If he failed the physical, then he'd be back on the market. They arent "failing" physicals here. They are finding potentially chronic problems that arent acute and trying to leverage the player. It's like doing an MRI on any pitcher and seeing some wear and tear of the shoulder and then leveraging that player. Even though every pitcher will have some wear and tear in their shoulder.

If Napoli goes back out into the market and has to sign for less than 3 yrs $39 mil the players union will file a grievance and I am sure there will be a backlash

The method for which the contracts are vetted disallows that kind of contract from being a reality. You cannot stake a contract to anything more than MVP voting, CY voting, milestones, and games played. I do not believe you can give a guy a large incentive for hitting over a certain percentage

I dont doubt that it benefits the team in the short term, but it will make free agents think twice about signing and will definitely make a player ask for more out of the sox in the process. It's a short term gain, long term loss kind of process

They wrote it into the contracts of Lackey and Drew and tried to do the same bully method with Bay. Why wouldnt they continue that with AdGon and Crawford? Because those guys were the flashy signings that allowed them to market their new look team. Nobody gets excited about a fat, injury prone catcher. There is a 0.0% chance of bringing Rizzo back to the sox. He's young, cost controlled and will be a premium offensive talent on an otherwise weak team. He is going to be their building block around which they will arrange others. He's the kind of guy Theo approaches with a team friendly 7 yr deal around mid season and locks the kid up until 2020.

Napoli was brought to Boston because his right handed swing would make Fenway a homer dome. He'd be an annual 30+HR hitter if he stayed healthy in Boston. LaRoche in Boston would be more of a questionmark, especially since LaRoche's career has been a rollercoaster for all intents and purposes and he'd be moving to a field that isnt kind to lefties

Marcum is the kind of guy the sox need provided he can stay healthy. He's proven in the ALE and if the elbow is right, he'll go 200IP for you. He shouldn't come at a huge price, so a 2 yr deal might get it done

Yanks got 12 starts out of Pettitte last yr. 12. That's 1/3 of a season. I am sure we'll get more from him. The guy who started in his spot (Garcia) was the second level of hell bad. Yes, we are losing Soriano, but you're leaving out the return of the best closer in the history of baseball. CC will be healthy in his return. Jeter has already said he won't miss time. We have Youk who should replace the production from Arod in 2012 while getting ARod back at the ASB. We also get Gardner back for the whole yr and have Ichiro for the entire season. The only real argument most have us if Swisher's loss will be tremendously impactful. The Yankees won the division with an injured ARod, CC, Pettitte, Rivera, Gardner, and Joba. And to say a team like TB will upend them even though they just dealt arguably their best pitcher over the last 4 yrs without any known big leaguer returning is hilarious. You have an argument with the Jays and maybe the O's, but it will be another banner yr in the Bronx. After 2013, all bets are off

I like Mustelier a lot. His versatility helps us, but he's not a great defender at either position and there is a question as to whether his bat could carry in the bigs. He's hitting, he's walking, he isnt striking out and he can hit for power. Why the hell not? He's also holding his own in the winter leagues against big league level competition.
