  1. Cole was also in the dreaded Pittsburgh system, the system that preaches sinkers and contact. Cole got to a power system in Houston and never looked back. The risk is there. Price’s performance fell off the map once he signed in Boston. He was serviceable in his first year, but arm issues and velocity loss have caused him to become a middle tier pitcher. Nobody could have predicted Price’s demise just as nobody could predict Cole’s. Maybe it happens in 2020, or maybe he’s the next Verlander who pitches into his late 30s as an ace. Who knows
  2. I honestly don’t think the Dodgers are gonna be in on this. They’re a big money spender, but their rotation is pretty solid at the top and they’ve got their own financial concerns coming due. The Angels are going to be the biggest competition here, but I wonder if they bring in the biggest fish again a la Pujols. That being said, there’s literally no reason the Yanks shouldn’t go for broke on this one. We’re at the line, so as long as the bidding doesn’t go past $40 mil, then there’s no penalty outside of cash. We are likely to swing a deal to send off Happ after this move, which will likely see us save about $10 mil off his contract, allowing us the space to re-sign Gardner, which Cashman is wont to do.
  3. I do think it goes higher, but not much higher. This is the largest contract ever for a pitcher in both AAV and total value. And on total value, it ain’t close. This is quite an opening salvo and making it public was likely leaked from the Yankee side to prove to the fans that they’re willing to go the extra mile to win.
  4. It’s harder when you’re good. The Yanks have had a pretty big advantage in the IFA realm for years as we were the first major power in the DR, which is where I’m looking at. Going through the draft is really hard when you’re hit with the financial burden of the back end. That being said, baseball significantly suppressed mediocre teams. Starting out with zero farm, no money and a mediocre squad is a horrible way to build a farm. Also I’m not looking to rebuild a club in Ny . I’m now looking to sustain one, big difference. A great team needs a farm to fill the gaps. A rebuilding team is looking for a new core.
  5. “My guy” Paxton is on a 1 year deal at about 1/3 the AAV of Price. Also, comparing the two is just stupid and you’re better than that. Price is on an untradeable contract, is 34 years old and is coming off wrist surgery on his throwing wrist. Paxton is on a one year contract, is 3 years younger and has outperformed Price the last 3 seasons. Price has averaged about 2WAR the last 3 years. Paxton has averaged nearly 4WAR per over the same span
  6. If we keep our farm churning out talent, then we can weather any storm. I’d rather use our wallets than our farm to acquire talent
  7. If Price was a Yankee, I’d understand that we are stuck with him. The first time he shows anything positive, I put out feelers and would be willing to eat up to half the contract
  8. Cano was dealt because the Mets were involved and had a rookie GM. The Mets are being sold, so let’s see if they throw money around. Also, Cano was coming off a good, albeit PED shortened, season. 3 WAR in 80 games. Pretty solid and clearly the Mets expected something from him rather than using their financial wealth to absorb the hit. As for Preller, yes, he’s added some salary to help his squad, but why would he add $30 mil guaranteed and get limited return? If he’s going to spend $30 mil, he’d be better served breaking it up
  9. He’s 29 without big injury history. A deal like this is one you hope for 3-4 years of top level performance
  10. I bet you’re the kind of troll who is going to hide if the yanks win a World Series, aren’t you?
  11. If we decimate our farm in the next 3-4 years, then I’ll agree with you on a cliff. It’s a two step process. Sell the farm. Spend all the money. We are heading towards the latter, mostly because Cash has been reticent to do the former
  12. Makes limited sense for Porcello. If I were him, I’d go to the Mets or SD and get away from small parks.
  13. 2013 was ripe for the picking and the Sox were unbelievably lucky. The only powerhouse was Detroit (made by DD) and they folded under the bright lights. Right now you’ve got a dropping but still formidable Houston team and you have quite possibly the best team in the AL in your division, especially if the Yanks get Cole. You’re going to have trouble having to play NY and TB 38 times in the regular season. Toronto will be scrappy. Baltimore will suck, so that helps. When the yanks started to get too expensive with guys being paid for past performance, we did have one “last gasp” season in 2015 where we made the WC game. Maybe this is the last gasp season? Really, it took from 2013-2016 to build another title contender. We had a bad farm and were over budget with long term deals. We then compounded it by signing Ellsburg and getting nothing out of it, but so be it
  14. You’ll eat those words and I’ll ensure I torture you with them. No Yankee move over the past 3 seasons has been a “we are the top dog” move like the Sox has with Sale and the Astros made with Verlander, Cole and Greinke. Getting Cole for the Yanks is that move. Cashman will put a target on his back with this move and he will welcome it. It’s time
  15. This is what bringing in a finisher does to your squad. DD finished the mission. I do believe I told you guys when he was hired that he is gonna open a window and generate a cliff. Nobody believed me, but here we are. DD decimates a farm system and fills your squad up with high cost contracts far beyond peak performance. But for a short time, he makes your team the most talented squad in baseball. He wasn’t allowed to have the hug contracts in Miami, but his big market experience in Detroit showed what he was gonna do in Boston and he repeated it. So is it sad that you’re in the cliff phase? Not at all. 2018 will fly forever, and heck, the Sox beat the Houston cheaters on their way to the WS title. DD was worth it, but now you’re paying the piper. You don’t “short recover” from a DD cliff. Look at Detroit. He demolished their farm to such a degree that their rebuild looks like total horseshit and they really don’t have any good major league talent even 5 years after his departure. I don’t think Henry will allow that and This is exactly why the Sox hired Bloom. Bloom is the kind of guy who can win trades of a yesteryear club and also build a good farm through traditional drafting and IFA signings. But with your money on the books and the typical maturation time needed to create top prospects from draft picks, you’re gonna need to give him 3 years.
