after Crawford than Werth. Crawford's build is favorable for our short left field wall and our deep right field with room to plug a gap. The only concern is that it'd probably push Pedroia off the #2 hole, and really why is that a concern? Pedroia can hit anywhere.
  19. That's a little shortsighted. There's nothing wrong with bringing older guys in as roleplayers and short term signings, and we really don't have a 1B prospect I'd call up right now and expect adequacy from, so this doesn't do any harm.
  20. He is a horrible defensive 1B at the best of times and he's likely hobbled by a bad hip.
  21. It's worth a shot, I'd rather watch Ortiz play first than Delgado though. Delgado is an awful defensive 1B.
