  1. Smoak smoked that, but a long out.
  2. Good start to the game for Lackey-- 4 batters, no out. Tito had better get some one up.
  3. That hit was so cheap that was Jeter-esque
  4. 4 solo Homers against CC-- Kotchman, Shoppach, Damon and Johnson.
  5. Comparatively speaking, not in the context of society as a whole.
  6. If a similar bet were posed today, I'd gladly give up any two guys from our current roster to guarantee a World Championship. After winning, management would find a way to cope with losing those guys and be just fine. Life would go on for the Red Sox, and there would be another Championship Banner hanging at Fenway for eternity.
  7. Again, the question was posed to us as fans, not as GMs. World Championships are very rare. In 45 years of being a fan, I have seen 2 of them . At the time the question was asked in this thread, I had seen 1. I would gladly have traded those two for a guaranteed championship. As of today, it wouldn't have been a bad bet. I hope that after this year the result of the bet changes, but that's not going to be easy. You are reading consequences and ripple effects into this that were not part of the premise of the bet.
  8. Is there any such thing as underrated? There should be an underpaid list.
  9. I think he was a Tiger. We had trouble with him when we faced him in relief. Mets wanted to get him to put him in the rotation with Dickey.
  10. Dunn is having one of the worst seasons in history, so it would be hard to underrate him at this point.
  11. But they haven't won another one yet. Hopefully, they win this year, then the gamble was worth it, but if they don't win another one for the Sox, it wasn't worth the gamble. I look at the results, not whether they gave us a chance.
  12. Bites at the apple don't count unless you get the apple.
  13. Investors don't take risks to get the same return as a guaranteed return. It's as simple as that. You take risks to make more than guaranteed returns.
  14. I'm a betting man. I figure it is a 50-50 call right now. Take whatever side of the bet you want, and I'll take the other side.
  15. And if those two guys win for the Sox before the end of the 2015 season, it was worth the risk. If not, the risk wasn't worth it.
  16. Thank you for making my point. Winning a Championship is very difficult. That's why you take the guarantee, because the next one may not come for . . . maybe 86 years.
  17. They spent $200 million in FA's in 2007 to win and so far this season they have obligated themselves to over $300 million for 2 guys.
  18. They have to win this year for those people who passed up the guaranteed World Championship in 2006. If they don't win this season and Papelbon walks after the season, keeping them did not turn out better than the guarantee.
