  1. The Yankees were looking for a young voice who used analytics. I’m sure Boone proved that in the interview. Other than that, not a soul knows if he’ll be any good, so we all have to reserve judgement
  2. Intriguing to say the least
  3. Well hey, he’s fresh out of the game, was a great player, and can really relate with the young Hispanic core and the coming Hispanic prospects as well. Cashman must have loved his leadership while he was here for 2.5 years
  4. So the sox are out of top prospects and view the best of their system akin to the prior top prospects. Sounds like an optics issue.
  5. Read a700s posts above
  6. a700, how is it not supportable? Your core will be up for FA contracts by 2020. You’ll still have Price and Pedroia on the books. The lux tax limits will still be there. You’ve got one year of Kimbrel and Pom and two of Sale as well. Over the next three seasons, you’ll need to re-sign Kimbrel, Sale, Betts, Bogaerts, Bradley, and Pomeranz. It help that Devers and Benintendi will be there, but there’s no “next wave” of prospects coming down the pipe. Your best prospects are years away and are lottery tickets due to their proximity. The deals from your upper levels will create a void of new talent at the same time that your core gets really expensive. Without insane spending (which the upper limits really curb spending) you can’t keep the band together and without the next wave or prospects, you won’t have viable replacements. Without getting lucky, the cliff is coming
  7. I think we do deal a pen piece, but I think we deal one for another or we deal one to sign another. The one thing we are light on in the upper minors is LH relievers. We have Shreve on the big league roster, but with him being a FB-split-change guy, he has reverse splits. Chapman is the closer, so he won’t be used as a matchup guy. Aside from them, the highest minor league LH reliever is Tarpley, and he isn’t protected from the Rule V and I anticipate that we lose him. We could use a matchup lefty. I think you’re spot on in dealing Warren. His stock is at its highest and he’s a FA after 2018. I don’t deal Dellin. His struggles with command will get us pennies on the dollar. I’d rather see if he can find the zone. If he can, he’s a relief ace. If he cannot, he’s a mop-up guy. I’d rather have the relief ace potential be realized here. I absolutely deal Castro. He has had injury issues and consistency issues. He also showed that he can be handled. Miss with the heat on the inside, and he’ll kill you. Sliders down and away and you’ve got him. Judge showed he could lay off after a while. Castro didn’t. He had a rare .300 BA this past year (only 25 guys hit .300 or better) and he has power from 2b, which is also rare. He should fetch a nice return from a team starved for offense. We have TONS of 2b options internally who could improve on his defense and maybe even the offense when all is said and done. I do not platoon Bird. His bomb off Miller showed me all I needed to see. He stays in against the toughest lefty in the game. If he’s healthy, he’s in the lineup 150 times in 2018. I’d just like to see him get about 20-50 starts at DH. A platoon of Headley and Andujar makes sense. Headley was great from the left side. Andujar mashes and he could take more than just platoon reps if Headley slides across the diamond 20-50 times to allow Bird a half game off at DH. The deceiving thing about Andujar is most pundits give him s*** for his lack of walks and label him a free swinger. Castro is a free swinger (low BB, high K), but Andujar is more and early count contact guy with power. He rarely K’s, which means he’s putting the ball in play with authority. We need that. We don’t need a free swinger like Castro. We have enough strikeout guys. I’d rather see Andujar grab onto a spot and see what he can do when he’s striking out 60-70 times a season and making consistent hard contact.
  8. Yankees sent 8 guys to the AFL. 5 ended up in the leagues top 25. (Florial, Sheffield, Abreu, Estrada and Carroll).
  9. In this case, there is no overpaying. If Ohtani signs in NY, the Yankees will shell out $20 mil for posting (not against the lux tax), $3.45 mil to sign him and then they get him at league minimum for 3 seasons before he enters the arbitration process. The arb process isn't guaranteed as a team can non-tender a player. So a team like NYY shells out $25.1 mil to acquire and control him for 3 seasons and during those 3 seasons, the only thing to hit the lux tax is the $550K per year for league minimum. It is an absolute homerun. Whomever he signs with will be very happy no matter the outcome
  10. He could be the platoon option with Hanley. He rakes RHP even better than Duda
  11. Matt Adams on the block. Might be a fall back option if the sox don’t land a big fish. The guy has power, but that’s about it
  12. Ohtani is a stud, and he’ll look great in pinstripes
  13. The 2009 Yankees used only 3 SP’s in the playoffs and all starters went on 3 days rest
  14. Spud, Japanese players are a bit different than Cuban. They have the best nutrition available as well as the best strengthening and workout regimens. These guys aren't stiffs. The Cuban guys are the ones having to deal with substandard situations AND delays in PT due to defection. Theyre a bit more suspect since the time off can really screw them up. In terms of the best Japanese talent, we also need to remember that the shelf like had been short because a lot of these guys are hitting the majors in their late 20s. They adjust, make a name for themselves and then fall off the map. While the perception is that they fade quickly, they are actually fading around the time you would expect (around age 34 or so). Otani is a talent like no other. He can top out at 101 mph. By all accounts had two plus secondary pitches. As a hitter, he has plus power and patience. He has the skills to hit for a high average. He is a rare beast for sure
  15. No you don't. You need 4. There has been only one team since the adoption of the 5 man rotation to win a WS with only 3 starting pitchers, and that was the 2009 Yankees. If you end up with only three at the end, then you roll with it, but if you enter a season with your eyes on three only, then you're hurting yourself
  16. Wedge has to be taken seriously as well due to his solid run in Cleveland. The Yankees are looking at a similar hire to Boston's. Analytical manager who relays well with the players. They also seem to want someone young. Wedge is 49 and Meulens in 50, so they aren't exactly spring chickens but aren't exactly old either. I am surprised Brosius isn't on this list.
  17. Price is the wild card. If he’s not healthy, you’re team is in trouble. If he returns as 2015 David Price, you’ll be solid
  18. You should have seen the week I joined, the first time!
  19. Everyone was waiting for Fister to sign! The roadblock is gone!! /sarcasm
  20. Tillman struggled with his shoulder and when he came back, he was the worst pitcher in the AL. If he gets completely healthy, he’s a really good pitcher. But I think there’s something lurking in that shoulder that might need fixing. Buyer beware
  21. The first free agent signed!!!!! Huge news!!!! Doug Fister signed a 1 yr deal worth $4 mil with the Rangers. It carries a team option for $7 mil for 2019.
  22. Hunter is coming off a great season in which he finally translated his power into K’s. 1.2 WAR for 58IP is hard to do
  23. I still think you're in on Martinez AND Duda. Giving Hanley a regular role all but ensures he will reach that very reachable option
  24. there was a footnote during the ALCS saying that his injury did not require surgery and that he should heal with rehab
  25. And then you need to find another #2 and elite closer
