  1. Yes yes yes, but the fact remains that ELLSBURY IS ON A REHAB ASSIGNMENT. If they thought he was ready to play HE WOULD NOT BE ON A REHAB ASSIGNMENT. Whether or not you think Ellsbury should be in Boston THE PERSON YOU BLAME FOR HIM NOT BEING HERE IS NOT JACOBY ELLSBURY!
  2. It's not about how he performs, he could hit 10 for 10 and if there's a chance that he could reinjure himself in Boston, don't call him up yet. I think we'll see him with the big club in a couple days, but there's a reason they call it a "rehab" assignment, he's not down there for performance reasons so him tearing up Pawtucket is not news to me.
  3. You're reading too much into it. Rib injuries can be nasty and they've misjudged his return once already, they're just playing it safe this time. I don't think there's any pressure to rush Ellsbury back anyway, it's not like we'll make the playoffs with or without him.
  4. Unless you're holding Ellsbury's medical reports in your hand as you say that you're in no position to judge whether or not he should be back. This is a lost year, I have *no* problem letting Ellsbury get back to 100% before putting him back out there. Anything that reduces the likelihood that his ineffectiveness will carry over to next season is all to the good right now.
  5. If the Padres make the playoffs forget about Adgon.
  6. Yeah, he literally stopped a run from happening there.
  7. The WEEI guys are idiots. He's playing in Pawtucket because of Theo's decision, not his own.
  8. It's not about how great Scoot is at SS, it's about how bad Lowrie is at third. Having the best possible SS is important, but so is third base, and Scutaro playing there is worlds better than Jed. Lowrie can get by or better at SS, in fact his SSS UZR/150 from back before the injury was very, very good, and Scutaro can fill the gap at third base way better than Lowrie can.
  9. Whoo! Who's up for a Nava-Kalish-Drew outfield?
  10. He can get by there but he isn't great, infield hits will happen if he's our 3B If we have to have Scutaro and Lowrie both in the field I'd rather play Scutaro at 3B.
  11. Meh, I'd rather not plug up LF if it can be avoided. I want Drew playing there next year to cut down on wear and tear in his last year.
  12. Adam LaRoche is still out there, or we could take a flier on an older prospect like Gaby Sanchez or Kila Ka'aihue. or we could sign Carlos Pena. I'm curious if Fenway could help Brandon Inge's bat too. Maicer Izturis has intrigued me for years too if we'd rather go for a stopgap and wait for Lars.
  13. I've wondered for awhile how Brandon Inge would do with the Monster to aim for. He may be a good gamble to repeat the Beltre Effect, as his game is limited by many of the same factors that hurt Beltre in Seattle.
  14. That's a false dichotomy, so I won't address it. This team has more than enough money coming off the books between Lowell, Beltre, V-Mart, Ortiz, Hall, and a few other incidental contracts that I'm not worried about their ability to improve either the lineup or the pen. Our rotation is set and that's a big plus for the offseason, that tends to be a big worry spot for most teams and it's a worry we just don't have going forward. At least three of Buchholz, Lester, Daisuke, Beckett and Lackey should be effective in any given year and that's what we need. Pick up Dunn and one corner IF bat and we should be good to go.
  15. They didn't bring in Oswalt and sign Howard because ownership's concerned about running out of money, I suspect that if they think it'll put them back in the playoffs there's a number of moves they'll look at.
  16. Not from us. I'm not touching Beltre longterm. He's just here to build his contract value and then he's gone to points west again. Let someone else take on the risk signing this guy to a multiyear deal. Philly's looking like possibly the best candidate there.
  17. I think Jacko's right to a point, but I think if V-Mart agrees to frontload a contract an extra year might not be a sticking point. Basically pay him like an elite offensive catcher while he can still catch, but as he ages and looks likely to move to first, start paying him like a 1B. Dunno if he'd go for it but it is a solution.
  18. But is "a small discount" big enough to cover the difference in value between a guy who another team sees as a full-time catcher and a guy we don't see as a full-time catcher? I think V-Mart's out the door. Someone will overpay for him.
  19. I will always appreciate Mike Lowell for what he did for us. He's a professional, and he's a gamer, and he's exactly the kind of veteran you want on your roster -- at least he was before he played a moth with a hip labrum tear and was never the same since. He still has most of those skills and abilities, he just can't stay on the field long enough to make use of them. I still can't help but wonder if the guy couldn't get his form back at least to an extent and have a couple more decent seasons, but the odds are against it. I think though that we ran into more bad luck with Lowell than you should reasonably expect. As hard as it is to find a decent third basemen, in the same situation I'd extend the same contract again. A Lowell who didn't run into some pretty epic bad luck only a couple months into his deal would have largely justified his salary over the last 3 years.
  20. That's based on the assumption that we can replace anywhere near that level of production for significant savings. The FA RP market is way too volatile to call that a given.
  21. Because we're so poor.
  22. Yeah, someone's going to pay V-Mart to be a catcher and if we think he's a 1B we won't match that. My guess is that at the very least THeo's hedging his bets in case V-Mart isn't back with a strong possibility that he's not going to go to any great lengths to BRING him back.
