  1. And baby makes three. Good for SALTY!!!
  2. Worth noting: Tito didn't pinch hit for the rookie lefthanded power hitter against a lefty and Reddick rewarded his faith. Like I said. Worth noting.
  3. I think this Reddick kid might work out fine. J. D. Who?
  4. I won't go far enough to suggest that Miller was good, but he battled, left in line for the win and I'll take it.
  5. The Impossible Dream team's manager has passed on, per 98.5 Heck of a manager. He will be missed.
  6. ] Back injury, we don't know how long he'll be out yet.
  7. How about that for a save???
  8. This is what happens when an umpire blows a call.
  9. Millar never got more than about 100 starts at first base in a year in Boston. He played at first because he was more athletic and the FO and management have certain prejudices. In terms of being a better actual 1B, Ortiz was probably better. Working around Millar at first was the last time Ortiz played there against American League lineups.
  10. I can. There were a few times back earlier closer to Ortiz's prime before Youk broke out to the point you couldn't take him out of the lineup. It wasn't usual, we all know Tito has his way of doing things and in his mind his DH is his DH, but it did happen. It also happened more than a few times in 2006 when injuries just decimated the squad before we acquired Hinske and Pena.
  11. Pretty much a garden variety 1B then. half the reason we haven't seen Ortiz play more first base is that most of his time here we've had gold glovers, and the other half is to protect his knees as he's let himself get a little big in order to increase his power. If he had an offseason to prepare to do it, he could platoon at 1B even at this point in his career, and if he'd done it all along, he'd probably be someone's starting first baseman right now. Point being, the NL probably shouldn't rule this guy our wholesale when his contract is up. He could be that first bat off the bench who can play in the field on a double switch for any NL team
  12. Anyone who looked at the numbers kinda saw this coming with Lackey. Go look at his lifetime Fenway numbers. Even if you narrow it down to his pre-Red Sox nuimbers it's still very bad. Fenway is not the place he should have come. My sense is that this is a player who needs to go to the National League and get his mojo back. Problem is there aren't a lot of really healthy NL franchises that could eat that kind of contract. Most of the big NL markets are broke, noncontenders, incompetently run, or otherwise not in the running for any kind of SP.
  13. Odd that you say that. I always thought of Papi as a below average but adequate first baseman. He'd never win a Gold Glove, but if he was a NL player he would have played first base a la Prince Fielder and everyone would have just rolled their eyes when the big man muffed a throw to first and argued he didn't do it enough to make up for his value at the dish. He didn't play 1B more in Boston largely because of size and health concerns, not necessarily the glove which I've never seen be a liability on the field when he did play In short the guy's only a "no glove DH" because we can afford to do it here in the AL, not because he couldn't play defense if he had to -- and indeed, when he's had to he's generally proven he knows what to do. That's exactly the kind of DH we'll keep seeing, I can give you one pretty young example, Billy Butler of the Royals.
  14. What the heck do you do with Lackey? Can't trade him, no one would want him. Can't leave him in the bullpen because it doesn't solve the problem -- honestly would you trust this guy even in the bullpen?Releasing him isn't great asset management because he could easily bounce back a year from now and at least give you Barry Zito type production. And if you leave him on the roster he's going to start every day and kill us. So what the heck do you do? My immediate answer is waive and demote, but that's a ton of money to eat.
  15. Maybe we should bring back Coco Crisp. Proven veteran, golden defensively, good numbers v LHP, Ells can play right if he has to. Heck he won a ring with us, and not just won it, was a huge part of how we won it. He's not the superstar we thought we were getting last time but what he is is a good speedy switch hitting roleplayer.
  16. Let's not forget that Navarro can show up in any of the 4 infield positions. If we get Navarro and Lowrie on the same roster and both guys are hitting that's a ridiculous amount of flexibility.
  17. Stumbled across this guy and I'm kinda intrigued by what I'm seeing. minor league #'s This kid is looking real good this year, and at 23, putting up very respectable numbers at AA, is "in range" to be considered an actual prospect As a left field prospect with "average" defense you have to ask if the glove could be a drag on his ability to advance. On the other hand he has done nothing but hit and his plate discipline has looked extremely good this year -- 53 walks to 46 strikeouts is very, very respectable. Oh and he's righthanded. Yeah so that's something to think about.
  18. Will Middlebrooks is having a pretty solid year in Portland, hitting .298/.344/.481 with 8 homers. At 22 he's nice and young, and he could be in range to replace Youkilis if his health deteriorates over the next couple years and he has to DH. Very nice to see him put it together.
  19. I don't think his numbers against minor league righties are that important. Since he's a LHH though I imagine they're pretty good.
  20. Jed Lowrie, probably.
  21. Our offense literally didn't show up. You could build a half decent lineup around the people who are not in the lineup tonight. Crawford, Ellsbury, Lowrie and Ortiz. That's 3 of our middle of the order hitters and our dynamic leadoff guy. A lot of people are going to dismiss this as "excuse making" but come on, the Plan A roster is missing 5 crucial pieces, there's got to be a point beyond which you make allowances for a team that's missing guys.
  22. Like to see any team not struggle with 4 of their starters out of the lineup We need to get some guys back soon. Badly.
