It's very, very easy to say "we don't give a f***" or "we're tired of the whole steroid mess". You weren't around here when the Pettitte story broke but I didn't hear anybody say "I'm tired of this mess" at that point. I didn't hear it during the ARod saga, and it can't just be because ARod is unlikeable. I find it to be hypocritical to hear Sox fans say they don't care about steroids now that one of their own has been implicated. And for those who deem themselves baseball purists, ARod garnered a certain measure of respect before January's news hit. He was the guy who was supposed to validate the records, not Pujols. Whether you like ARod or not he's guilty of the same infraction Ortiz is. In my mind, they're equals. Just because one guy is a metrosexual who bangs Madonna and the other is a guy with a goofy smile who loves mango salsa, is irrelevant. We mocked ARod for being fake, creating a persona that is not a real person. What is Big Papi, then? The only difference between ARod and Ortiz is the jersey.

I mean, you're really pining for Mark Kotsay? .257/.291/.324./615 in 79 PA for the Sox this season? Terrible. I'll bet dollars to donuts Reddick can match that line now.

That's of course dependent on McGowan and Marcum recovering 100% for their injuries next year.

Just got caught up on reading this thread, only because I am so tired of this talk that I wanted to get through the trade deadline first. There aren't any words to describe this situation other than disappointment. Yeah, it's not surprising, but I find it hard to believe that people here weren't disappointed when this news came out yesterday. Sox fans were very quick to have a field day with the ARod and even the Pettitte stories, but I've heard a lot of "I'm just tired of this whole steroid thing - we should just move on." Didn't hear as much of it when it was the Yankees in the crosshairs. Big Papi is dead. No matter how many home runs he hits for the Red Sox for the rest of his careers, it will simply be from David Ortiz.

The Sox also own Kotchman's rights through 2011, where LaRoche is an FA at the end of this season. Shrewd move.

Simply put, how do you think Theo did? I give him a solid A-, for the following reasons: 1. Kotchman from LaRoche was a lateral move but the defense improves significantly. What this tells me is the Sox are comfortable with CK in a backup role similar to Mientkiewicz in 2004. 2. The Sox landed Victor Martinez without giving up Buchholz, Kelly, or Bard. They keep their blue chip prospects and upgrade the offense. I'm comfortable with getting rid of the Greek to make room for this guy. What say you, Talksox?
