Everyone, and I mean every sox fan on this board had something bad to say about one of the yankees transactions this offseason. Well, for one yr anyway, the offseason prior to the 2009 season looks like solid gold.
Starting with Teixeira. The 29 yr old switch hitting 1b was dynamite and performed well enough to be an MVP candidate. His line was impressive. .292 39HR 122RBI with an OBP of .383 and a SLG of .565. He surpassed his career OPS in year 1 while also playing flawless defense. He could be en route to his first gold glove as a yankee. He signed an 8 yr 180 mil contract in the offseason, averaging out at $22.5 million this season
CC Sabathia. There were plenty of things said of CC when he came here. He's too fat, he will break down, he cant handle the pressure, he sucks in the postseason. Well, he proven them all wrong in yr 1, and is a Cy Young candidate after his first season in NY. His line. 19-8 3.37ERA 1.15WHIP 230IP 197K. And to top that, he has started Game 1 of both the ALDS and the ALCS and has combined to throw 14.2IP 2ER and get 2 victories. His salary for this season was $23 million.
AJ Burnett. There was a lot said about him as well. He's too wild, he wont stay healthy, he will wilt under the pressure. Well, the former was true as he was in the top 5 in walks allowed. But he started 33 times this yr, and broke 200IP for the second yr in a row. Here is his line. 13-9 4.04ERA 1.40WHIP. 195K in 207IP. The walks were a problem, but the BAA was down and his ERA was right about where it was the yr before. Knowing his history, he was everything we could ask for sans a 6 start stretch in August-early Sept. And his playoff performance thus far is nice too. 2 games, 12.1IP 3ER and two games that NY eventually won late. His salary for this season was $16.5 million
Nick Swisher. Obtained for Wilson Betemit, Jhonny Nunez, and Jeff Marquez prior to the season. Swish was coming off a career worst season in 2008. His BA slipped under .220 and his HR total dipped below 20 for the first time in awhile. But Swisher turned out to be the emotional catalyst for the team as well as the 3rd leading HR hitter. Although the BA was still low (.249), he set a new career high in OPS at .869 and was 7th in the game in P/PA. His salary this season was $7 million.
The overall cost of these 4 players was Wilson Betemit, Jeff Marquez, Jhonny Nunez, NYY first round pick, NYY second round pick, NYY 3rd round pick and $69 million. The overall production was immense for this team and could be what puts them over the hump this yr.
Needless to say, Cashman's moves paid off pretty huge this yr. It did cost a ton of money, but it has returned this team to one of the elites and has set them up for the long term. I know you love to bash Cashman, Gom, but these moves are the reason why we are sitting where we are on October 19th.
