    I just watched the tape of the game (using a ton of FF through our offense), and that isnt true at all. In the first inning, Eckstein reached on an error, Stewart tapped a 9 bounce hopper between lead foot at first and Hollywood. And Rios broke his bat looping one over Cano. Inning 2, Hill hits another looper over Cano and Overbay walked on 2 questionable ball calls (looks like Moose was getting squeezed hard). The first real solid contact came after Rios walked on a questionable 2-2 pitch and Wells creamed the homer. To be honest with you, while it wasnt ace performance, he wasnt getting hit hard at all. Bleeders, dunkers and 2 walks on borderline calls. What I did not see from Moose was his 4 seamer. All of his FBs were 2 seamers sitting 85-87 with some nice movement. He also seems to have sped up his curveballs, which is interesting. He only threw the big, loopy 70mph curve a few times. Mostly sliders or 80 mph slurves.

    Couple things... 1. Lester showed after the 3rd inning that throwing strikes is a good thing. Through 58 pitches, he was 29 balls, 29 strikes with 2 hits and 3 walks before he recorded an out in the 4th inning. After the walk to Sweeney to lead off the 4th, he threw 24 strikes and 10 balls. If he throws like he did in his last 3.2IP then he'll be an asset. The fact that he got through the early going unscathed points towards the other team (and their penchant to hit into DPs) more than it does to him. 2. The sox need to play Coco. They convinced Kielty to stay on in the minors by telling him that Coco would be dealt. Coco has already tried to force his way out of town. The only way to keep this guy's value up is to see if he can play. Benching him then trying to trade him is a nice way to decrease his value.

    Anyone notice a trend when Vtek gets hurt? Sox tank. I never knew a mediocre offensive catcher had THAT much impact on the lineup. I dont know what it is. If the quality of the backup is the issue, then maybe the pitchers in 06 and 02? arent as confident or were shaky without him there? I dunno. But for right now, a catcher that can receive well and give you .250 with 15HR and a good OBP is a solid offensive contributor. Dont overlook that.

    I just dont get this A's team. They are built on the moneyball precedent of high OBP. They have Lester on the ropes. 3 walks in 4 innings and Lester has thrown the exact same amount of balls as strikes (29 apiece). Yet they continually get into good counts and then put bad swings on the ball. Makes no sense.

    3 more walks in 3IP for Lester. Oakland cant hit for s***, but this kid just doesnt locate.

    I was just glad to see that Wang wasnt "ruined" like some had speculated. One bad postseason does not a bad pitcher make.

    6 hits 2 walks in 7 innings against a good (not full though) lineup. Not bad. 2 of those hits were infield hits.

    Plus, Giambi is in a contract yr, so I'd expect him to perform well.

    I get your point a700. But the lineup is loaded. You could predict accurately the majority of the yankee lineup and be damn close e/c for Giambi and Melky. Damon- .280/.360/.440 Jeter- .320/.390/.450 Abreu- .290/.390/.450 Rodriguez- .300/.410/.630 Giambi- ??? Cano- .320/.360/.480 Posada- .280/.380/.480 Matsui- .290/.370/.480 Cabrera- ??? When you are talking about 7 hitters in this lineup that are this consistent, one guy with massive power who is inconsistent and an up and coming CFer with good skills who hasnt put it together for 6 months yet, then you have one hell of a lineup. No matter how you put it, someone has to bat 8th.

    Cano hasnt backed it up on the field? Have you watched? He's a .314 career hitter with a near .500 Slugging percentage. He has shown power (16HRs per yr for 3 yrs prior to age 25) and good D. The only thing he doesnt do is walk. Going by the fact that most 22-24yr olds get BETTER as they get older, I'd assume that a kid who has put up better #s than Jeter had by his age should be given a bit of a benefit of the doubt here. Plus, he's already had a .340 season. What else do you want? He's been terrific.

    We'll have to see how Buchholz fares. I havent seen him throw this ST so I cannot comment on how his stuff is. My guess is that he was working on things as it is ST. Regardless, your worst pitcher is Lester. He'd be my guess to go down when it is all said and done.

    thats a good point, didnt think about that Regardless, Matsui's power has been down in ST and he should move up if the power returns.

    THe back 2 are locked down with Joba and Rivera. We have 2 serviceable relievers in Hawkins and Farnsworth. At worst, on paper this is a serviceable pen. How good it becomes will depend on the young guys around this core. And, if any of the older guys (Hawk or Farns) suck, they are on 1 yr deals and are easily expendable. We have a lot of young depth in the pen. And a good amount of it is high quality. The task is to determine which ones work out without causing too much damage.

    I thought the lineup was stupid as well. But then I looked at it a little closer and it could work out. It is all about balance in more ways than one. First, the handedness of the player L, R, L, R, L, L, S, L, S Then, the speed of the runners. Last yr, Torre stacked slow players when our lineup has a good amount of guys who can run. Damon, Jeter, Abreu, Arod, and Melky are basestealers and have good speed. Cano isnt a base stealer, but he has good speed. Matsui has average speed and our catcher and 1b are atrociously slow. Splitting up Posada and Giambi is the big thing here IMO. Something that Torre didnt like to do. When those two guys got in in succession, it was akin to the bases being massively constipated. Then you gotta go with the hot hand. Cano and Giambi are raking right now. Matsui did well in his limited ST time as well, but the power was missing for the most part.

    Nardi may have been a poor pitching coach with the white sox, but he is a solid developer of young pitchers. The work he has done with Hughes, Kennedy, Joba and the dominican kids is spectacular.

    but as a 14th rounder, are you saying that the sox should just toss a mil at every player they draft from rounds 1-20?

    At the time, Pedro Alvarez was a nice HS prospect with a bright future. The sox had no idea he'd blossom into the player he is today. He is a dynamite player. As I have been told by one of the PP guys, MLB teams set a max that they will go on a drafted player and since there are so many to sign, they typically dont exceed it.
