  1. If you want a slump proof lineup good luck. Such a thing is completely and utterly impossible. Good pitching will always beat good hitting. No matter how good the hitting is. You can journey through time and bring up a complete dream team of all the best players in history, and a good pitcher who's on his game will shut them down. There's no getting around that. Besides, Guthrie's not a bad pitcher. It's just his misfortune to be an Oriole.
  2. People need to stop holding up the Philly rotation as some sort of unbeatable boogeyman. It's good, but so is our lineup -- with or without Beltran. It'll come down who our #3 starter is if we do meet them in the playoffs.
  3. Lavarnway closing in on .400. What he is doing in Pawtucket is ridiculous. At what point does he force his way onto the big league roster? It's clear that he isn't challenged where he is.
  4. And if we get that far, it's because the team has dealt with good pitching, so your point is moot.
  5. I can't think of one of those guys I'd swap for Beltran.
  6. I'd part with Federowicz for Beltran if it comes to that. Taking Lavarnway, Salty, and the fact that Varitek is still capable of at least playing backup, we don't really need FedEx so badly, and his brilliant D and adequate bat might intrigue NYM. It's a pretty good balance of a well regarded prospect and a guy we can spare.
  7. http://www.coupondad.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Juicy_Juice_Logo.gif Just saying, one has to at least broach the subject.
  8. It's kinda like ELlsbury in 07. He's a prospect running hot and due for a sophomore slump, but in the meantime there's no reason he can't continue to hit more or less well for the rest of this year
  9. It can go down quite a bit and still be somewhere between equivalent with Beltran, and not so much worse that you sacrifice prospects to replace him.
  10. That is not adequate numbers. This is an adequate catcher. This is another one. And yet one more just to get the idea across. That's your bogstandard breed of journeyman backstop that most of the league gets to put up with on a regular basis. Nothing we've had for more than 16 years has been anywhere near that bad, since Hatteberg broke in. The fact is Boston fans are spoiled. They have no idea what a good catcher looks like because they have no idea what a bad one looks like. All Salty has to be to be well above the cut for his position is this guy. That's a standard even you have to admit that Salty should be able to reach.
  11. The difference between you and me, a700, is that I judge players based on what they are, and you judge them based on what they used to be.
  12. Now who's cherry picking? 4+ ERA in the minors = stay the heck away.
  13. Minimal. Remember, we got him for literally nothing. Other teams see the walks as well. He's too big a risk to trade for until he proves over a long period of time that his command is improved.
  14. Defensively I mean. You know what I'm talking about. He's been far more noticeable defensively than a good shortstop should be. How about a buy low flier on Ian Desmond? The Nationals have Danny Espinosa to replace him. Downside is good defensive ability and speed off the bench, and he could get his consistency back as a hitter as well.
  15. We do need someone who can make the throw from the hole. Also Scutaro is really tailing off quite a bit recently. Season numbers won't reflect that.
  16. Could we get something done with the Angels for Maicer Izturis?
  17. Let's put right field on the shelf. Reddick is the guy there at the moment and deserves a chance to fail. So let's talk shortstop. Scutaro is not adequate and Navarro is too green. Reyes is probably not happening. Good defense at shortstop will cut runs off our pitching. We need to improve there defensively. What's your answer?
  18. If we assume Lowrie, I don't deal for another shortstop. Lowrie isn't great defensively but he's an adequate overall package and can hold us until Iglesias is ready.
