  1. Dunno. The Yankees just got two good players for three career MiLB-caliber pitchers and a teenager with an attitude issue--maybe there's demand for Van Every? :dunno:
  2. No fault with this analysis, except to caution that the type of free agents can change on little notice (see Gagne, Eric ). I look at the trade and ask, "What did Pittsburgh see in this for them?" Thoughts: 1) They may have found a flaw in Jose Tabata that they believe that they can remedy with coaching. 2) They may see Ohlendorf as the next Gaylord Perry. * 3) They may expect better results from Karsten's off-speed repertoire in the NL. 4) There's been tampering behind the scenes. I can conceive of no other possibilities. My money is on number one...YMMV. :dunno: * Oddly, Gaylord Perry is one of Ohlendorf's top ten PECOTA comparables. Most of the rest are career MiLB players.
  3. Today's scheduled home plate umpire is Deryl Cousins. Cousins has a low SO/BB ratio, 1.69. Hitters are only posting a .264/.335/.403 line with Cousins behind the plate, contrasted to an AL average .265/.333/.411, so something's offsetting that SO/BB ratio. Boston has lost its last five games with Cousins calling balls and strikes by a combined score of 37-11. New York has won three in a row with Cousins behind the plate, and Pettitte has won his last three games called by Cousins. Watch to see if Wakefield is getting the same corners as Pettitte--if he isn't, stand by for a long afternoon.
  4. Both a700 and I said something: we agreed that Pedroia was safe. I pointed out that, unless one used a particular camera angle, he looked to be out; that would explain viewers who hadn't seen NESN footage being upset. Gom, congratulations on the Yankees' close victory last night. The Yankees' win does not confer the mantle of truth upon all of your pronouncements.
  5. I don't mind it at all from Joba--I mind that Marty Foster refuses to do his assigned job when Joba repeatedly throws at Youk.
  6. ...and Marty Foster lies down to permit Joba to throw at Red Sox batters' heads.
  7. Concur. Put Alex Cora in to throw a bat at Joba.
  8. Against Tek? Those two called strikes? I was cursing watching TV, but Pitch f/x showed Marty Foster as correct on both. :dunno:
  9. Interesting. Looked safe on the NESN feed. Are you watching NESN?
  10. 10/5...but Manny would take a trade to guarantee his option(s).
  11. If Big Papi hits this series, Manny may be history.
  12. Joba is a very good pitcher, but he's not without weaknesses. Watch Joba in the second, fifth, and (if he makes it that far) seventh innings tonight. For whatever reason, that's where he's been having trouble. Pitches 26-50 are Boston's best window of opportunity. In nine starts Joba has earned only a 1-1 record. He's started only three road games, and only one AL road game. He pitched in Toronto, losing 5-0, allowing 3 ER in 6.2 IP. In 57 fly balls allowed, Joba has only yielded 3 HR. That's low, and that's luck: he should've yielded six-odd, and that would've substantially jacked up his ERA. Boston is 36-11 at home this season. Josh Beckett is pitching. Boston is 8-2 in Beckett's last 10 home starts.
  13. "Three way tie?" Does that mean a tie three separate times this weekend, after both Boston and Tampa Bay win each of their games? I can't figure out what else you might mean... :dunno:
  14. Click that little bluish arrowhead within the quoted element to trackback. Here's another post from that thread, listing a few older pitchers who've rebounded:
  15. IIRC, Gabe Kapler found anabolic steroids to be the best aid to smooth, temporary transition to managing.
  16. Check the trackback link for much more discussion. I called this possibility (not as a certainty, but well-supported nonetheless) in March.
  17. It's OK by me if Alex Cora accepts that role as soon as we trade, making us some room on the 40-man roster. Cora's fielding range has declined significantly over the past two seasons, and TheKilo has posted how his hitting has tanked. Cora isn't an MLB-caliber player any more. He is a great potential manager.
