there are a lot of examples of guys who broke down or reverted to mediocrity during their team control yrs. Youkilis, Pedroia and Lester were coming off career seasons, and there were real questions as to whether they could replicate their 08 performances

Yep. If Youkilis hurt a shoulder and had a couple mediocre yrs, he wouldnt be worth 10 mil a yr. If Bay injures a shoulder right now and misses the rest of the yr, he's still gonna make a shitton of money this offseason

he is apparently their CFer of the future. Never understood it, apparently he has sick tools. But he hasnt really dominated any one level. He was good this yr in AAA, but he is really young (20) and probably needs more time in AAA

the guys who signed for cheap with the sox all had a pretty long time until free agency. So they took the guaranteed money rather than gambling. Bay doesnt have anything to gamble. It is stupid for him to negotiate and take a discount
