Every single team is now flush with cash which makes the players very happy. There is labor piece as well and a system that essentially rewards big spending teams. The market has readjusted for good and you may see the 2nd 20-25 mil a yr player next offseason. Right now, if Matsuzaka was on the open market he would get anywhere from a 6-10 year deal worth anything from 14-19 mil per. He should not and will not accept anything that will lock him up for 6 yrs unless Theo decides to reach those heights. Think about it. If he goes back to Japan, he could be a FA in 2 yrs at 28 and still make that money. If he accepts the pile of s*** the sox are offering now then he will be 32 before he hits the market again and will have had 6 yrs of valued performance under his belt. If the sox get him for 6 yrs at 10mil per, and he could have landed a 10 yr deal at 16 mil per in 2 yrs, then he still would lose 4 mil over those 6 yrs. Then, he would likely not have the 16 mil deal continuing for 6 more yrs, rather, he would likely get a 4 year deal worth a little less because he is a small framed power pitcher who is going to be speculated to break down earlier.
