Yes.
The top of the rotation is excellent. Beckett and Lester is an awesome 1-2 punch. As much as I would love Halladay, he isn't a guy we need to get if we're to have any chance to win anything. Depth is where we could use improvement, and since I still really doubt that Ricciardi will actually trade us Halladay for anything less than an obscene package, we should be focusing more on those guys (Doug Davis, Jarrod Washburn).
The lineup is slumping horribly, but when these guys are performing up to par (individually), its a good lineup. Is Jason Bay going to keep on declining and end up with .400 OPS for the month of September? I don't think so. And if our big bats do suck for the rest of the year, we're not winning anything anyway, no matter what we do on the trade front. One player doesn't solve everything. If we trade a boatload of prospects for Gonzalez, and the offense continues to struggle, how would you feel then? Again, there's nothing wrong with some bolstering here and there.
The bullpen is what it is right now. Its talented, but nothing's guaranteed as last night showed.
Yes, we're a contender. We're 1.5 ahead of the Rangers in the wild card, and that's a team I think is destined to fold down the stretch. They haven't been here before, their pitching is still rather limited (albeit a lot better than recent years). Our only real challengers for the WS are the Yankees and Tigers (we dominate the Angels in the playoffs all the time, we're probably in their heads at this point, so I'm not worried about a playoff meeting).
