  1. Hughes looked very good tonight. That slider is going to be the key to his success. His fastball tends of flatten out and since he lacks anything with run to it, righties really can sit and rip, which had been his issue. It's very strange that a righty who is prone to the HR in Yankee Stadium can dominate lefties to the degree that he has. Last yr, lefties hit .211/.270/.340 against him with 11 of his 35HR allowed. Righties put up Miguel Cabrera numbers with 24HR in 370AB and a .928OPS. That slider is going to go towards mitigating that circumstance. Unfortunately, he doesnt seem to realize that all the time and gets fastball happy, which gets him into trouble. The AB with Molina is a good example of that, with Jose being owned on sliders then Hughes throws 3 straight heaters with the game tied and a RISP and he gets beat.
  2. They did ital. Game is called
  3. I wouldn't say a shell of his former self. He's slowed down his off speed stuff to accommodate his lost FB velocity. And the pitches he missed with last night weren't pitched anyone would have gotten away with. He did have a terrible first inning, but did manage to go 6 innings of one run ball after it. He has lost weight, a considerable amount. My guess is he wants his back and lower half to last, and at 300lbs, that wasn't likely. He doesn't have the 97mph heat he had as a kid, but that's been gone for awhile. Last yr he was 92mph, this yr he's 89-91mph. I still think he's going to rival his prior season's numbers, but if he keeps losing velo, eventually, it's gonna hurt him. Thus far, through 5 starts, his numbers are damn good
  4. His back is tight again. I know they're annual, but couldnt they have been in August?
  5. Coming into this yr, I was worried about the offense. Now with Youkilis out and the slew of other players out, we're left with an offense where Cervelli is hitting 5th. That's f***ing pathetic
  6. What the f***! It seems that every time I have the chance to watch a game (which is rare) the Yankees suck an egg
  7. Bard is hurt. His mechanics looked a little cleaner in ST, but you dont lose 7-8mph off your velocity without something physical. My guess is they pulled a Joba with him and f***ed up his arm last yr. I bet there is going to be something lurking in that shoulder
  8. Nava is not even in the same galaxy as Hamilton. He is what he is, a short guy with a nice swing who seems to tire with lots of playing time. He's also a guy who is slow to adjust and can be pitched to. Farrell is using him masterfully. You ride him while he's hot and then stash him once his bat cools
  9. What I think benefitted Webster was his use of the FB-changeup combo. They both look not only similar to the hitters, but they look nearly the same to the viewer until you look at the mph. He had a bright future. I also think the ST guns are a little pumped up since he was really sitting 93-94 per the Fenway gun.
  10. WMB was a candidate for regression per a lot of baseball heads because he benefitted from being in the bottom of the order up until the big trade and then was injured when the sox lineup really had holes in it. Now, he is being relied upon to produce, and for a relative free-swinger, there will be adjustments. He is probably going to have a subpar yr by expectations before turning it around after he adjusts part way through the yr. His big breakout yr is coming next season once he really figures it out
  11. They can move him to third next yr and move ARod to DH. Regardless, we've been stuck with them for awhile now and are going to have to be creative. That being said, we're 21 days into the season and I couldn't be more pleased. Our pitching has rounded into form even though Nova really hasn't remembered what won him 16 games two yrs ago. Wells and Hafner have found the fountain of youth. Youk's back started barking, so that's an issue, but he's played like a man on a mission thus far. Tex has had no setbacks for now and is currently on schedule for mid to late May. Granderson is on schedule and will be back in 2 weeks.
  12. Jeter has a crack in his ankle. Out 3 months. This gives Nunez a full 3 months to show whether he belongs. It also makes it likely that Jeter picks up his part of the 2014 option at $7 mil. I just hope Nunez can live up to the hype.
  13. Travis Hafner looks like the old Pronk and Vernon Wells has been able to show some Blue Jay magic. I dont know how much roids they're putting in the Gatorade, but they better keep em flowin
  14. House of cards still standing. Nova was passable and our pen did yeomans work.
  15. Vidal Nuno might be the next guy in line for work if the Yankees need pitching. He's a lefty starter who dominated ST and thus far has been a pretty impressive player in the MiLB career for NY. The Guardians drafted him out of college, he had two lackluster yrs in the minors then got to the Yankees as a FA. They tweaked his mechanics a bit and worked on his arsenal and since then, he's been untouchable. He has a sub 2 per 9 career walk rate and since coming to the Yankee side, he's struck out around a batter an inning. He doesnt throw hard, topping out at 90 and mostly sitting around 88mph, but he can command his fastball impreccably as well as his curve, slider and change. While none are plus pitches, all are at least big league average and can all be spotted on a dime. He has started out 2013 with a 20-1 K-BB ratio with a 1.53ERA and a 0.62WHIP.
  16. Halladay was in that category before his shoulder woes, massive drop in velo and concurrent loss of command
  17. That mix that went to LA just wasnt working in Boston. They started over, got rid of some of the malcontents and revamped with a culture first attitude. It's working through 12 games, mostly because your pitching has been solid
  18. You cant really jump the gun here, though. An ace is someone who has proven durability and effectiveness plus a stopper quality to them. Buch has proven effective in stints and even for an injury shortened season, but he's never really had that 200IP season with 32+ starts. I'd put Strasburg in the same category since he hasnt done that either
  19. I want to see him now.
  20. Once a rookie abandons what worked for them, they're lost. JBJ's approach has always been patience. And in that AB, he was jumpy. Its time to activate Ortiz and send JBJ down
  21. Vernon Wells looks like a man come to life. I dont know if he became disillusioned in Toronto and just gave up in Anaheim, but right now, the guy looks like the old Vernon Wells. If he keeps playing like this, we might have a significant issue when Grandy returns. Also, Travis Hafner is hitting the piss out of the ball too. And it looks like Youk got mad. He wants a big money contract and if he plays like he has, he'll get it.
  22. If something isn't true, I call it out. I wasn't on last night and we won, does that mean I don't support my team? Regardless, this team just needs to stay close, and we've got a shot. That being said, the contingency that I put on the sox contending has come to fruition in the first 2 weeks. Lester and Buchholz have been lights out. If they pitch to their ceilings, they'll be in this thing until the end. If they fade out or get injured, then they're not going to contend. Just like with the Yankees, if CC, Pettitte and Kuroda fade, then we're f***ed
  23. Dude, I just got back from the Bahamas. I watched the Yankees yesterday and they were lackluster mostly due to the fact that they were down out of the gate. This won't be the team of yrs past, where they can get down 3,4,5 runs and come back. Our pitching needs to lead us and yesterday Hughes sucked nuggets. He's a slow starter and after what he did last yr, he's got more rope, but he just doesn't fit on this team long term due to his extreme flyball tendencies. I hope he turns it around for this season and for the draft pick comp at yrs end.
  24. The yankees can pitch more than a little bit. CC may have lost some velo, but he's looked like himself the last two starts. Pettitte has been unhittable. Kuroda should rebound. And Hughes had a solid yr last yr. Going into the offseason, I was worried about the offense. Coming out of the offseason, I was very concerned about the offense. And coming out of ST, I was distraught about the offense. Through 9 games, though, the house of cards is holding up. We don't need it to hold up for the yr, just until Jeter, Grandy and Tex return. In terms of ARod, I hope he falls into a ditch and loses a leg
  25. CC dominated again. Tied for first with this cast of characters, lol
