Mike Lowell is the worst defensive third baseman in the game this season. Please let that sink in. The worst defensive third baseman in the game. I'm glad Theo made this move instead of listening to the armchair scouts who have said "He looks better lately" or "his mobility is coming back". His range is all but gone, unless the ball is hit right to him he doesn't make the play. It is a much better defensive alignment to have Youk at 3rd and Kotchman at 1st in late game situations.

Because Lowell needs days off with his balky hip and I don't think you throw Martinez into catching his first game here. Sit Varitek Sunday during the day game.

OK, how far back should I go? Should I expect him to replicate his .276/.329/.403/.732 line from last year? I think we should disregard the NL numbers since the pitching is superior in the AL, and his Boston line was .226/.286/.345/.631 Not too different from this year's lines. Not buying Kotsay as an upgrade to what we currently have.

But you also have to make the case that every one of the 120+ outfielders is better than Chris Duncan. Also, if Drew is hurt for a prolonged period of time, the Sox can go get one of these prized 120 outfielders on a waiver wire deal, much like they did with Kotsay last season and Hinske in 2006. But how about waiting to make sure Drew's injury isn't that serious first?

Yup, and he wouldn't have the awesome OF defense that is Ichiro and Franklin Gutierrez (who just might be the best CF in baseball right now).

Neither will I. But gone are the days I cheer for David Ortiz, the player. I think it's also unfair to assume everybody juiced. I would say it's probably more of a 50/50 or 60/40 split. There's players out there who never used, of this I am certain. Which makes the news about Ortiz even more disappointing. He needs to come clean and admit his mistakes. -
