  1. I've watched a lot of Ross. My niece was a Marlins season ticket holder and a big fan of Ross as is my Sister in Law. The guy is hot and cold. He'll have his moments where he'll look like an All Star. If he plays 140 games for the Sox, he'll be average. If he platoons, he could have an above average season stat-wise.
  2. Lin didn't look so good in the OF today. He is just minor league filler.
  3. The site of surgery can experience swelling for an extended period of time. I have my fingers crossed that this is just part of the healing process.
  4. I like the Ross pickup, but I think his highest and best use is as a Right handed platoon player. He is not a very good every day player.
  5. Ross can have some incredible hot streaks where he is white hot. Unfortunately, those streaks don't last long, and when they are over he is not very good at all. In that regard, he reminds me of Brian Daubach. When he was hot, he looked like an All Star, but when he went cold, he looked like he had been struck blind.
  6. A knuckle curve? I wonder if he learned that pitch from Mussina when he was with the Yankees.
  7. Beckett must have dropped some weight. In the post game press conference, his face didn't look bloated like it was last year.
  8. They just played their first exhibition game today and the starters only played half the game, so their isn't a lot to say one way or the other. I did make a positive comment about Salty's footwork and release on steal attempts. There is nothing to gush about yet.
  9. The actual conversation probably went like this: Bobby V: I know what I am talking about. I have been playing, coaching and managing this game for over 40 years. Nishioka: Yeah, yeah right.. old man. Bobby V: Seriously kid, you are gonna get your leg broken if you don't clear out on the inside slide. I can spot these things. I have a trained eye. Nishioka: Show me something you old fossil if you want my respect. Bobby V.: Good luck kid. Break a leg.
  10. Salty in the first inning steal attempt looked to have quicker footwork than last season, but he double clutched and then bounced the throw. Hopefully, they can make some adjustments to his mechanics to help against the running game. Last year, there was no difference between lead off doubles or singles, because most of them ended up on second with no outs.
  11. If Bard and Doubront perform to SFF's projections, I predict that they will win the AL East in a cake walk.
  12. Neither Bard or Doubront has any major league track record as a starter. Bard has elite stuff, but the only record he has as a starter in the professional ranks is as a failure. We have no basis for predicting their 2012 performances as starters. The best we can do is hope for the best, but I agree with Emmz. My mind doesn't spin in the direction of 15 win seasons with sub 4 ERA. Hell, I'd be okay with 200 innings and 15 win seasons with sub 4 ERA's from out top 3 guys. I think they can do better, but not a whole lot better and they are All Stars. I spent too many years of my youth in the 60's, 70's and 80's having expectations like that for guys who I can't even remember today. I can't go down that road.
  13. I'll be doing back flips if we can get that from Felix the 5 hole.
  14. But the Sox give the Northeastern kids some very nice goody bags of stuff. I saw them carting the stuff in one year.
  15. Papelbon had 3 pitches too. He just rarely used all three. Bard does have 3 pitches and his secondary pitches are probably more refined and consistent than Pap's pitches. However, as a starter, he is going to be able to go to all 3 with consistency.
  16. Actually Fred was dead right. His point was that you need a third pitch to be an effective starter, but he cited Lincecum and Kershaw as exceptions. If fangraphs show that Lincecum and Kershaw have 3 effective pitches, all it proves is that they are not exceptions to the rule. So, he's still right that Bard needs a 3rd pitch.
