  1. This would be a mistake. If they don't make some sort of demonstrable moves toward improvement, people will not be filling Fenway and they will not watch the games causing ad revenue to plummet. People are not going to invest time or money in a team that is a last place team when they break camp. It would damage the value of the franchise.
  2. Boston is probably a pretty hard sell after last season's debacle.
  3. I am really starting to think he is a procrastinator. Before the offseason started people thought that it would be hard for the Sox to land 2 Starting pitchers. The Jays just landed 2. We should keep a tally of how many starting pitchers change teams before Ben gets one of them.
  4. Hopefully we will not have to settle for an Aaron Cook and Padilla.
  5. The Blue Jays got a leg up on us. There is no denying that. They improved their team. All the conjecture about how Reyes' or Buehrle's contracts will look on the back end is just Sox fan whining. The Jays got better and we have 3 catchers and we're in the hunt for a new minor league batting coach and a first base coach.
  6. You could look at it that way, or you could look at Buerhle as a guy that has always been a soft thrower, but who has been a model of consistency and dependability for about 10 years. You could also look at Reyes as one of the top talents in the game who plays a premier position who has averaged 150 games played since he became a starting SS with the exception of his disastrous 2009 injury marred season.
  7. The Jays didn't part with can't miss blue chip guys. In a year or two when Reyes can still play and he'll have much less on his contract, he'll still net prospects like that in return. As for Buehrle, yes he will be older, but productive lefties can usually net something in the way of prospects. To call the Red Sox approach conservative is to assume they have done something. This is the second off season in a row where their biggest need is starting pitching and they still have not made a single rotation acquisition. The off season has just begun, but the fact is that Cherries has done nothing with regard to pitching since he took the helm.
  8. I'd be happy with a return to respectability. Remaining competitive and playing meaningful games through the end of August is not aiming too high.
  9. I am so glad that the Red Sox didn't sacrifice any of their elite pitching prospects. You don't want to sacrifice the future. LOL!
  10. In a year or two, if it doesn't work out for Toronto, Reyes and Buehrle will still have enough value to bring back prospects in a trade. I wouldn't lament the loss of the prospects for those guys.
  11. Add that to Brandon Morrow, Haap, Drabeck, Alvarez and dustin McGowan and their pitching is pretty deep. Compare that to our pitching that has 4 starters -- Doubront is #4 and Lackey is coming off TJ surgery.
  12. JH is a bust as a business man. He can't maintain success in any field for an extended period. I'd be surprised if he isn't pushing for a sale looking to make a financial killing.
  13. And we still wait for the smart acquisitions. He is entering into his second off season, and we wait.
  14. And so the excuses for Cherington begin.
  15. The hill just got higher.
  16. Which is less than half of what the Red Sox shed and it would have gone a long way toward fixing what was broke about the team.
  17. It would have made for a very Happy Thanksgiving. Instead, we got a backup catcher.
  18. Escobar is not in Reyes league. Buehrle may be the most consistent starter in the last 6-7 years. He puts up 30 starts 200 innings 10+ wins and a sub 4 ERA every single season.
  19. I don't know what the patient approach means. Does that mean that we just build through the draft? The Red Sox have to get back to competitiveness and respectability. We don't have to be the odds on favorites in Vegas, but they need to get back to respectability fast. The Jays just put some huge room between us. Cherington is just too slow on the trigger. I can't imagine how he didn't get in on some of those players.
  20. That should solidify last place for us. Cherington takes too long to act. Last off season he sat on his hands as every other team made significant moves. He's starting this off season the same way. His first move was a backup catcher. That was not exactly at the top of my list.
  21. I would let Lackey and Doubront battle for the 5th spot. The other guy would be a long reliever/depth starter.
  22. The Nationals added 2 pitchers to their starting staff in the last off season. I see no reason why the Sox can't do the same through trade and/or free agency. I do not think that the current staff with one addition will be enough to compete.
  23. I firmly believe that 1 pitcher will not fix our situation, no matter what Farrell can do.
  24. Here is my opinion on what the Sox need to have a competitive team next season in order. Of importance: 2 Starting Pitchers (1 will no be enough) 1 OFer (2 if Ross signs elsewhere) 1 power bullpen arm capable of closing when Bailey gets injured. 1 First baseman (maybe a lefty to platoon with Gomez) The starting pitching is the most criitical. If they only get 1 pitcher, it will be a 4th place team at best, unless that pitcher is King Felix.
  25. Our staff with the addition of Niese would leave us in 4th place or the basement.
