Wow...wanna put a side bet on this one? Good to see more people getting involved.

I think that everyone's a little sensitive right after people pass away. I caught loads of s*** when I mentioned anything about Kirby Puckett...Crunchy has a 1000% verifiable point here. Anytime anyone dies, that isn't a criminal (and I don't mean petty criminal) before they're 75 or 80 it's sad. It sure is. There are people that cared about that person, and probably people that depended on them. But the fact of the matter is, we mourn more for athletes than we do for everyday people...and that's just not right. I guess it's to be expected, they are in the public eye, but at the same rate, the public eye isn't really the eye that matters. It's the eyes of the children, the loved ones, the family, and the friends of that particular individual. My heart goes out to those people without fail. Much like it does to anyone who loses someone that they're close to.

The way I see it, the Sox have no chance at Matsuzaka for a number of reasons. I see the main players in this bid war coming down to the Sox, the M's, and the Yanks. Sure, the Sox have more money than Seattle, but Seattle's got Ichiro. If it were a two team race, I'd say it's up in the air where he would go...you can come to Boston for the money or go to Seattle with a fellow countrymen (I don't care how insignificant some people say that this is...if I were to go to Japan to play ball, and I had the option of being on a squad with at least SOMEONE that spoke my language and knew where I'd came from, it'd be absolutley invaluable.). However, New York has both of those positives on lockdown. The countrymen in Matsui and they have more money than God. I also think that the Lidle crash, as insignificant as baseball is at a time when someone has just lost their life, places a larger need for the Yankees to go get a starter to plug into their rotation. They may pay even more now for Matsuzaka then they would have previously. Also, I think they'll think more about resigning Moose too. Is anyone in favor of the Sox going after Mussina if the Yanks don't pick up his option? It's a pretty big option...$17 mil I think. I don't think he's worth that, but if the Yankees don't pick it up, I definitely wouldn't hate the Sox giving him a year or two. I think he's still got 2 left...he's not a flamethrower, but he constantly keeps you in ballgames which is what we need.

See, I kind of like being a Sox fan. Sure, I'd love more championships and what not, but I think, that being a Sox fan identifies more people than being a Yankee fan. Like, throughout my entire group of friends, I'm the Sox fan. Everyone knows me as such. Even all of my friends parents know me as a Sox fan. Whenever something happens with the Sox, they always talk to me about it. It's cool to be associated with something. Yankee fans are a dime a dozen around these parts (Syracuse, NY) so it's sweet being in the minority. Call me crazy.

I don't know, I'm just really tentative to throw big money at a Japanese import. I mean, sure...you've got guys like Ichiro and Matsui...even a lesser known guy like Takashi Saito from Texas...that have seemed wellllllll worth what was paid for them...but it seems to me like the buzz around Hideki Irabu a couple of years back was bigger than the buzz around Matsuzaka now. I'd hate to be on the buying end of another Irabu. That being said...this team needs guys that can throw. And throw well. For longer than 4 innings every 5th day. If the scouts see it as worthwile and a potential superstar, I see no other option but to go for it.

Hypothetically, you can only sign one pitcher...do you throw the money at Matsuzaka or Zito?

The only reason I'd want Loretta to walk is because he could get a multi-year deal elsewhere. So, it's for his interests, and his alone, that I wouldn't haaaaaaaate seeing him go. From a team and fan standpoint, however...I really want to see him back here. He's a nice guy, good to the fans, and I don't understand how people say he's not clutch...I know for a fact he had AT LEAST 2 GW walk-off hits this season...the HR and the off-the-monster double against Cleveland. JSinger...do you not agree that this year, numbers wise, you'd be compromising if you subtract Loretta and put in Pedroia? There's NO question about it...

Mark my words right now...Bonds numbers next year will not be worthy of $8 million, let alone the $10-15 million he's going to command. The man is old, broken down, a locker room cancer, and atrocious to the fans. He's destined to miss at least 40-50 games with various knee ailments and rest days. I want no part of him in Boston, and I don't even think Theo will give bringing him here a second thought. Theo's never been one to throw enormous money at huge names...he's more about putting together role players to bring about a winning team. Bringing Bonds into the Boston clubs house spells trouble trouble trouble.

I would rather have ClayBucholzIsDaFuture play for this team over Bonds. I understand who he is, I understand what he's capable of...but I hate him. Maybe I'm crazy, but I DO NOT even want to see a healthy Barry Bonds in Boston, let alone an off-steriods, old, broken down, and "running" on two bad knees injured Bonds. Keep him out of Beantown.

I agree with you that Loretta is past his prime...that's not my arguement. I see Loretta more so as the newly-single MILF than a 60 year old woman. Sure, the MILF was probably hotter a couple of years ago, before she banged out those kids, but she's still hardly something to turn your nose up at and very warranting of some loving. My point is this...cut and dry, black and white...you're going to get more production out of Loretta at 2nd this coming year than you would out of Pedroia. Pedroia's not going anywhere...I'm not saying we should trade him or anything like that. He's the second baseman of the future and I'm VERY excited about it. I just think that, when you have a solid veteran 2nd baseman like Loretta available, there's no need to rush the kid to the majors. Now...don't get me wrong...if Loretta goes down, or would require too much money, or anything of the sort...I fully advocate giving Pedroia his chance this year. I don't, however, think Loretta will command a whole lot of money this year, and the return on whatever you do pay him will be hugely in the Sox favor compared to the return they've gotten on the salaries that they've paid to a lot of other players. Basically, if it's meant to be, Pedroia will find his way into the majors this year. I just don't see a reason to push Loretta out of town when he's done nothing but perform in the one year he's been here. BTW...I'll give credit where it's due, very nice job on rebounding the underage girl analogy. Well done, sir.

Dude...no one really understands your love affair with Pedroia yet. The kid has showed amazing promise in the minors, but he didn't do anything in his opportunities in the bigs this year to tell me that he's ready to take the spot from a VERY solid veteran 2nd baseman who also happens to be one of the best #2 hitters in the game. There's nothing wrong with seeing a 15 or 16 year old girl and saying to yourself "Damn...she's going to be a knockout in 5 or 6 years."...there IS something wrong with dating them while they're 15 or 16. That's virtually what you're doing with Pedroia. It's simply not his time...YET.

There was a time when Thomas was argueably the most feared hitter in the game. Comparing him to Trot is like comparing apples to oranges. Thomas can still swing a huuuuge stick, but Trot has never had that kind of power. Power stays longer than other things, things more important to Trot's game.

My mistake...the way I understood it was that they signed Clemens for 1 year...which wouldn't make him a free agent until a couple of months into the season...a situation that I have never heard of before. You've gotta go after him, then. I wonder how much they'll look to sign him for? He was making like 20 this year, right?

If Clemens is in ANY way available, you've gotta get him. The Astros won't be looking for anything huge from him, maybe a couple of low to mid level guys...I'd certainly do it. Clemens has always been awesome with taking young guys under his wing and showing him the ropes, he'd be a great presence with Schill to have for one year.
