  1. He was coming off a Lisfranc injury, which can be problematic. He proved he’s beyond that. He’s fully healthy now. Now, he may end up a victim of league tanking, but a team like Cleveland, Chicago WS, and Texas Rangers could absolutely use a big bat added to the middle of their order and aren’t married to a DH. The White Sox are also trying to show their rebuild is over and with Giolito jumping out as an ace, now is the time.
  2. He’s played in 296 games the last two years with a .970 OPS, with 76 HR and 235 RBI. While he’s missed some time with back issues, he’s been as durable as ever. Plenty of teams would line up to pay him. The question is whether he can beat the current deal. If JD opts out, I anticipate he will get a longer deal
  3. That happens a lot in pitchers who have TJS. Montgomery might be more 93-94 next year, who knows
  4. Sanchez and Greinke is a post-prime redemption story if I have ever seen one
  5. He's not going to get the sox below $100 mil, let's be honest. But he is the kind of hire that flies with the Epstein's and the Cherington's of the world. He comes from a system that emphasizes scouting and home grown talent. He is going to make re-energizing the sox farm priority #1. The other thing you guys may enjoy is that TB was built on trades. Everyone thinks they're this home grown great story, but they really aren't. They're a home grown team that gets dealt off for cheap talent that fits better. Look at their roster Nick Anderson-acquired for Rays draftee Ryne Stanek Diego Castillo- IFA signing Yonny Chirinos- IFA signing Oliver Drake- traded for cash considerations Tyler Glasnow- acquired in the Chris Archer deal Brendan McKay- drafted by TB Charlie Morton- signed as a FA for $30 mil Emilio Pagan- acquired in a 3 way deal that sent Profar to the A's Colin Poche- acquired as a PTBNL in the Steven Souza deal Chaz Roe- acquired for cash considerations from ATL Blake Snell- 2nd rounder Ryan Yarbrough- acquired from SEA in the Drew Smyly deal Travis D'Arnaud- acquired from LA for cash considerations Mike Zunino- acquired from SEA in the Mallex Smith deal Willy Adames- acquired from Detroit in the David Price trade Ji-Man Choi- acquired from MIL for Brad Miller Yandy Diaz- acquired in the Edwin Encarnacion/Carlos Santana deal from CLE Matt Duffy- acquired in the Matt Moore deal from SF Brandon Lowe- 3rd rounder Eric Sogard- acquired from TOR for 2 PTNBL Joey Wendle- acquired from the Guardians in a minor league deal for Jonah Heim Avisail Garcia- signed as a FA for 1 yr, $6 mil Kevin Kiermaier- 31st rounder Austin Meadows- acquired from PIT in the Chris Archer deal Tommy Pham- dealt to the Rays from StL for 3 minor league arms 17 of the 25 guys above were dealt to TB. 4 were drafted. 2 were signed as amateur IFAs. 2 were MLB free agents. This guy was a part of a team that knew how to win trades. He is now in Boston to win some to rebuild
  6. Teams need to tender players far sooner than before as well. It used to be December, but I think it is sometime in November this year. The problem in years past was the market was already down by the time the non tenders hit the market, so they wanted them to join the FA frenzy
  7. I do not think JD beats the AAV left on his deal, but I absolutely think he can get more guaranteed money on the contract. He may be looking at what his prospects are after this contract and consider the possibility that he should take anything guaranteed beyond the amount on his deal already. I predicted awhile ago that JD would get a 4yr $75 mil deal on the open market and I think that may be spot on. The question for him is, can he beat 1 yr $12 mil when his Boston contract runs out.
  8. The question is, are there teams out there with cash to burn and a thin farm who would like to get Betts for a year and are willing to eat a bad contract for a player that still has a little value in Price? The Dodgers wont be that team.
  9. Here is the deal with Mookie Betts. Mookie is 27 yrs old and well within his prime. Nobody is saying he won't be great for his last year under contract with the sox. He also is adamant about seeing how much he is worth on the open market. So you aren't going to sign him beyond 2020 before he hits the market. So that point is entirely moot. You are talking about giving a contract to a guy who will be 28 yrs old on opening day of the first season of his new contract. The consensus on here is that most of you guys are willing to back up the Brinks truck and pay Mookie the most money. That will likely be in the 10 year rage at a lower AAV or at a much higher rate for 8 years. Let's look at your comps a little more closely for a 10 year deal. Tim Raines year 28 season had a 6.7 WAR year 29 season had a 3.3 WAR year 30 season had a 3.9WAR year 31 season had a 2.4 WAR year 32 season had a 2.7 WAR year 33 season had a 5.5 WAR year 34 season had a 3.3 WAR The following 3 seasons combined for 4WAR total. That is 31.8WAR over 10 seasons. Only 2 seasons was he All Star caliber (WAR 5+), the rest he was simply good and the final 3 he was replacement level. Would you be willing to spend 10 seasons having him be good for 5, All-Star level for 2 and replacement level for 3? Let's look at others Pudge Rodriguez year 28 season had a 6.8 WAR year 29 season had a 4.7 WAR year 30 season had a 5.0 WAR year 31 season had a 3.3 WAR year 32 season had a 4.5 WAR year 33 season had a 4.7 WAR year 34 season had a 3.2 WAR The next 3 seasons, he had 5.2WAR total. Pudge held up well to the test of time. Pudge also played during the juiced ball era and was rumored to be doing roids. He also played a position where being shorter may have given him advantages as he was in a squat all day long. He is not as good a comparison as Raines was as Raines was also an OFer relying on speed Kirby Puckett 7.1 in his first year. 4.7, 2.4, 3.8, 5.9. Half his contract was good. Defense fell off a cliff thereafter than his career ended with glaucoma. 6.4 total his last 3 years and then retirement. Morgan was a much different era. Pedroia is the cautionary tale. The injury bug creeping in is where you lose the value. What you expect from a 10 yr deal with Betts is 28-32 he is prime, maybe has one bad season mixed in due to injury or an off year. 32-34 he can be a good player, 3 WAR ish as the speed fades. 35 he is a replacement level defender who can slug.
