  1. Mike Lowell loves you. Yes, you Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff February 23, 2010 07:10 PM Mike Lowell was asked near the end of his press conference what it meant to him to have the support of so many fans: "I love the fans," he said, saying he has his wife check out what people say on web sites about him. "She says, 'You know how many people are really on your side in all of this?' I think they'll be more emotional if Adrian Beltre starts off slow and they'll be much less emotional if he starts off hot. That's kind of the way it goes. "Things can change really quickly. But I don't want to discount the fact that I feel like I've had tremendous support. and I think the fans appreciate the way I played the last four years in Boston. I think they appreciate someone who comes to play every day. I think I showed that I played hurt, maybe to the detriment of their eyes because that blur across the screen running the bases was probably not me. "But, yeah, that's a very flattering thing, I'll be honest with you. Very flattering when the fans feel like there's an injustice being put on you. That's a good feeling when you have the fans on your side."
  2. Drew discusses his shoulder surgery Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff February 24, 2010 08:50 AM J.D. Drew talked to the media this morning. He went into some detail on his left (non-throwing) shoulder and the surgery he had in the offseason. Drew had two cortisone shots during the season, one just before the playoffs when he took a few days off. The discomfort had gotten to the point where he was unable to hit as often as he wanted before games. "I figured after I got that last cortisone shot and we got some time off in the offseason it would just heal itself up. But around Thanksgiving I called (trainer Mike Reinold) and just told him, 'Hey, this is not getting any better. It actually feels like it's getting worse." Drew elected to have traditional surgery to remove the spurs instead of an arthroscopic procedure that would have explored the health of his rotator cuff as well. That allowed him to come back a little quicker and he was able to prepare for the season as planned. "There may have been some times I was affected playing with it, but not really that much," Drew said. "The second half of the year I felt like I was swinging the bat as good as any point in my career. "The bone spurs were just a nagging thing. Once the game started and the adrenalin started flowing, you really didn't think about it."
  3. Hope the Men's US team continues to do well. Great game Sunday, no doubt. I'm looking forward to the Women's Gold Medal game Thursday evening USA v. Canada. GO USA!
  4. Kelly impresses, as does Varitek Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff February 20, 2010 11:01 AM The goal today was to see Casey Kelly pitch and that was accomplished. It's easy to see why the Red Sox invested so much in him. Kelly seems to produce his velocity without effort and has good command. His athletic ability serves him well and he has the sort of frame that will easily handle more muscle and probably add some bada-bing to his fastball. Kelly threw in the bullpen to Victor Martinez as a bevy of team executives, including Theo Epstein, watched closely. While watching the pitchers throw in the bullpen, it was hard not to notice the chemistry between Martinez and Jason Varitek. As catching instructor Gary Tuck put his charges through their drills, Varitek and Martinez stayed at each other's side, giving words of encouragement. One of the drills involved catching little gumball-sized baseballs with your fingers to improve hand/eye coordination. As Tuck flips the balls one after another, it's virtually impossible to keep up and the balls skip away. Varitek stayed around to help Martinez gather them up and Martinez did the same for Varitek. Once the bullpens were other and the last drill finished, the catchers jogged off to another field for conditioning. Four of the young catchers took off, but Varitek stayed behind to wait for Martinez to load up his equipment bag and they headed off together. It's just a little courtesy and probably no big deal. But it speaks to Varitek being comfortable with Martinez and working to the common good of the team as opposed to being worried about losing his job as a starter. It's that sort of thing that fosters good team chemistry over a long haul.
