    With the payroll flexibility that they have, they should be able to field a contending team if they make the right moves. Here are our vacancies as we go into the offseason: First Base-- Maybe they go on the cheap with a Gomez/Loney platoon for 1 season Shortstop-- It doesn't look like Iglesias is ready to hold down the job LF 4th OFer 2 Starting Pitchers 1 Quality Reliable End of the Bullpen Arm I think they have the payroll flexibility to fill almost all of these needs through freaa agency or trades. I don't have much confidence that they will make these moves.

    In 6 years as Red Sox closer, Papelbon never gave up 5 earned runs in an outing-- not once. Bailey is off to a great start breaking new ground. I guess he feels that he belongs now that his ERA has been inflated to almost 7.

    Anyone that thinks our pen will be strong without adding to it has not taken a close look at the late inning and close game numbers. I am not sold on the injury prone Bailey being the next Papelbon. He s*** all over himself tonight in his only real pressure situation this season. Aceves may need a change of scenery, and he is not a reliable closer or 8th inning guy. He is a good flex/long reliever. We need to bring another strong arm in house, because we don't have one in the organization yet. Maybe Tazawa develops like a Robertson, but I wouldn't hand him the 8th inning job just yet. Let him go through the fire next season and win the spot.

    Bingo. It's a s***** job for stupid guys. It never paid much either until Steinbrenner changed that with Joe Torre. At least the pay is good and it beats pumping gas.

    Some of the greatest managers were hopeless drunks and buffoons. The job is not hard. Most of these guys make out a lineup card and set their pitching rotation and that's about it except for the handful of managers who over-manage and out-think themselves. They have never been a smart group of guys. My expectations of them is and always has been very low.

    Girardi is horrible. He gets bailed out of his stupid moves all the time, because he has a very talented roster.

    He may be worse than Greg Grebeck, the worst offensive player that I have seen in a Red Sox uniform.

    He's a slower version of Carlos Pena without the slick glove. His inconsistency and his k's would make us crazy. Also, the Mets are sure to want a lot for him. Carlos Pena will surely be available this year on the cheap. I'd rather have him for one year to platoon with Mauro Gomez.

    This is the first good year that he has had in a while, and $22 million is a big price tag. I think it is more likely that they choose not to execise the option. I don't think it is sound business to overpay a player in hopes of getting value in return for prospects that you have already traded. That's throwing good money away after bad money.

    He's an idiot. IDK how he got the genius reputation. The guy's moves are idiotic, but he has been fortunate to have teams with good pitching so they have been competitive. Walking Ciriaco the other night to pitch to Ells was typical of his stupid moves.

    Clubhouses have always been crude places. not for the feint of heart. I remember hearing Phil Rizzuto tell stoties about how Casey Stengel had referred to him as the "Little Dago" and DiMaggio as the "Big Dago." It was no big deal. Of course, they were smart enough not to say those things in interviews or for public consumption, and the press knew that it stayed in the clubhouse. Nothing would have happened in this case either. I am sure that is probably a common insult in the locker room. He had to be disciplined, because the idiot wrote it on his face.

    I don't know if those are the guys that I would try to get, but yes it would be guys like that. I'd shy away from Garza, because I think he is a TJ candidate in waiting. I would see Doubs and Morales battling with Lackey and De LaRosa for the 5th slot. That rotation would be strong and deep.
