I think we do deal a pen piece, but I think we deal one for another or we deal one to sign another. The one thing we are light on in the upper minors is LH relievers. We have Shreve on the big league roster, but with him being a FB-split-change guy, he has reverse splits. Chapman is the closer, so he won’t be used as a matchup guy. Aside from them, the highest minor league LH reliever is Tarpley, and he isn’t protected from the Rule V and I anticipate that we lose him. We could use a matchup lefty.
I think you’re spot on in dealing Warren. His stock is at its highest and he’s a FA after 2018. I don’t deal Dellin. His struggles with command will get us pennies on the dollar. I’d rather see if he can find the zone. If he can, he’s a relief ace. If he cannot, he’s a mop-up guy. I’d rather have the relief ace potential be realized here.
I absolutely deal Castro. He has had injury issues and consistency issues. He also showed that he can be handled. Miss with the heat on the inside, and he’ll kill you. Sliders down and away and you’ve got him. Judge showed he could lay off after a while. Castro didn’t. He had a rare .300 BA this past year (only 25 guys hit .300 or better) and he has power from 2b, which is also rare. He should fetch a nice return from a team starved for offense. We have TONS of 2b options internally who could improve on his defense and maybe even the offense when all is said and done.
I do not platoon Bird. His bomb off Miller showed me all I needed to see. He stays in against the toughest lefty in the game. If he’s healthy, he’s in the lineup 150 times in 2018. I’d just like to see him get about 20-50 starts at DH.
A platoon of Headley and Andujar makes sense. Headley was great from the left side. Andujar mashes and he could take more than just platoon reps if Headley slides across the diamond 20-50 times to allow Bird a half game off at DH. The deceiving thing about Andujar is most pundits give him s*** for his lack of walks and label him a free swinger. Castro is a free swinger (low BB, high K), but Andujar is more and early count contact guy with power. He rarely K’s, which means he’s putting the ball in play with authority. We need that. We don’t need a free swinger like Castro. We have enough strikeout guys. I’d rather see Andujar grab onto a spot and see what he can do when he’s striking out 60-70 times a season and making consistent hard contact.