  16. DHern cannot find the plate enough to start in the majors. His wildness is probably a bit scary for the batters in a one inning performance and he can use that to his advantage. But for 100 pitches he’ll only give the Sox 3-4 innings. Not worth it
  17. I’m getting some good laughs here reading this thread. The white Sox aren’t dealing their prized pitcher in Kopech for a year of control of a 33 yr old DH. Not happening. Chavis and Duran don’t sweeten the pot enough. Choi’s bat has been perfectly fine. Last two seasons, .800+ OPS and OBP’s over .370. Heck, the 37 yr old also stole 15 bases last year. He’s not trash, but he’s also a DH right now. No reason for the Sox to go after him The Price for Myers idea is fine for the Sox, but what does it do for SD who are trying to shed payroll to make a run at Strasburg (SD State alum)? Listen, Price is untradeable without the Sox eating an exorbitant amount of money. With his injury issues 2 of the last 3 years, his sparkling personality and worsening production when on the field, you’re not offloading his contract without doing something dumb. The best way to slip under the budget is to deal off JBJ for prospects and deal off Betts for at least one major leaguer who can fill one of the holes in the big league club. That’ll then allow the Sox about $33 mil to spend to fill the other holes
  18. That’s be very Yankee like
  19. Cole is the best pitcher in baseball. I don’t give a s*** about the CY voting this year, Cole outpitched Verlander. He’s young, he’s built like a horse. He’s got good command and a powerful arsenal. He’s gonna get a 7-8 year deal. If the yanks do nab him, the hope is he’s great for the first 4 years. If he can transition to a back end guy after four years, then great. I’ve been all about “windows” and for the most part, windows are created when you sell your farm system. That being said, we aren’t brimming with upper level talent outside of some pitchers, so if we continue with this young core, we’ve got three years or so to take one of these titles him before we have to make some tough choices. Now is the time. Getting Cole weakens the Astros who are a year away from being devastated by FA. The Sox are in a down phase. The Twins are the twins. The A’s fold in the POs. The AL is wide open for the taking. Go take it
  20. On talent alone, your core is fine. The problem is, you have no money to spend. Sale, Price and Eovaldi are making $77 mil between them. Sale is an injury and effectiveness question, Price even more so, Eovaldi more so than him. You have a team right now that is already over the LT, which is a stated goal to get below. We are all expecting JBJ to get dealt. Right now the sox have holes at 2b, 1b, SP, and Closer/Relief ace. If JBJ goes to get under the lux tax, CF will be a need. Subtracting Betts doesn't help this equation either. Your farm has some guys who can help out in the 1b and 2b situation, but none are gonna shock the world, or at least none are expected to. Your staff the way it is really needs more like 6 or 7 starters and beyond your top 4, all other internal options suck ass. To prop this core up will take cash or prospects. The farm is dead right now. The FO has pulled the cash.
  21. Timing is everything. You've got a ton of money tied up for the next 3 seasons with only two players who may outperform the contract (JDM and XB). The Yanks are coming into their window and with a ton of money coming off the books after 2020, they can sustain the window a bit longer. If I were Bloom, I would be looking to try and beat the Yanks with a younger core once the Yanks core starts getting huge money (2023) and have to make some pretty rough decisions. The Yanks handled a ridiculous amount of injuries and still overwhelmed the sox by 19 games. If the Yanks were trying in September, it could have been 22+. Now the Yanks are healthy and poised to add a legit ace in front of a pretty talented rotation. They return their dominant pen. They return a healthier offense. The sox would need to hope for another year of unprecedented bad luck for the Yanks and a year of ridiculous luck for the sox to overtake us, and being a cheerleader isn't a good business strategy.
  22. The Sox cannot go into the season with the same ramshackle pen if the goal is to win. You cannot expect Workman to replicate last year and the other dogs don’t hunt out there. That was immeasurably difficult on a rotation. It’s counterintuitive. If you’re the starter and you know the gas cans are being added to the fire in the late innings, you try to be more fine and perfect, leading to your exit sooner in the game due to pitch count. A good pen is the best friend of a starting staff. A bad starting staff is a terrible friend to a good pen as it burns them out.
  23. Lol, for a troll, you do amuse me.
  24. Cash has been given the go ahead to offer a record contract to Cole. Go reel in that big fish, find a taker for Happ and keep an eye out on the trade market and call it an offseason
  25. Trade Price and not eat too much money, lol. You’re funny
