  1. That is quite telling. Especially since Shoppach hasnt been one pitcher's binky. Eventually you have to flip the script and go back to what worked. The last time the sox went to the playoffs was in 2009 when Varitek caught 109 games. Since 2009, they have had catchers who are considered defensive butchers and s***** game callers in VMart and Salty. They went away from defense at quite possibly the most important defensive position. And as a catcher, you have the unique job of managing the pace and the pitch type in the game. This means you not only have to field your position, but you have to manage your pitcher's through the game. Also, by 2009, VTek had become a liability on the defensive end because of wear and tear. In 2008, the sox were 3rd in starter's ERA in the AL at 4.02 and 4th in total ERA at 4.01. Since that time, the sox were 7th, 9th, 9th, and 10th in total ERA and thus has corresponded with the sox missing the POs for what will likely be a 3rd straight yr
  2. Salty is a good offensive catcher. He's a butcher behind the dish and is possibly the underlying cause of a lot of the sox pitching problems
  3. I think the player will interest them, but to what degree? If they are gonna move one of their prime time prospects (Profar, Olt) then they are getting a much better player. Even if they move a guy like Feliz or Ogando, they are gonna do it for a much better player. Beckett's numbers this yr are deceiving, and the Rangers are gonna need a guy who can be reliable. He has given innings for the most part, but he has been an absolute abortion of late and his velo is down. He isnt the same pitcher from 2007
  4. Ogando has been in the pen because Feliz beat him out in spring training. Then Feliz went down and they needed another body. Rather than reverse ramp up Ogando, they got a short term fix. I can almost guarantee that you will see Ogando in the rotation next yr
  5. OJ, if Beckett went on waivers, he'd pass without much difficulty, IMO. I highly doubt someone would want the 2 yrs $33 mil left on his deal after the s*** he's thrown together this yr with diminished stuff.
  6. There is no way they move Ogando in a deal like that. Ogando very well may be in their rotation next season with Oswalt on his way out and Lewis likely on his way out as well. And Ogando is better than Beckett. You have to see the writing on the wall here and determine what the sox will need more than anything else. And that is flexibility. Beckett's $16.5 mil for $5 mil of production handcuffs the s*** out of the sox, who want to stay under the $189 mil cap. Getting Beckett completely off the books will help more than paying his full boat and getting a prospect back. If you lose Beckett and Ortiz by this offseason, you could replace Ortiz with Lavarnway and take that $30 mil or so and use about $22 of that per season to get a real ace like Greinke or Hamels.
  7. I wonder if the loss of Lewis makes a Beckett trade to Texas more of a possibility
  8. There will be no inbetween. Either the adrenaline fixes something internally in him and he comes out blazing or he will go down in a spectacular explosion of homeruns and RBI
  9. Actually, I think Selig is catering to the masses who think that the Wild Card should be at some sort of disadvantage. Having the ace out until game 3 is a definite disadvantage
  10. jung, you may be onto something. Our rotation got a lot better last yr with a bunch of duct tape, bubble gum and Martin catching. You get a good defensive catcher and you live with the lost offense. I think the sox might be better off dealing Salty while his value is pretty high, using Shoppach as the starting catcher and transitioning Lavarnway into the backup C role while DHing next yr with Papi moving on.
  11. I wonder if the sox are better off dealing Beckett for cap relief and then going balls to the wall for Greinke. That kid has some ridiculous stuff and should anchor your rotation for years to come. That will allow them to bring Lester along and see if they can fix him. Actually, the first thing the sox need to do is fire McClure. That guy has no history of greatness as a pitching coach and has been at the helm of one of the worst rotational collapses in sox recent memory
  12. Just saw an interesting stat on Ichiro. He has a career high 26.1% line drive percentage and a career low .279BABIP. His career BABIP is .349. He has been incredibly unlucky to this point
  13. The Tigers had to make that move. They are leading the central and have an obvious need at starter. The sox have obvious needs all over the place with multiple starters also needed. They are now falling like a rock, going up against the likes of Texas, NY, and Detroit. This week will determine their fate. If the sox somehow take the next 2 in Texas, and take 2 of 3 from NY then it might be worth a shot at some arms on July 31st. If they lost 4 of the next 5, then it might be time to have a firesale in a short window
  14. That's only if he did suck and should be traded for 50 cents on the dollar like a lot of the players on your team, lol. If we dealt Joba right now, we'd have to do that, but I dont see us moving him
  15. He is hitting .296 away from Safeco, but his game isnt power, so I dont know if that really means anything. Regardless, this is the perfect scenario for him. Be in a lineup where pitchers will have to throw to him playing half his games at a field catered to lefty hitters where a liner to right is a homerun. If he cannot succeed in this scenario, then he is truly done
  16. At worst we get a defensive upgrade and some speed. At best, we get a guy who shows he has one last gasp before retirement. Mitchell will end up starting some games for them, but his future was limited here
  17. Easy enough. EEI is on board with DL'ing him and using Morales in that spot, but do you think Lester should go out there vs the Yankees later this week? BTW, this was supposed to be a poll
  18. The Marlins would be wise to deal Sanchez before reality comes crashing back as he has sucked since June 1. I would hold onto Johnson for dear life right now, though. He has scuffled in return from injury, but his peripherals suggest he should be better. I'd hold him into next yr, see if he returns to the ace form and deal him for way, way more.
  19. His chances of making it to the bigs were as close to zero as could be. It takes some serious cajones to do what he did, but it also takes prime time athletes at the top of their game to play in the big leagues. A kid recovering from a serious brain surgery rendering him with stroke like symptoms does not typically fit into that category. I hope the sox see how hard he worked and are willing to offer him a job in their organization as a coach
  20. Im sure he did. As long as he's able to throw smoke, I don't care