  10. This is actually bad news for us Yankee fans. This means they're gonna build it right
  11. It’s a guy who is coming from quite possibly the best low budget, farm based, value driven team there is. Value guys are going to see that the Sox are upside down and kinda stuck with their salaries the way they are. Maybe I’m generalizing because he’s leaving a low rent place, but his training would suggest he’s going to be far more conservative in his approach to spending. I would anticipate a complete overhaul on the farm side with Bloom taking guys in the TB org and elevating them to farm directors and minor league coordinators to grow their talent. He won’t entirely disregard the minor league scouting side like DD seemed to. I think you were staring at a rebuild regardless. This move almost clinches it for me
  12. This would be a great hire if there’s no Lucchino type hanging over him. Hiring him, IMO, would be a signal of a tear down. But the build up would be pretty significant
  13. It’s training vs experience. The training now for more every job is better than it was 30-40 years ago. The ease of use of technology is far greater in the newer generation than in the older. It’s the way of the world. But the experience is something you cannot teach in a course, it must be learned over time.
  14. Sanchez is just so damn frustrating. He is like the JBJ plus offensively. Is absolutely dominant for a month or two then is ice cold for the other 4 months. His final numbers are always good, but his 1+OPS months seem to outweight his .650OPS months in the counting stats. Also, by season's end, his bat is slow and toast
  15. This likely shifts Tauchman into a FT role in CF. Stanton in LF with Frazier and Judge in RF. Gardner is just falling into our hands again. Looks like we may need him
  16. Seriously, the injury bug is just hammering us into next season, lol. FML. So be it. He was recommended to get it in August, but wasn't willing to do it if he could gut it out for the POs. He single handedly won game 5 vs Verlander, so it isn't like we didn't need him. So be it. See you in June!
  17. Unless we found a taker for Stanton. I don't want us adding to the offense without some financial subtraction. I wouldn't mind changing it up a little bit to be a bit more difficult for RH power pitchers. The last 3 seasons we have gone to the postseason, it has been the RH power pitchers that eat our lunch. This year, it was Verlander game 2 and Cole game 3. The year before it was Porcello (who seemed to have bumped his velo in the POs last year) and Eovaldi. The year before it was Morton, McCullers and Verlander. I get that the Astros guys are pretty good and the sox guys fell off, but it is almost as if Cashman built a team specifically to beat the red sox lefties and didn't account for the right handers elsewhere in the league. Specifically, I would look to move Voit and try to get more left handed. This would push Ford into the starting lineup and if he doesn't cut it, move Andujar there. The lefty OFer would be able to add to Tauchman and Hicks to provide coverage vs RH power pitchers. Judge still plays, Stanton might get squeezed a bit in that scenario, but so be it. The option to flex to a lefty lineup vs power righties and then flex to a righty lineup vs lefties would be very important. Cashman keeps adding offense, but he doesn't add the offense that beats our kryptonite. Time to try
  18. I am not, or at least not some sort of technological advance. Maybe the catcher gets 4 challenges per game and the offensive of each team get 4 challenges per game. AA has shown its immediate in terms of return. Pitcher challenges, umpire gives the call. 3 seconds to challenge the pitch
  19. Happ was a reliever in the postseason. Listen, Happ is gonna be 37 yrs old and has a contract that behooves us to not play him. Montgomery is younger, cheaper and under control for longer. He gets every chance to take the 5 spot. Happ would have to be more than better than JMont to take that spot, and that is assuming Happ is even on the team. There is a chance Happ is dealt this offseason with money going with him. We don't need a below average old man long reliever at $17 mil
  20. That's the thing, if the sox stay over the threshold, their QO is essentially worthless. This is why we will not be extending a QO to Didi. If we had the shot at a #30-38 pick, heck yeah, make the offer. But the idea that we could be paying $17 mil for a guy we may not want with the upside being we get a 4th round pick doesn't really make much sense
  21. Just what you read. Throws smoke. The low number tells me he wasn't a top INTL name, but anyone who can chuck it 98 at that age had promise
  22. Harmony, you keep pushing this narrative and while the overall record backs you up, it’s entirely due to the presence of Baltimore. Also, the ALE had three teams over .500 while the ALW only had two. After the break, the ALW was a two dog race with Texas and ANA freefalling like nobody’s business
  23. I think Hembree is 100% getting non tendered. He suffered an elbow injury and when he returned, he lost a lot of stuff. Tells me he has something in there that is serious and if I am the sox GM, I am not paying him to rehab
