  1. Valentine really hasn't done anything. What can he do at this point-- completely manufacture a lie about some meeting that they didn't have? Carl created this particular problem all by himself, and now we are going to blame someone else, because Carl can't handle the heat?
  2. I agree with this, but with such thin benches in today's game due to the fact that teams often carry 11-12 pitchers, I think it is essential to have the farm system provide depth to the major league roster. As to your point about producing centerpieces for the future, that is obviously an important function, but we are 2-3 years away from seeing anything like that. The biggest deficiency across the board is pitching depth. There is none ready to step in if there is an injury and there doesn't seem to be a lot at the lower levels. I know you admired the young arms that the rays were able to bring out of their pen in 2011. Our system has nowhere near that wealth of live arms. When we bring up a guy, I bite my nails hoping that he doesn't take a wrecking ball to the game before he is able to get 3 outs.
  3. Of the 4 most talked about available starting pitching options, here is my order of preference: 1. Oswalt (1 yr contract) 2. Garza 3. Edwin Jackson 4. Kuroda They are all very close. Three and four could easily flip flop depending on contractual terms. I give Jackson the nod because he is 10 years younger than Kuroda, and he should be hitting his prime. What's your order of preference?
  4. He's disgusting, but less disgusting than what we ran out to the mound in the 4th and 5th rotation spots last year.
  5. I think he was the best managerial option for the Sox after Terry left. I think he is a good manager and an excellent tactician, but I am not a fan of his. I really don't know many people that like him. They may respect his ability, but his fan club probably consists of his mother. I don't see Bobby V being given the benefit of any pro- Bobby V bias.
  6. There really aren't many people that like Bobby V. He's not a likeable guy. He is a good baseball guy, but not a likeable person. I don't think there is a lot of pro-Bobby V bias going on.
  7. Yeah, this was a little mean. You know we are waiting on the edge of our seats for the next move. Crazy kid!
  8. It's a difference in our style. I post my thoughts and opinions first many times, mainly because it is the opinion that generates the discussion. I have always been willing to back it up or defend it if questioned or challenged. That's my posting style. I do my research first and then let the opinion fly and the debate commence. I do measure twice. I just don't always explain that i have. BTW My wife assumes that i don't do any research when i purchase a car, because once I have decided what I want after diligent research about the car and the pricing, I will go to the dealer and cut the deal usually within an hour. She is convinced that I am impulsive.
  9. It's not his style to tip toe around the truth. He's a direct guy. By the time, Bobby V made his statement to the press, Crawford had already committed his misdeed, so whether you agree or disagree with Bobby V's statement, it was not an excuse for Crawford not returning his call.
  10. Renaudo and Iglesias took steps backward in 2011, especially Iglesias. Tazawa had shown promise prior to his injury. Kalish is not a prospect. He no longer has rookie status. I consider him a major leaguer. Will he stick and how much will he produce are the only questions? Unless he is traded, he will have the RF job -- it's his to lose. Not having a minor league system that can bolster or reinforce the big club is a big weakeness. The strength of our system with the younger players is not so phenomenal that it overcomes that weakness, and where is the depth of pitching prospects-- there is none. The system is overall just so-so at best. I may not have put a full analysis in my post, but that doesn't mean that I haven't made a full analysis. Seeing these lists just confirms my opinion.
  11. I'm not sure what Valentine did that was wrong. He tried to reach out to the guy. Was he supposed to lie and say that he had a wonderful conversation with him? I'm not seeing anything wrong from Bobby V in this regard. I've seen Bobby V be an idiot and wear out his welcome. This is not what it looks like. CC is wrong here. There is no acceptable explanation.
  12. That was an interesting comment by Benny. He does seem to telegraph his punches a bit. If you read his comments on Papelbon, you had to know there was no chance he was coming back. During the Winter meetings, he basicall said that he wouldn't make any moves and he didn't. He said that his moves would come down the road and some would be under the radar. Melancon was definitely under the radar. Based on his statement about Sweeney and the omission of Kalish, I would have to think Kalish is going somewhere.
  13. It's no excuse for not picking up the phone to return a call to your manager. If his skin is that thin, his stay in Boston will be a train wreck.
  14. I was critical of the JH foot in mouth moment, but what has one thing got to do with the other?
  15. It is a very different list-- a very young inexperienced list. Except for Middlebrooks and Lavarnway, none of the top 10 have played or are expected to play above A ball in 2012. A farm system should provide a source of depth for the big club in the event of injuries and under-performance. Our system is very deficient in this regard. The young guys on this list will shift position on the list or drop off in the next season or two-- that's how imprecise it is to evaluate young talent. In the end, unless about 5 of those guys progress to ML ready prospects in a couple of seasons, I think we'd have to conclude that Theo left the system in a bad place, because we have zero MLB ready talent right now.
  16. Maybe the Cards. They need a closer and they have a lot of payroll available without Pujols.
  17. Texas or the Angels
  18. If he wants out, they should place him on irrevocable waivers like they did with Manny after the 2003 season. Any team could have had him, but they all passed. They told Manny that the only way he could leave was if he tore up his contract. He stayed and shut up until mid-2006. If Crawford wants out, he'd better come out of the starting gate on fire in 2012. If he reestablishes himself, they might be able to trade him or someone might pick him off the waiver wire.
  19. Let me just say that if Theo trades Garza to the Yanks instead of the Red. Sox, Benny Boy had better have him arrested for trespassing the next time Theo uses a Fenway office when he is in town.
